Study backs nonsurgical
way to fix heart valves

Associated Press, by Marilynn Marchione

Washington - A new study gives a big boost to fixing a bad aortic valve, the heart´s main gate, without open-heart surgery. Survival rates were better one year later for people who had a new valve placed through a tube into an artery instead. (Snip) Several hundred thousand Americans have a bad aortic valve, which can stiffen and narrow with age, keeping blood from passing through as it should. Until a few years ago, the only solution was a major operation to open the chest, cut out the bad valve and sew in a new one. That changed in 2011, when Edwards Lifesciences Inc. won federal approval for an expandable valve that could fit in a catheter into

This is good news. My mother died of aortic stenosis seven years ago. She had the option of open heart surgery, but chose not to have it. Too bad this wasn´t available to her back then.

Article does not make it clear that this is probably a lot *cheaper*, like 1/10 as much, to do than open-heart, besides being less risky and seeming to have at least as good an outcome.

But the strokes business is still a question, I guess. I wonder how many "healthy" people, controlled for age, have strokes in an average year?

What’s transpiring on the Texas-Mexico border could turn out to be an even bigger story than many of us realize. What could be bigger than a humanitarian crisis, with thousands of children caught in the cross-fire between lawless Latin American regimes and the lawless regime in our White House? What could be bigger than potentially allowing scores of criminals and other ne’er-do-wells to use these children as human shields that allow them to enter our country illegally? How about the opening salvo in America’s next major political realignment? Conventional wisdom says the story here is President Obama’s dereliction of

York, UK: The Church of England overcame bitter divisions on Monday to vote in favour of allowing female bishops for the first time in its nearly 500-year history. The decision reverses a previous shock rejection in 2012 and comes after intensive diplomacy by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. Cheers erupted in the hall at the Church of England General Synod in York, northern England, as the measure passed. The first women bishops could now be appointed before the end of the year. The Church of England is the mother church of the global Anglican Communion, followed by some 80 million people in over 165 countries.

Qatar plans to buy US Patriot missile batteries and Apache attack helicopters in an arms deal worth about $11 billion, senior Pentagon officials said Monday. The sale would provide Qatar with roughly ten radars and 34 launchers for Patriot systems designed to knock out incoming missiles, as well as 24 Apache helicopters and Javelin anti-tank missiles. Qatar was investing in missile defense systems to counter the threat across the Gulf from Iran, which has built up its missile arsenal, officials said. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Matthews Burwell met privately with dozens of governors Sunday at the National Governors Association summer meeting in Nashville. Even Texas Gov. Rick Perry, personally recruited by the president to persuade Republicans to support the measure, threw cold water on the idea. He said the president doesn’t need that much money and instead should send National Guard troops to secure the border. The apparent defeat caps a whirlwind several days

Sarah Palin wants to impeach Barack Obama. In an op-ed article published last week, the former Republican vice presidential nominee declared that the crisis on the southern border (where young illegal immigrants are being detained) "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´No, mas´." For Republicans hoping to avoid the kind of drama that might derail what looks to be a very good midterm election year, this kind of call is both a nuisance and a trend. It was two weeks before news was reported on the sole child death acknowledged by the Obama administration, Gilberto Ramos, a 15 year-old boy from Guatemala whose body was found in the Texas brush dead from the
