U.S. to require rear cameras

Washington — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Monday finalized long-delayed rules that will require automakers to install back-up cameras in all vehicles by May 2018. The new rules set rear visibility standards that automakers will initially be able to meet only by installing cameras. At the same time, major automakers said Monday they are petitioning the Obama administration to let them end the use of side view mirrors if they install cameras that could perform the same task — a move that could improve fuel efficiency. Side mirrors do a far better job in depth-perception and position except for the exact center of the rear bumper and how close you are to a low narrow object. Government has no business or authority mandating this or anything else. Time to shut them down.

OK, if Honda and Subaru are already making rear view cameras standard on all vehicles, why do we need a government mandate requiring them on all vehicles? Doesn´t it seem likely that all manufacturers will include them on all vehicles soon? And if they don´t, doesn´t it seem likely that there is a good reason why they don´t?

How many cars will be broadsided backing out of their driveway because they are looking at the rear camera instead of turning their heads to look for oncoming traffic? How many people were run over or killed last year by cars backing up? I suspect not many.

Another useless govn edict that will raise the price of an auto unnecessarily.

So, if these rear cameras eliminated EVERY backup death, they would cost us between $15 million and $26 million per death prevented. Do they really think that after every car has a backup camera there will be no more backup deaths?

I´ve had rear cameras in my last three vehicles. They´re great, along with the object sensors. But, I guarantee they do not replace side mirrors. The rear cameras can only show things the width of the rear bumper. They will not show a car moving up alongside your car in a blind spot.

Here´s hoping the cameras are as reliable as the simple mirror.

On my car they don´t let the camera picture be visible while I am in drive. I suppose it is a safety thing, but it is stupid. Now lets outlaw side view mirrors so we can´t see behind us at all while moving. I´d like to think that they would enable rear view cameras while the car was in drive, but that is a bit of a stretch considering these are the same people who gave us toilets that don´t work and expensive "green" light bulbs filled with mercury that don´t give off much light. FWIW I like my rear view camera and doubt I will ever buy a vehicle without one again. It´s especially nice on trucks.

Leave it to this administration to make the connection between rear cameras and fuel efficiency. No need for the Keystone Pipeline after all! And will a functional rear camera become part of annual safety inspections? Will we be required to shell out a grand or more to repair/replace a faulty system?

Backup cameras are great, but we don´t need NHTSA to mandate them. In fact we don´t need NHTSA.

But eliminating side view mirrors is beyond stupid. Like most drivers, I always check my side view mirrors when changing lanes or entering a highway. Unless the camera is on all the time and gives a complete view from 3 to 9 o´clock positions, this is stupid.

Have two vehichles- one with back-up beeper sensors and one with the back-up camera- can´t stand the camera. Half the time you can´t see well with it (due to dirt on the lense or glare on the screen). Also, while watching behind you can´t see off to the sides where more danger lurks. With the beeper you can still use your sight to watch out and get warning of objects behind. As for doing away with side mirrors that would be beyond stupid and dangerous. However, let the consumers decide- not the government as they always forget the law of unintended consequeces.

Our new 2014 Honda has a rear camera and a side right lane camera. Love both. No need for a right side view mirror or turning your head to look at the right side. I assume there is no left side camera as it is easy for the driver to look at his left side mirror turn his head slightly. With both left and right side cameras there would be no need for either side mirror. Obviously they are not talking about doing away with the side mirrors until there were side cameras.

Fort Sill, Okla. - A Republican congresswoman from Tennessee said the U.S. should cut aid to countries that are home to thousands of children who have crossed the border illegally to pay for the cost of caring for them. Rep. Marsha Blackburn made the comments Saturday after touring a temporary shelter at the Fort Sill Army Post near Lawton where more than 1,100 of the children are housed. Republican Rep. Jim Bridenstine of Oklahoma also toured the facility. Blackburn said Central American countries that the child immigrants are fleeing should be forced to bear the cost of paying for them

The report found that the average family fridge had grown in volume by two fifths since 1985, amid a fashion for large American-style appliances, while the average television had grown by more than seven inches since 2004.
