US consumer spending
up modest 0.3 percent

Associated Press, by Martin Crutsinger

Washington — Americans barely increased their spending in February following a weak January performance, strong evidence that the severe winter will hold back the economy in the first quarter. Consumer spending rose 0.3 percent in February following an even weaker 0.2 percent rise in January, the Commerce Department reported Friday. The January performance was cut in half from an initial estimate of 0.4 percent. For February, spending on autos and other durable goods actually fell and much of the small gain reflected higher utility payments to pay heating costs. Analysts said consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of economic activity, has

The socialists´ Summer-Fall-Winter-Spring-Summer etc of Recovery crackles onward, recovering us back their beloved Depression days ("please save us, big government!"). Commerce Department experts add that there´s very little inflation, meaning they´re looking only at the luxury goods they buy, not the groceries, all forms of insurance, all forms of utilities, food, gasoline, etc that the rest of us don ´t get for free.

Obama´s original GDP forecast for 2013 was + 4.0%, then revised down to + 3.5%. Actual GDP growth of just + 1.9% must have been due to last summer´s heavy snowfall that kept consumers from buying swimsuits.

With 1stQ 2014 looking very weak, how will the economy reach the 3.1% growth forecast shown above? After paying for higher food, energy and health care costs, consumers won´t have enough left to spur the economy.

Tequixquiac, Mexico — Claudia Sanchez crouched on a grassy slope alongside the railroad tracks, breast-feeding her 10-month-old daughter, Heather. It had already been a long journey from Honduras to central Mexico, clinging with her baby to the top of a rickety train. They still had a thousand or so miles to go to reach the U.S. border. University of California President Janet Napolitano said Friday that a new panel of 75 to 100 people will oversee UC´s efforts to deal with sexual violence at its 10 campuses. The announcement comes just days before the state auditor is expected to issue a report on how UC´s flagship campuses - UC Berkeley and UCLA - handle sexual assault complaints. State lawmakers had authorized the audit during an emotional hearing in Sacramento in August after nine UC Berkeley students and alumnae accused campus officials of treating their assault allegations far too lightly. The nine who came forward have ignited national attention on

For more than a decade, the CIA has deployed drones, satellites, spies, informants and tracking devices to thwart al-Qaeda in Pakistan. The spy agency also considered a plan to wage war with toys. Beginning in about 2005, the CIA began secretly developing a custom-made Osama bin Laden action figure, according to people familiar with the project. The face of the figure was painted with a heat-dissolving material, designed to peel off and reveal a red-faced bin Laden who looked like a demon, with piercing green eyes and black facial markings. Detroit — The top legislative body of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) voted by large margins Thursday to recognize same-sex marriage as Christian in the church constitution, adding language that marriage can be the union of "two people," not just "a man and a woman." The amendment approved by the Presbyterian General Assembly requires approval from a majority of the 172 regional presbyteries, which will vote on the change over the next year. But in a separate policy change that takes effect at the end of this week´s meeting, delegates voted to allow ministers to preside at gay weddings in states

Washington parents are outraged after the state released a convicted rapist who nearly beat a 3-year-old girl to death and sexually assaulted at least three boys. Cory Roberts, now 37, was first convicted in 1990 after he raped and battered a toddler, leaving her paralyzed and brain damaged. He was freed once in 2001, only to be convicted of a similar crime weeks later. But now, King County said he´s no longer a threat. Roberts was released on Monday, Seattle´s KING 5 reported. The $34 million Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, envisioned as a pillar of development in the state’s most populous city when it opened in 1999, is mostly silent this season after the Newark Bears folded amid dwindling attendance. The owners are trying to sell the club after putting belongings, including the team bus, up for auction in April. Your server keeps a copy of that e-mail, and of all your e-mails – sent and received. When you create all the folders in your e-mail program that you use to save e-mails in...these are also

The South Dakota Republican Party state convention passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Barack Obama Saturday. The resolution says Obama has "violated his oath of office in numerous ways." It specifically cites the release of five Taliban combatants in a trade for captive U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl, Obama´s statement that people could keep insurance companies, and recent EPA regulations on power plants. "Therefore, be it resolved that the South Dakota Republican Party calls on our U.S. Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president of the United States," the resolution reads. I still think President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, even though for 14 years he allowed his literary agent to circulate a bio blurb stating he was born in Kenya, and even though for many years he attended a church where his pastor friend shouted such things as “God damn America!” I still think that he just pretended to be Kenyan to be cool, to sell books and, perhaps, to get a foreign student scholarship at those colleges from which he refuses to release his transcripts. He’s probably not actually Kenyan. But as I speculated

Call it Paul Ryan’s finest hour. It’s a video of the congressman from Wisconsin confronting the commissioner of Internal Revenue over the missing Lois Lerner emails. They don’t believe Commissioner John Koskinen is telling the truth. They don’t believe him. Mr. Koskinen protested. No one believed that either. Mr. Ryan’s ire was triggered by the suggestion of one of the Democrats that Mr. Koskinen

The decision this past week by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to rescind federal trademark protections for the Redskins may ultimately tip the balance in the controversy over the 80-year-old name of Washington’s football team. If so, that would be a shame. Not because there’s insufficient reason to consider the name “disparaging to Native Americans,” as the patent office determined. Many of us recoil at the reference to skin color as a team identity. The problem is that the Redskins case is just the latest example of a federal agency going beyond its brief to inappropriately insert itself in

All the time I was growing up in Atlanta, the face of Robert E. Lee was taking shape on the side of an enormous granite mountain just outside town. When I was in elementary school, the face of Lee on Stone Mountain was a rough-cut thing, weathering and wasting as the generation that began it in 1912—a generation

Outwardly, they put on a show of unity — but privately, the Obamas and Clintons, the two power couples of the Democrat Party, loathe each other. “I hate that man Obama more than any man I’ve ever met, more than any man who ever lived,” Bill Clinton said to friends on one occasion, adding he would never forgive Obama for suggesting he was a racist during the 2008 campaign. The feeling is mutual. Obama made excuses not to talk to Bill, while the first lady privately sniped about Hillary. The least loved institution in America today is the U.S. Senate, and one of the reasons it is reviled is a zero-sum approach to women´s medical care. It´s time we changed that and adopt modern policies that make sense instead of using women´s medical issues as an election-year power play. One of the most rational ways for Washington to break this gridlock is to approve oral contraception for over-the-counter purchases by adults. Since "the pill" was first approved 44 years ago, it´s been one of the most proven and tested pharmaceuticals of our time. It is safe, reliable, effective, and presents
