Wal-Mart sues Visa for $5
billion over card swipe fees

Wal-Mart Stores Inc this week sued Visa Inc for $5 billion, accusing the credit and debit card network of excessively high card swipe fees, several months after the retailer opted out of a class action settlement between merchants and Visa and MasterCard Inc. Visa declined to comment on the suit, filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas, where Wal-Mart is headquartered. Visa and other card networks charge retailers fees, called swipe fees or interchange fees, each time a shopper uses a debit or credit card to pay. In December, a federal judge in Brooklyn,

Credit card fees to merchants is quite a racket. Overcharge the retailer for a swipe fee, then turn around and get more fees selling the data to the goobermint so the goobermint knows what citizens bought.

My daughter and I found that many businesses, including gas stations, would not accept American Express because of their high fees charged to the merchants. Why have a card if too many businesses refuse to accept them? So we let the cards expire and cancelled the account.

Another time our Bank switched from Visa to Mastercard. Never found out why, only heard rumors about Visa.

I suppose from this story that most card businesses are greedy to want to make billions rather than be satisfied with a reasonable profit.

But then they are not alone, if you look at how businesses, especially the gas industry jacks up their prices for no real reason other than greed. Yes it has jumped again here but worse in California. The beef industry (as oppose to the grocery stores) is now jacking their prices. I was shocked at the cost of meat at the market yesterday. Looks to me it is at least twice, maybe three times, higher than it is worth.

Perhaps people should wake up (or grow up) and reevaluate their method of voting for criminals.

Last week, a self-described heir to the Prophet Muhammad declared himself the supreme leader of a new Islamic state stretching from eastern Syria to northern Iraq. How did Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the nom de guerre of a mediocre Iraqi religious scholar in his mid-40s, outmaneuver al Qaeda as the new vanguard of jihadist ideology? How did he and his followers—armed with Kalashnikovs, smart phones and their ominous black banner—so suddenly take over the campaign to rid the Muslim world of Western and secular influence? The rise of Mr. Baghdadi and his newly proclaimed "caliphate" highlights what had been a closely held

President Obama came to Texas but Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis did not show up: "Davis didn’t appear with the president during his two-day visit to Texas, careful not to appear too aligned with Obama or his policies while trying to win in a state that hasn’t elected a Democratic governor since 1990 and where disapproval of Obama is high." She went further and criticized President Obama: ""Davis, the Democratic nominee for governor, stopped short of criticizing Obama but expressed hope he would make time for a border visit. “It’s one thing to hear the number. It’s another thing to see for yourself the

As a defender of the nation’s borders, President Obama is a hell of a pool player. The president enjoyed a game at a bar in Denver with Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper the other day, without the noir atmosphere of his furtive visits to pool halls with his grandfather as a kid, when he felt “the enticement of darkness and the click of the cue ball, and the jukebox flashing its red and green lights.” Obama’s game the other day was bright and cheery, as one would expect of a president who didn’t have any depressing visits to frightened ranchers, overwhelmed border agents or desperate migrants on his future itinerary.

Just this week, while teachers, schoolchildren, and families frolic in the summer sun, blessedly free of government supervision at least for these few months, the Obama administration resurfaced an old rule from President Bush’s tenure that may have states redistributing teachers like so many cattle. It attempted the same last September, far more directly, but in the meantime has had its hands busy juggling its many new interpretations of education law to suit the shifting fancies of National Superintendent, er, Education Secretary Arne Duncan. But a big lawsuit win in California last month, in the Vergara case where a judge ruled that

‘Speaker John A. Boehner’s lawsuit against President Obama,” the New York Times confirmed yesterday evening, “will focus on changes to the health care law that Mr. Boehner says should have been left to Congress.” Thus was answered a question that has been percolating for a good month now: On what grounds will the president be taken to task? That Obamacare and not immigration is the proximate target should surprise nobody who is attuned to contemporary politics. Health reform remains a rich source of opportunity for the GOP; immigration an electric fence. But to obsess about the specifics of the assumpsit would

Satellites killed the military radio star operator long ago, but military veterans keep the art alive in competitions testing their ability to bounce signals off the ionosphere and contact amateur radio stations a half world away. In their minds, the contestants know technology has gone too far and the days of radio are past. Still, the intimate knowledge of the electromagnetic spectrum learned during a career in military and intelligence agencies offers some advantages. And the military’s love for antiquated communications is well established—from their use of signal flags to messages sent, teletype-style, in all capital letters. Ham radio competitions

Bonuses paid to top executives at the Department of Veterans Affairs who committed misconduct cannot be rescinded, an agency official testified Friday, in direct contradiction to what he told a different panel less than a month ago. Samuel Retherford, principal deputy assistant secretary for human resources at the veterans´ agency, was asked directly whether bonuses paid to senior executives who created phony medical appointment lists could be rescinded. “Currently we do not have the authority to go back and rescind an award,” Retherford told a House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee Friday.

This much we know: Israel lives under constant threat from terrorists who would like nothing better than to exterminate the Jewish state that they consider an outright abomination. This much we have also come to understand: In polite society, it is increasingly fashionable to roll one’s eyes or outright indict Israel for daring to defend itself against those who aim to indiscriminately kill its people and undermine its right to exist. The cycle continues as Hamas fires hundreds of rockets at Israeli cities, and Israel responds with far more precise and effective salvos at terrorists. All too predictably, international condemnation is starting

Even as he spoke, Palestinian militants fired salvos into central and southern Israel and said their arsenal had barely been dented. Palestinian deaths from four days of Israeli aerial assaults surpassed 100, with hundreds wounded. As of Friday, no Israelis had been killed by Gaza rockets, although one caused the first serious instance of multiple injuries on the Israeli side

Thirteen green-and-yellow Harley-Davidsons and a single black Cadillac Escalade roared down the old Airline Highway between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, passing the ruins of an abandoned sugar factory and the plumes of still-operating oil refineries. The decline is especially pronounced on a range of issues wrapped up with religion and sex. For a time, electoral self-interest kept these intolerant tendencies in check, since the strongly liberal position on

Bears, beer and horse heads: What exactly is going on with the leader of the free world? On a single day this week in Denver, President Obama scarfed down pizza and drinks with strangers, shot pool with Colorado’s governor and shook hands with a guy on the street wearing a horse mask. His top staffers are promoting these stops on Twitter with the hashtag #TheBearIsLoose — a term one of Obama’s aides coined in 2008 when the candidate would defy his schedule. More than five years into his presidency, Obama is trying to free himself from the constraints of office,

Glenn Beck has set up Mercury One Children and Family Border Relief Fund to help illegals coming into the United States. He’s already raised $600,000. Beck stated that Obama would not have to step in and ask for $3.7 billion if private charities would pick up the slack and give to the swarm of illegals crossing the border. Is he kidding? Do we really need more churches and non-profits enabling this blatant attack on America?
