Healing the ‘Invisible Wound’

Lt. Col. (Ret.) Dar Place was two feet away when his friend and fellow soldier took his own life during the Gulf War. Two decades later, like so many other veterans, Place is still haunted by the plague of suicide in the military. “I personally saw my driver after Desert Storm in his tank put a gun underneath his mouth and pull the trigger, while I was no further away from him than I am from you right now,”

I think many L-dotters and their grown children know lots of active duty and vets. We need to educate ourselves on what the signs are and be mentally ready to take action to help. I had a friend in the Air Force go through a devastating with medical and personal problems. He dropped a few hints and drove off to do the deed but we found him in time.A few years later he wrote me a note to say thanks. It´s one of my great treasures.

Today I was talking to a Marine who had come back home after being injured. He had isolated himself from society for years, and was now working with a Veterans group to provide social support to other veterans. We agreed that isolation was a killer and that too many returning veterans closet themselves and stew in their own depression. While you can´t lead a horse to water and expect him to drink, including returning vets in social events can show the that they are valued members of the community.

The VFW and other social Veterans organizations were crucial to returning WWII and Korean vets. They provided that human association with those who have been there that the returning vets need. I hope that they are being supported before the WWII/Korea/VN vets die off and the organizations fold up.

LONDON -- Artist Tracey Emin has sold her bed - and the disheveled sheets, empty vodka bottles, cigarette butts and discarded condoms were part of the lucrative deal. Emin´s artwork "My Bed" sold for 2.54 million pounds ($4.4 million) at a London auction Tuesday, more than double the pre-sale estimate and four times the previous record for the artist. Emin, who has mined her tumultuous personal life for some of her best-known works, attended the auction and grinned when the hammer came down. The work was sold by collector Charles Saatchi, an early supporter of Emin and other modern British artists.

TIMBER COVE - One could hardly blame Ray Frost for breaking down when he was reunited with his dog, Mike, a few days ago. Frost and most of his family had given up hope of seeing their beloved shepherd mix ever again after he disappeared seven weeks ago. So when two fishermen at the bottom of a cliff stumbled upon an emaciated dog Thursday night with just enough energy left to nab one of their fish, it was as if a miracle had befallen Frost, his wife and their three grieving daughters.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) reported in its General Social Survey (GSS) that unprecedented numbers of Americans are lonely. Published in the American Sociological Review (ASR) and authored by Miller McPhearson, Lynn Smith-Lovin, and Matthew Brashears, sociologists at Duke and the University of Arizona, the study featured 1,500 face-to-face interviews where more than a quarter of the respondents — one in four — said that they have no one with whom they can talk about their personal troubles or triumphs.

Christa Liedtke, 75, decided to sell the half-timbered house near Cologne three years ago, after she began to find the steep stairs too much to handle. She fell in love with the house in 2005 and poured thousands of euros into renovating it. "As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the one," she said. “In 2011 I wanted to sell it, with a heavy heart, and that’s when this all started.” Local authority officials told her she had to pull it down because there was no planning permission to build the house in the first place.

A jury ruled Sonoma County Supervisor Efren Carrillo was not guilty of attempting to peek into a neighbor´s home. The decision came shortly after the panel could not reach a unanimous verdict on whether Carrillo actually looked into her apartment. Judge Gary Medvigy then ruled the jury could consider the lesser charge of attempted peeking without deciding the more serious charge of peeking. Defense attorney Chris Andrian objected to the decision, arguing the original count should be dismissed before the jury could consider any new charges. After the verdict, Carrillo said he would "like to move on and put this behind

Lake County, Calif. – A young man who grew up in Lake County and faced a deportation battle last year celebrated becoming a United States citizen on Friday. Carlos Solorzano took the oath of citizenship in US District Court in Anchorage, Alaska. Solorzano´s immigration attorney, Margaret Stock, described his mood as “ecstatic.” That important milestone, Solorzano told Lake County News on Friday afternoon, came “after a long and pretty tough fight.” Aiding him in that fight was Stock. A retired lieutenant colonel in the Military Police, US Army Reserve, and a former West Point law professor – Stock isn't just tough and talented,

“Without borders, there is no nation,” former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin wrote in a Breitbart op-ed this week. “Obama knows this. Opening our borders to a flood of illegal immigrants is deliberate. This is his fundamental transformation of America ... President Obama´s rewarding of lawlessness, including his own, is the foundational problem here ... It´s time to impeach; and on behalf of American workers and legal immigrants of all backgrounds, we should vehemently oppose any politician on the Left or Right who would hesitate in voting for articles of impeachment.” That this desperate cry for attention (dangling participle and all)

It’s true what they say about Michelle Obama. She has amazing arms. I saw this up close when she unfurled her bare right limb in front of me Thursday night, while the two of us were doing tapas at the jumping Barcelona on 14th Street NW. Clearly the first lady works out, clearly she moisturizes and clearly L’Oréal should hire her as its pitchwoman after she leaves 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. “Ma’am, you rock,” I wanted to tell her, even though I was seated a table away from her party of eight, which included White House chef Sam Kass, and was

In his weekly radio/YouTube address, President Obama derided House Republicans’ planned lawsuit against him, warning that GOP lawmakers will spend taxpayer dollars on a frivolous legal challenge. “It’s a political stunt that’s going to waste months of America’s time. Also at the meeting were the NAACP, the Norfolk mayor and The Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The Odd Fellows organized the parade. One of the floats included a zombie-like mannequin standing near

BOSTON — Comedian Bill Cosby and his wife Camille are supporting protesters marching across Massachusetts in opposition to Kinder Morgan’s proposed natural gas pipeline. The couple, who own hundreds of acres of protected land in Shelburne Falls, about 100 miles west of Boston, have been opposed to the pipeline since the company notified them last winter of plans to survey their land. Through a spokesman, the couple said it was “astounding” that New England’s six governors support the proposal, which they said shows “disrespect for humans, flora and fauna.” Supporters of the $3.75 billion Northeast Pipeline Extension Project say it will provide

Glenn Beck has set up Mercury One Children and Family Border Relief Fund to help illegals coming into the United States. He’s already raised $600,000. Beck stated that Obama would not have to step in and ask for $3.7 billion if private charities would pick up the slack and give to the swarm of illegals crossing the border. Is he kidding? Do we really need more churches and non-profits enabling this blatant attack on America? Rich people and liberal elite billionaires have no skin in the game when it comes to the consequences of illegal immigration so what do they care? It’s the working class and middle class who will take the hit.

On Friday’s broadcast of PBS’s “NewsHour” New York Times columnist David Brooks and Creators Syndicate columnist Mark Shields took on the House Speaker John Boehner’s lawsuit against the Obama administration, which alleges oversteps in executive authority by the Obama White House. Both acknowledged Boehner’s gripe with the Obama administration had merit, but were skeptical of the lawsuit’s chances. However, they both also took on the alternative offered by former Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK), which was to impeach President Barack Obama. Both dismissed that course of action as well, with Brooks calling it “cloud cuckoo land.” Partial transcript as follows: WOODRUFF: So the Highway Trust
