Kansas Republican lawmakers have advanced a bill aimed at separating Kansas from the federal Affordable Care Act. And one to indefinitely stop Kansas from expanding Medicaid under the act. And one to require background checks for counselors who help consumers navigate the online insurance marketplace. They have held hearings about lawsuits against the health care act and its impact on businesses. And they use “Obamacare” as shorthand to explain their opposition to unrelated issues such as mortgage registration fees or Common Core education standards. Republicans say their intent is to protect Kansans from a flawed law. But Democrats say the GOP is focusing on a

Black students at schools in Wichita and surrounding districts are disciplined at higher rates than their white peers, a trend that mirrors racial disparities throughout the country, according to the most comprehensive survey of school civil rights data in nearly 15 years. The findings, part of an expansive survey of America’s public schools by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, shows that black students are more likely than whites to be suspended or expelled at middle and high schools in Wichita and most area districts. Education officials say it’s difficult to pinpoint reasons for the disparities. But

TOPEKA — A bill that nullifies local government control over guns shot through the House and to the governor’s desk in the waning hours of the regular session Saturday. House Bill 2578 would prohibit cities and counties from passing or enforcing any ordinance regulating the “purchase, transfer, ownership, storage, carrying, or transporting of firearms, ammunition, or any related component.” It would also ban local units of government from inquiring whether an employee has a permit to carry a concealed weapon. If the governor sign the bill into law, counties and cities could bar municipal employees from carrying weapons in work vehicles and from

On the heels of a Supreme Court decision to lift the ban on aggregate political donation limits, Charles Koch explained his political engagement in the opinion page of the Wall Street Journal. “Unfortunately, the fundamental concepts of dignity, respect, equality before the law and personal freedom are under attack by the nation’s own government. That’s why, if we want to restore a free society and create greater well-being and opportunity for all Americans, we have no choice but to fight for those principles. I have been doing so for more than 50 years, primarily through educational efforts. It was only in

TOPEKA — The Senate voted to halt state spending on Common Core on Thursday night, during debate over a court-ordered fix for funding inequities between school districts. It went on to pass a school finance bill that provides more money for local option budgets if voters approve and removes administrative due process for public school teachers. Senators gave the bill final passage 23-17 a little after 1:30 a.m. Friday. The House will consider its own school finance bill Friday after its budget committee restored cuts to virtual schools, transportation and at-risk funds late Thursday. Sen. Forrest Knox, R-Altoona, introduced an amendment early in the

South Wind Women’s Center says it provided about 1,200 abortions in its first year. The center opened a year ago in the same building where Wichita doctor George Tiller provided abortions before Scott Roeder murdered him in church in 2009. No clinic offered abortions in Wichita after Tiller died until South Wind opened. South Wind said it has seen a total of about 1,500 patients for reproductive care, including abortions up to 14 weeks. Patients have come from across the state and from a few other states, such as Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. Patient numbers are “right in line with our projections,” said Julie

A judge in Wichita has ordered a federal commission to enforce Kansas and Arizona laws requiring documents such as a birth certificate proving citizenship for new voters. U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren ordered the Election Assistance Commission to immediately add Kansas- and Arizona-specific instructions to the federal voter registration form. Those instructions will say that new registrants will have to provide documents proving citizenship before they are allowed to vote, as required by state law. For most people, that means either a birth certificate or passport.

Rebel Pundit interviewed the community this week about Barack Obama’s open border policies and his spending on the illegal immigrant community. Let’s just say – they are NOT HAPPY. One local resident even says, “Barack Obama will go down as the worst president ever elected.” The Chicago resident below says: “With the president setting aside all these funds for immigrants and forsaken African-American community and African-American families, I think that’s a disgrace. And Barack is from the heart of 55th in the City of Chicago… He will probably go down as the worst president ever elected. Bill Clinton was the African-American president.“

Sarah Palin wants to impeach Barack Obama. In an op-ed article published last week, the former Republican vice presidential nominee declared that the crisis on the southern border (where young illegal immigrants are being detained) "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´No, mas´." The Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner, thinks that´s loco. (Technically, he said, "I disagree".) For Republicans hoping to avoid the kind of drama that might derail what looks to be a very good midterm election year, this kind of call is both a nuisance and a trend. In a world where there are no

On April 1, the U.S. economy dropped a whopping 2.9 percent for the first three months of the year (no fooling). The American workforce participation rate fell to a 40-year low. One-third of people aged 18-29 have moved back in with their parents. Millions of Americans this summer will enjoy yet another “staycation”: They just can’t afford to go to the beach or the mountains, even for a week — again. (Snip) Forget that the United States is deep into what Mr. Obama dramatically declares a “humanitarian crisis,” that the Middle East is a powder keg about to blow, that Iraq has all but fallen to Islamist terrorists. In his weekly radio/YouTube address, President Obama derided House Republicans’ planned lawsuit against him, warning that GOP lawmakers will spend taxpayer dollars on a frivolous legal challenge. “It’s a political stunt that’s going to waste months of America’s time. And by the way, they’re going to pay for it using your hard-earned tax dollars,” Obama said. President Obama is “absolutely” the most transparent president in history, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Sunday after the White House received a letter from signed by a dozen top journalists’ groups complaining about the administration’s policies toward the media. “There are a number of steps that we´ve taken to give people greater insight into what´s happening at the White House,” Earnest said in an interview with CNN’s “Reliable Sources.” The letter, signed by the Society of Professional Journalists and the Poynter Institute, among others, accuses the White House of "politically driven suppression of news and information about federal agencies." Angry Democrats in Nebraska said the Obama Outhouse float in the 4th of July parade may have been racist. So now Eric Holder is looking into it. Omaha.com reported: The U.S. Department of Justice has joined the discussions over a controversial float in the Norfolk Independence Day parade. The department sent a member of its Community Relations Service team, which gets involved in discrimination disputes, to a Thursday meeting about the issue. Also at the meeting were the NAACP, the Norfolk mayor and The Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The Odd Fellows organized the parade. Friday on "Democracy Now," Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) attacked his "shameful" Republican colleagues for wanting to change the 2008 child trafficking law so that the children from from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador current streaming across the border in hopes of evading deportation will be treated the same as those from Mexico before approving the $3.7 billion in emergency funding the president has requested. The Illinois Democrat said, "I think it is shameful that in the Congress of the U.S. we see members of Congress engendering and creating fear of children. We should be protecting children, not creating fear of them." Yesterday,

The “ugly American” has gotten a lot uglier over the past few weeks, from the streets of California to the halls of Congress and state houses around the country. A growing number of our fellow Americans have taken on grotesque features, in looks and sounds, in reaction to the thousands of children from Central America who have crossed our borders as they flee poverty and violence in hope for something better. Sadly, the arrival of these youngsters has been greeted by flag-waving, sign-carrying, Bible-thumping and Constitution-quoting citizens demanding that they not be received here and that they be returned immediately to their
