Iran has named a member of the militant group that held 52 Americans hostage in Tehran for 444 days to be its next ambassador to the United Nations. The Iranian government has applied for a U.S. visa for Hamid Aboutalebi, Iran’s former ambassador to Belgium and Italy, who was a member of the Muslim Students Following the Imam’s Line, a group of radical students that seized the U.S. embassy on Nov. 4, 1979. Imam was an honorific used for Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic Revolution. Relations between the Islamic Republic and the U.S. and its allies are beginning to

Well, look at it from their point of view - America named a mentored-by-communists, friend of terrorist Bill Ayers, follower of hater Rev. Wright, "spread the wealth" Marxist as its president, twice. Which is worse - that, or promoting a hostage taker?

The number of Americans on disability now exceeds the number of people in New York City. More than 5.4 million workers and their dependents have signed up to collect federal disability checks since President Obama took office. Disability beneficiarias soared past 11 million for the first time in US history. CNS News reported: The total number of disability beneficiaries in the United States topped 11 million for the first time last month, increasing from 10,996,447 in April to a record 11,004,507 in May, according to new data released by the Social Security Administration.

Boston philanthropist and power broker Jack Connors recalls being a bit puzzled by the call he got from his state’s senior senator in May 2008. He did not consider himself part of Edward M. Kennedy’s inner circle, so when Kennedy started enthusing about his plans for a grand tribute to the U.S. Senate to be built next to his brother’s presidential library, Connors thought: “I wonder why he’s telling me all of this?” It turned out Kennedy wanted Connors to head up a massive fundraising operation to bring the project into existence. “Senator, I have absolutely no idea how to raise $90 million

SALT LAKE CITY - Authorities are bracing for nudity, drugs and general free-spiritedness during a counterculture gathering that began near Salt Lake City this week, compelling a pair of nearby Mormon church-owned girls´ summer camps to move elsewhere. The first attendees are setting up camp at the annual Rainbow Family gathering, where attendance is expected to total about 10,000. They have begun building kitchens and setting up tents in advance of their July 4 celebration. Most visitors have come without incident through the closest town of Heber City, said Wasatch County Sheriff´s Deputy Jared Rigby. But even just a few menaces have

An 89-year-old Pennsylvania man is wanted by Germany for charges of helping to slay 216,000 Jews during World War II. Johann Breyer, who immigrated to the U.S. in 1952, was arrested Tuesday at his home. He is believed to have joined the Waffen SS at age 17 and assisted in the killing of Jews at the Auschwitz and Buchenwald Nazi concentration camps, Reuters reported Friday. Germany has issued a warrant for his arrest, U.S. Magistrate Judge Timothy Rice said at Breyer’s court appearance in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia, Business Insider reported Friday. Mr. Breyer’s lawyers assert that the elderly suspect should

The unfolding sectarian violence in Iraq is just the latest crisis where the Obama administration seemingly has been caught off guard. From the Veterans Affairs scandal to Russia´s swift annexation of Crimea, news of the world somehow keeps taking the commander-in-chief and his team by surprise. The following is a refresher of major domestic and foreign policy developments that, apparently, were news to the White House. 1. Islamist militants gaining in Iraq

Former President George W. Bush left the White House more than five years ago and has since stayed out of most Washington debates. But it would be hard to tell that if you have been listening to Hillary Clinton over the past month. From defending her record at the State Department to defining her economic vision, Clinton has used Bush as her primary rhetorical device to both explain her vision for the future and defend her past. "The biggest accomplishment in the four years as secretary of state was helping to restore American leadership and we did that in a number of

For Biden, Iraq Crisis

WASHINGTON -- As Iraq edges toward chaos, Joe Biden is having a quiet I-told-you-so moment. In 2006, Biden was a senator from Delaware gearing up for a presidential campaign when he proposed that Iraq be divided into three semi-independent regions for Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds. Follow his plan, he said, and U.S. troops could be out by early 2008. Ignore it, he warned, and Iraq would devolve into sectarian conflict that could destabilize the whole region. The Bush administration chose to ignore Biden. Now, eight years later, the vice president´s doom-and-gloom prediction seems more than a little prescient. Old sectarian tensions have erupted

President Obama told his Mexican counterpart in a phone call Thursday that immigrants crossing into the U.S. illegally won’t qualify for legalized status or deferred deportation, including children. The White House said Mr. Obama and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto discussed “a regional strategy” to address the surge of unaccompanied children coming from Central America, through Mexico, to the U.S. With thousands of children trying to enter the U.S. illegally in recent months, Vice President Joseph R. Biden will visit Guatemala on Friday. Mr. Biden will warn officials and parents that illegal immigration is dangerous and that youth won’t be allowed to stay

Call it the president’s Kumbaya moment. It came Thursday, when President Obama announced this: “Above all, Iraqi leaders must rise above their differences and come together around a political plan for Iraq’s future.” Ironically, it’s the same mistake George W. Bush made early on in Iraq: the idea that a political process is the path to security. We learned the hard way — and it took a surge to do it — that it’s the other way around: Security makes politics possible. Right now, an al Qaeda offshoot called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria is converging on Baghdad from the north,

Washington -- How big of a threat is ISIS really? The White House wants to find out and is deploying as many as 300 military advisers to Iraq to assess the might of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. The jihad group´s rash battlefield successes make them look extremely fierce. They have surged over from northern Syria to blitz major cities in Iraq´s Sunni region, taking Tal Afar and Mosul then moving quickly south. During a week in which Iraq is quickly descending into another war, most of Secretary of State John Kerry’s work highlighted in the newsletter has nothing to do with that country — or any of the other diplomatic hot spots around the world. The one-page “State Department On The Hill” features a photo of Kerry at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence next to a stock image of colorful fish swimming in bright blue water, meant to highlight Kerry’s two-day “Our Oceans” summit.

TERESOPOLIS, Brazil -- Go ahead, FIFA, stop the music if you want. Fans will keep singing anyway. FIFA limits anthems to 90 seconds so they can get the World Cup games going quickly. But many national songs last much longer, and the fans - particularly South Americans proud to have the cup in their territory - are loudly taking over with a cappella renditions of the anthems that are bringing tears to the eyes of players. Unintentionally, FIFA has created some of the most emotional and patriotic moments of the World Cup. "When we hear the anthem being sung like that, we get
