TOPEKA, Kan. -- Michelle Obama is rearranging plans for a speech before graduating high school seniors in Kansas in the face of protests that her appearance at a combined graduation ceremony for five schools would limit seating for families and friends. She had accepted the Topeka public school district´s invitation to speak May 17 at the combined ceremony to mark that day´s 60th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, outlawing school segregation. The case originated in Topeka. But a furor over what the district considered an honor erupted after plans for Mrs. Obama´s address were

Oregon is set to become the first state to drop its ObamaCare exchange and transition into the system managed by the federal government. The decision follows months of severe technical issues that have made Oregon´s marketplace one of the worst in the country. About $130 million has been spent on Cover Oregon, but it is the only ObamaCare enrollment system that won´t let registrants buy coverage and qualify for tax credits in one sitting. It had not enrolled a single person online as of early March, and remains mired in glitches almost seven months after a rocky launch. Alex Pettit,

Controversial Pardon Attorney Ronald Rodgers is stepping down from his post and will be replaced by a former journalist and nonprofit executive as part of a sweeping overhaul of the federal clemency process. Deborah Leff, whose previous post at the Justice Department involved increasing access to lawyers for poor defendants, will take over from Rodgers to shepherd through the thousands of new clemency petitions from nonviolent federal inmates hoping to receive a commutation under the new program. The change in leadership represents a new era for the pardon process, as the president prepares to shift from granting the fewest

The last few years have brought an astonishing moral and political transformation in the American debate over same-sex marriage and gay equality. This has been a triumph not only for LGBT Americans but for the American idea. But the breakthrough has brought with it rapidly rising expectations among some supporters of gay marriage that the debate should now be over. As one advocate recently put it, “It would be enough for me if those people who are so ignorant or intransigent as to still be anti-gay in 2014 would simply shut up.” The signatories of this statement are grateful to

The IRS is demonstrating vigor in enforcing the rules for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations against influencing elections with its recent revocation of the tax-exempt status of the conservative Patrick Henry Center for Individual Liberty for anti-Hillary Clinton and John Kerry articles posted to the group’s Web site. Perhaps the non-partisan Internal Revenue Service will balance the scales of justice by revoking the tax-exempt status of the Democratic Party front group Media Matters for America.

The Obama administration on Wednesday criticized Iran’s election to the U.N.’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) – but neither the U.S. nor any other delegation objected when given the opportunity to do so, thus allowing Iran to get the seat “by acclamation.” Iran will now serve on the CSW, a body dealing with gender equality and the advancement of women, for another four-year term, having already been a member since 2011. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power took to Twitter to express her views: “Yet again Iran unopposed & was ‘elected’ to Commission on Status of Women.

WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama’s annual question-and-answer session with the children of Executive Office employees took a serious turn Thursday when a 10-year-old girl in the front row told the first lady that her dad had been out of work for three years. Then the girl popped up to hand the first lady his resume. The first lady seemed a little taken aback but then explained to the other children, who might not have heard the girl’s comment, that the matter was “a little private, but she’s doing something for her dad.” Mrs. Obama promised to deal with the matter later. First lady Michelle Obama took her campaign to help veterans find jobs to Fort Campbell, Ky.., Wednesday where she said that most Americans don´t know much about the military. Following comments from Jill Biden, the vice president´s wife and Obama´s teammate in helping veterans, she noted that unlike Biden, she had little familiarity with the military prior to campaigning for the White House in 2008. “Unlike Jill, I wasn´t a military mom. I wasn´t a Blue Star family member. I didn´t know much about the military, and I was probably more like the average American,” said Obama.

But his comments on Wednesday appeared to be more direct. Asked what his "immediate plans" were, he said, according to an attendee: "I´m thinking about running for president." Anyone expecting rancher Cliven Bundy to apologize at a news briefing Thursday for widely condemned remarks — that black people were “happier” during the slavery era than now — would be disappointed. Wearing his signature cowboy hat, Bundy, who led an armed confrontation with federal rangers over a land dispute and was then hailed as a patriot by Fox News’ Sean Hannity and other conservatives, repeated in Bunkerville, Nevada, what he had said earlier — he was “just wondering” if blacks were better off under slavery. Sotomayor’s 58-page dissent, joined by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, has one theme: Race matters. At least 40 U.S. veterans died waiting for appointments at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care system, many of whom were placed on a secret waiting list. The secret list was part of an elaborate scheme designed by Veterans Affairs managers in Phoenix who were trying to hide that 1,400 to 1,600 sick veterans were forced to wait months to see a doctor, according to a recently retired top VA doctor and several high-level sources. For six months, CNN has been reporting on extended delays in health care appointments suffered by veterans across the country and who died while waiting for appointments and care.

In advance of President Obama’s four-nation Asian tour this week, the Washington Post published an article saying this: President Obama’s bid to focus U.S. attention on Asia has failed to meet the lofty expectations he set three years ago in a grand pronouncement that the new emphasis would become a pillar of his foreign policy.
