A cup of Earl Grey ´as good as statins´
at fighting heart disease, study finds

Telegraph [UK], by Alice Philipson

Drinking Earl Grey tea could help guard against heart disease, it has emerged, after a study found that bergamot extract--a key ingredient in the hot drink--is just as effective as statins at controlling cholesterol. Scientists believe bergamot, a fragrant Mediterranean citrus fruit which gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavour, can significantly lower cholesterol. They say it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can attack proteins in the body known to cause heart disease. The study found bergamot could even be as effective as statins, used to control cholesterol but which can have side effects in

If true, this finding could turn me into a tea-drinker after all these years!

Note that this bergamot is a citrus fruit and should not be confused with the herbs known as bergamot or wild bergamot (monarda sp.. a/k/a beebalm). Those plants are in the mint family and have their own very useful medicinal properties.

I drink Twining´s Lady Grey (international blend) but it is a light tea compared to the regular Earl Grey, with added oranges and lemons. I guess I will have to drink twice as much then. Not a problem as it is delicious.

Did the government fund the study?
Tea is a heck of a lot cheaper than statins.
Give it 5 years of people not taking statins but drinking tea instead and then we´ll talk.
Beware of studies, always question before acting.

and much much safer...
than the overpriced, overrated, conflict of interest, dangerous...
pharmaceuticals so often preferred by our not so smart M.D.´s.

It´s great news to know...
I´ll probably do the pill form...

If you want a treat, and even more bergamot look into a Middle Eastern market or a Mediteranian market for Bergamot preserves.
Use it as you would marmalade.
I also add its liquid to dijon mustard instead of honey as a spread for sandwiches.
The peel can be added to rice dishes and stuffings.
Yum!

If that tiny bit of bergamot works, then a glass of orange juice should be 10 better. Look up limonene, a citrus chemical, that might even clear cholestorol deposits. Buy that bag of Cuties next trip to the market!

And citrus won´t destroy your mitochondria and cause muscle death like the statins do.

Like all the studies we seen, there are always conflicting opinions:
Eggs are now good for you - used to be bad because of cholesterol
BBQ is now good - used to be bad because of carcinogens from the burnt meat
eating ice cream is bad - drownings are directly related to ice cream consumption
and on and on and on ...

So some people did their own two minute study and came up with their own conclusions

Argo tea shops in Chicago (not sure where else) make a blend called Earl Grey Creme. I´d venture a guess it has some vanilla flavor and is really delicious. It also contains tiny blue threads that I was told are cornflower, probably to mark it.
