Finland Frets as Russia Launches
Military Drills on Its Doorstep

NBC News, by Alexander Smith*

Original Article

Russian military drills near neighboring Finland have provoked concern that northern Europe may be the next focus of Moscow´s seemingly renewed appetite for redrawing its borders. Troops and jet fighters from all four military regions of Russia were deployed Sunday about 150 miles east of the Finnish border, according to the English-language newspaper Finnbay. The Russian defense ministry said in a statement that the exercises were pre-planned and that more than 50 fighter pilots took part. Finland was part of the Russian empire for 108 years, from 1809 until Russia’s withdrawal from World War I in 1917. The Karelia region,

Exactly, #1. Then I expect a statement from The Shirtless One to the effect of: "I Have No More Territorial Demands In Europe/Scandanavia. Oh, wait..."

Don´t worry, Barky and Jacques Kerry will send Pooty-Poot a "Strongly Worded Letter".

Drills 150 miles from the Finnish border? How provocative can you get?

NBC still seems sore at Putin for his "anti-gay laws" - as is most of the left-wing press these days. No part of today´s Finland was disgorged after the breakup of the Soviet Union - so there is nothing to "take back" with a referendum. In fact, Russia still holds those lands one-time claimed by Finland and retained by Russia during WWII-era fighting along the common border. Thus it is more likely that Finland will start a war to regain those lands - which is to say zero chance.

Nor are there any significant numbers of Russian in Finland - other than recent immigrants and tourists.

All this crazy press reminds me of the "Yellow Journalism" of the Hearst days - "Remember the Maine" when a ship boiler explosion was use by newspapers to incite a war with Spain - getting us stuck with the Spanish Empire in the end. You can thank the Hearsts newspapers for our current linkage to Puerto Rico. (We were at least smart enough to dump the Philippines after WWII).

It seems far-fetched, but what if Russia really did invade Finland? What would anyone do? Back in 1940, I don´t think the ´experts´ expected Hitler to topple France and the Low Countries in one big knock-out punch, but it happened.

#6, When the Philippines requested independence let´s just say we were very happy to grant it and leave it at that.

Much like when in 1991-2 the local government refused to extend the leases of our huge Air Force and Navy bases there (thus "dumping" us) we were not unhappy to leave. Our refusal to pay a large rent increase and Maxwell AFB being covered in volcanic ash makes it, like independence, more of a case of "he said/she said".

#12, I think you meant to say Clark Air Base. And if I remember, the Philippines government demanded that we restore the base to its pre-volcanic condition. We laughed at that one.

Today, Clark [aka Diosdado] is alive and well as an international joint use civil-military field. Some US jets participate in Balikatan exercises there.

The last time the Russians fought a war with Finland it did not work out so well for the Russians.

Finland is a sovereign country that is no threat to Russia, militarily or otherwise. If Russia ever invaded Finland most of the world would seriously isolate Russia and you can bet that it would cause NATO to build up their conventional forces in Europe and that would not do the Russians any good.

Maybe. On the other hand, Mexico and Canada fret about us, all the time, and that subjective fretting doesn´t really mean we are up to anything. The Mexicans think we start earthquakes on purpose. It´s just how it feels being next to something really big. As for Crimea, if the Crimean voters are who picked Yanukovich, then conceding they have rotten taste, nevertheless the social compact between them and the rest of the Ukraine was broken when the rest of the Ukraine just threw out their candidate. I don´t see why they had to stay. And I repeat that I have been watching carefully for years and never ever yet saw Putin lie. He is bossy, he is anti-American, he has strange friends, but I have never seen him lie. This is a tasty snack tossed to the nationalists to change the subject. Zippy might rather battle Russia than lose the Senate.

The reluctance of Hamas’s “military wing”—a misnomer for the more extreme elements of its extremist leadership—to accept the cease-fire designed by Egypt is, well, logical. Let’s admit it. They do not wish to accept defeat, and the Egyptian terms are a defeat for Hamas. By attacking Israel, what has Hamas wrought? Considerable damage was done to Gaza by Israeli air power, and Gazans will be picking up the pieces for months if not longer. But Hamas proved unable to kill one single Israeli with its hundreds of rockets, and all its special tricks—tunnels, longer-range rockets, a drone—also failed. Nor could

House Republicans are moving quickly to address the growing humanitarian crisis on the southern border, possibly holding votes as soon as next week. As Congress moves closer to the monthlong August recess, the speedy action sends a clear message to Senate Democrats: Take it or leave it. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), incoming Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and a group of top lawmakers working on the border crisis are set to file a bill that very closely mirrors the legislation crafted by Texas lawmakers Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican, and Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar.

Two of the larger social trends of our time — the growth of payday gambling and the legalization of marijuana — have two things in common: They are justified as the expansion of personal liberty, and they serve the interests of an expanding government. The ideological alliance behind these changes is among the strangest in U.S. politics. Libertarians seek to lift governmental restraints on consensual acts. State governments seek sources of revenue without the political inconvenience of requesting broad tax increases. Both find common ground in encouraging and exploiting the weaknesses and addictions of citizens. (And business interests and their lobbyists,

That same consensus also holds that if the GOP does indeed take control, the next two years will be marked by confrontation with the White House and even less actual legislative action than the present Congress has accomplished. To be fair, there is some compelling logic behind these conclusions. President Obama has clearly opted out of the role of governing through legislation.
