Apple vs. Samsung: Why dispute could
quash smartphone access for minorities

Fox News, by John Burnett

Original Article

Posted By:cjjeepercreeper, 3/30/2014 11:45:12 AM

The surge in the popularity of inexpensive but cutting-edge smartphones is more than just another marketplace success story. It is one with profound social implications, particularly among low-income Black and Hispanic consumers who have long been on the losing end of the digital divide. If there has been any recent development that has helped to bridge that divide in communities like my own here in Harlem, it has been the advent of low-priced smartphones. Indeed, studies have shown that Black and Hispanics access the Internet on a cellphone, tablets or other mobile handheld devices at demonstrably higher rates than whites.

Comments:
I didn´t post this because of the potential lack of access for certain groups, I posted this as yet another example of an arrogant, has-been company fighting to stay on top any way they can and fighting a losing battle with inferior products. Seeya Apple, keep on pi$$ing people off.

Please post properly as shown. LCom Staff.

So patents should be ignored because "the poor" need smartphones?

So instead of Obama phones we will probably move on to Obama start phones with Americans who do pay taxes defraying the increased cost of smart phones for minorities.

Take apart an iPad and that precious Retina display is made by.....Samsung.

I have had precisely one Apple device in my entire life: an iPhone 3GS. I kept it for four years and then upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy Note II. I don´t miss Apple, iTunes, or my iPhone.

Apple´s view is certainly very ´1984-ish´. Oh the irony.

Why worry about smartphone access? Just plain vanilla cell phone. Obama said that cell phones aren´t important:

I guess what I would say, if you looked at that person´s budget, and you looked at their cable bill, their cell phone bill, other things that they´re spending on, it may turn out that it´s just they haven´t prioritized health care because right now everybody is healthy.

Why inject race into the patent dispute between Apple and Samsung? The writer could have analyzed the dispute on the basis of how it may impact ALL low-income people who can´t afford high-priced smartphones. Maybe he is trying to play the race-card on behalf of Samsung.

Everything in the world seems to affect minorities in a bad way. That being the case, they would be better off moving somewhere where they are in the majority, and enjoying all the benefits of paying for the minority.

They will just go downtown and steal them from white people. Apple needs to come up with a way to disable stolen phones but they won´t because it is bad for sales and that arrogant company has no respect for its customers

Okay, so if Apple defends its patents to protect its shareholders and business that´s racist?

Got it - to be fair Apple should give its technology to everybody for free so it can be given to the poor for free.

And as far as a display being made by Samsung for Apple, Apples claim is theft of operating system tech - not hardware. And soon Apples new display manufacturing plants (in the USA, by the way) will come online so that work will be taken from Samsung.

Samsung already lost one patent fight, having to pay Microsoft a fee for every Android powered phone they sell, why is that acceptable but the fact that Apple may have a legitimate claim not?

Samsung shamelessly rips off Apple´s beautifully designed hardware, to the point where their devices (running Google´s stolen mobile OS) are barely distinguishable from Apple´s… and we´re supposed to cheer about pathetic trademark enforcement. I am white and all I can afford is my ´stupid´ phone--a cheap Trac Fone that I bought for a whopping $14.99 at Target. It charges me $16.99 a month for 200 minutes a month (for 2 phones--one for me and one for my son). No fancy stuff, no wi-fi. I have over 800 minutes saved up--I only carry it for emergencies. If I can live with it, so can the ´minorities´.

God forbid that "minorities" might not be able to obtain the latest hi-tech products. The tax payers are already paying for Obamaphones. Since so many of these minorities are "independent pharmaceutical salesmen" I guess their phones will have to be upgraded so these entrepreneurs can access their clients. At our expense, of course.

George Herman “Babe” Ruth played his first Major League Baseball game 100 years ago Friday, marking the beginning of a legendary career and legacy that lasted decades. One hundred years after Ruth took to the Fenway Park mound and tossed seven innings against the Cleveland Naps, he is still known to any Pee Wee league player trying to break in a glove today as simply, "The Babe." Ruth, who was 19 and, according to one teammate, looked like a "big overgrown pea" at the start of the game, went on to play for 22 years, 15 of those with the

Along with piteous pictures of children flooding across our borders and being distributed across the country courtesy of US taxpayers come disease vectors. Maybe flying them around to various parts of the country isn’t the smartest idea. NBC News reports: A border patrol agent was diagnosed with scabies after processing undocumented immigrants in Otay Mesa, California, the agent´s union representative said. Ronald Zermeno, health and safety director for the National Border Control Council union, said the agent told him that he observed several people with open sores while screening them in preparation to be released to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

FARMINGTON — New Mexico drivers will be prohibited from using cellphones to send or view text messages while driving when a new law to prevent distracted driving goes into effect on Tuesday. In March, Gov. Susana Martinez signed Senate Bill 19, which penalizes drivers for texting while their vehicles are in motion. The bill becomes law on Tuesday. Drivers cited for texting while driving face a $25 fine for the first violation and $50 for subsequent violations. The law states a person shall not read or view a text or manually type on a mobile communication device for any purpose

Of the many stunning revelations to emerge out of the wreckage of Mosul on Wednesday — 500,000 fleeing residents, thousands of freed prisoners, unconfirmed reports of “mass beheadings” — the one that may have the most lasting impact as Iraq descends into a possible civil war is that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria just got extremely rich. As insurgents rolled past Iraq’s second largest city, an oil hub at the vital intersection of Syria, Iraq and Turkey, and into Tikrit, several gunmen stopped at Mosul’s central bank. The BBC reported that Father Jamie MacLeod found Anthony Van Dyck’s Flemish Baroque work 12 years ago in a Cheshire antique shop. Father MacLeod, who runs a retreat in the Peak District, told the BBC he was "not being greedy" by selling the painting.

The evidence is clear that Eric Holder and his political subordinates have politicized the Justice Department to an unprecedented degree — “worse than John Mitchell under Richard Nixon” one former Justice Department lawyer told the authors. This is quite a criticism given that many DOJ veterans believe that the Department reached its nadir under Mitchell. But Mitchell seems like an amateur by comparison to how Holder has corrupted the law enforcement duties of the Justice Department to carry out the political objectives of Barack Obama and to implement his radical ideology.
