Egypt´s electoral commission said Sunday the presidential election will take place on May 26 and 27, 10 months after the army overthrew Islamist leader Mohammed Morsi. The man who toppled him, now retired army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, is expected to win the vote easily as he rides a wave of popularity for removing the divisive president in July. Good. That El Sisi is a tough military man is probably necessary if Egypt is not to fall under the control of the Muslim Brotherhood as demonstrated the last time around. We make the mistake in believing that democratic elections will always work the will of the people. Clearly it doesn´t work when there is a well organized and large class of zealous thugs willing to use any means to secure power. Such elections often result in one vote and permanent communism or one vote and permanent Islamism. It doesn´t even always work in America as we´re finding out.

CAIRO - Three Hamas militants who infiltrated into Sinai from Gaza were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to assassinate former Egyptian defense minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is running for president, according to Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai. The three carried a coded letter with instructions to execute the assassination, passed by a senior Muslim Brotherhood official who escaped to Gaza. (Snip) The officials warned of a troubling development taking place among the al-Qaeda-linked organizations already inside Egypt. They said there is information the militant groups are forming a de facto chain of command, with alarming coordination between

Egyptian army chief Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has recently intensified contact with the Russian Defense Ministry in order to expedite the completion of an arms deal. According to senior Egyptian sources that the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai quoted in a report on Wednesday, the deal with Russia includes advanced aircraft, monitoring equipment and other sophisticated weapons that would be used to fight terrorism emanating from Sinai. (Snip) The delay continues an ongoing US partial aid and weapons freeze that has largely been seen as punishment for Sisi’s military coup and crackdown on former president Mohamed Morsi and his

An Egyptian court on Sunday set Sunday for the resumption of the trial of ousted president Mohamed Morsi and 14 co-defendants for allegedly inciting the murder of demonstrators outside Cairo´s Ittihadiya presidential palace in late 2012, a judicial source said Tuesday. According to the source, the decision came one day after the same court turned down a request for the recusal of the presiding judges in the case. President Obama is taking a swipe at the Founding Fathers, blaming his inability to move his agenda on the “disadvantage” of having each state represented equally in the Senate. At a Democratic fundraiser in Chicago Thursday night, Mr. Obama told a small group of wealthy supporters that there are several hurdles to keeping Democrats in control of the Senate and recapturing the House. One of those problems, he said, is the apportionment of two Senate seats to each state regardless of population. “Obviously, the nature of the Senate means that California has the same number of Senate seats as Wyoming.

Fox News anchor Gregg Jarrett was fueled by a potent cocktail of prescription drugs and vodka when he was arrested at a Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport bar on Wednesday. Admitting to police that he had started drinking at 9am that morning, the troubled 59-year-old journalist was taken into custody at 12.39pm at the Northern Lights Grill in the airport´s main terminal. Once in jail, Jarrett, who was carrying papers indicating that he had just been released from rehab, launched into a furious and confrontational tirade at police, repeatedly screaming, ´f*** you´, before officers physically subdued him. He remained in Hennepin County Jail until around

Phil Robertson included remarks in a sermon in his church West Monroe, Louisiana that harken back to the "Duck Dynasty" star´s past anti-gay remarks. Robertson included homosexuals with other groups, including thieves, drunks and adulterers, as hell-bound sinners in a sermon he gave on Easter that was recorded and put up on the church´s website. “Neither the sexually immoral, nor the idolators, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexual offenders, nor thieves, nor greedy, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God,” Robertson said, paraphrasing a verse from Corinthians in the

Why do some political scandals stick while others fade? The level of media obsession seems to rise and fall as mysteriously as the stock market. On Benghazi, sell. Hold on the IRS audits. On the Department of Veterans Affairs scandal, buy, buy, buy. In the broader scandal market, fraud or criminality helps. Political intrigue is a plus. Sexual content increases attention but may eventually seem pathetically human and excusable. Conservatives are convinced that the liberal media are harder on Republicans. There is a natural human tendency to attribute good motives to people with whom you agree — and corrupt motives

A federal just has put U.S. Rep. John Conyers, the second most senior Democrat in the House of Representatives, back on a Michigan congressional primary ballot, after he was struck off because most of the petition signatures he presented were ruled invalid. Conyers had lost an initial appeal Friday morning when Michigan election officials found problems with more than half of the Democrat´s nominating petitions. [Snip] But just hours later, Detroit federal Judge Matthew Leitman issued an injunction ordering election officials to put Conyers´ name on the ballot while larger constitutional issues are sorted out. Leitman was appointed in July 2013

U.S. Rep. John Conyers’ on-again, off-again roller coaster ride for the Aug. 5 ballot took a new twist Friday when U.S. District Judge Matthew Leitman put the 85-year-old congressman back on the ballot. Leitman’s decision, released late Friday, contradicts the Secretary of State’s review of Conyers’ petitions, which found earlier in the day that Conyers had less than half the required signatures of valid registered voters on the petitions he turned in to qualify for the Aug. 5 primary ballot. But Leitman said the requirement that petition ciruclators be registered voters — the issue that got Conyers booted off the ballot in

If you are part of the large contingent of the American population that opposes Obamacare, one Democratic senator says it’s probably because you’re a racist. “I think it is very important to take a long view at what’s going on here,” retiring West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller, the chair of the of the Senate Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee, said at a Wednesday committee hearing on Obamacare. “I’ll be able to dig up some emails that make part of the Affordable Care Act that doesn’t look good — especially from people who made up their mind that they don’t want it

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell vowed Thursday that if given the opportunity to lead the Senate he would watch over the upper chamber in a much different fashion that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Speaking at the American Enterprise Institute, Mr. McConnell said Mr. Reid, Nevada Democrat, has done “tremendous damage” to the comity of the Senate that is essential to the chamber’s operations. “He has turned the Senate into a graveyard of good ideas,” the Kentucky Republican, accusing Mr. Reid of blocking amendments from both parties and circumventing the normal committee process. “He has muzzled the people’s representatives and, through them,

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., repeatedly put the blame for the Veterans Affairs scandal on former President George W. Bush, while arguing that her party has worked hard for veterans in recent years. Pelosi took a shot at Bush while saying that the scandal is a high priority for Obama. "He sees the ramifications of some seeds that were sown a long time ago, when you have two wars over a long period of time and many, many more, millions more veterans," she told reporters during her Thursday press briefing. "And so, I know that he is upset about it."

An elderly Pakistani immigrant beat his wife to death with a stick after the doomed woman made the mistake of cooking him lentils for dinner instead of the hearty meal of goat meat that he craved, according to court papers. Noor Hussein, 75, was so outraged over the prospect of eating the vegetarian fare that he pummeled his wife, Nazar Hussein, 66, inside their Brooklyn apartment until she was a “bloody mess,” prosecutors said in opening statements of his murder trial Wednesday. “Defendant asked [his wife] to cook goat and [his wife] said she made something else,” court papers said.

What´s more, reports blogger Sooper Mexican, Aiken once all but urged fans to call Coulter a c**t. War on women, anyone?

If Mark Cuban was trying to defend Donald Sterling yesterday, he failed. Suggesting that we shouldn’t throw stones at the LA Clippers owner for his racist comments, Cuban said, “I know I’m prejudiced. I know I’m bigoted in a lot of different ways. If I see a black kid in a hoodie on my side of the street, I’ll move to the other side of the street.” Sorry, Mark Cuban, but you are not — at least to judge by that sentiment — a bigot. In fact, you’re in good company. Jesse Jackson once famously acknowledged, “There is nothing more painful
