Russia’s anti-Western ideology

Washington Post, by Anne Applebaum

TBILISI, Georgia Halfway through an otherwise coherent conversation with a Georgian lawyer here — the topics included judges, the court system, the police — I was startled by a comment he made about his country’s former government, led by then-president Mikheil Saakashvili. “They were LGBT,” he said, conspiratorially. What did that mean, I asked, surprised. Were they for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights? For gay marriage? Were they actually gay? He couldn’t really define it, though the conversation meandered in that direction for a few more minutes, also touching on the subject of the former president’s alleged marital infidelity,

A very weak essay. What is playing out in Russia and its neighbor is just a continuation of what has been going in that region for centuries. The writer doesn’t grasp that and instead dredges up the liberal, preposterous, claim that America and the West are not corrupt while Russia is hopelessly corrupt. That is untrue. In particular the media in America is totally corrupt. Only news that fits their liberal agenda gets reported. Dissenting, conservative views are dismissed and suppressed. Obama is a narcissistic, incompetent buffoon who couldn´t run a lemonade stand without two assistants and a teleprompter. Yet he is President and the world laughs at us. In spite of this the media does everything they possibly can to protect and promote him. They are his Praetorian Guard. America is in deep trouble, financially ($17+ trillion in debt), socially (breakdown of the family) and culturally. The endless, mindless focus on race and gender by liberals like Applebaum is extremely damaging and destructive to America. At least Russia has a leader who loves his country. America has exactly the opposite. A hapless Alinskyite fool who is trying to tear America down.

Daniel Keyes, the author of the enduring classic “Flowers for Algernon,” the fictional account of a mouse and a man whose IQs are artificially, temporarily and tragically increased, died June 15 at his home in southern Florida. He was 86. The cause was complications from pneumonia, said his daughter Leslie Keyes. First published in 1959 as a short story, “Flowers for Algernon” was released in novel form in 1966 and has since sold millions of copies. Generations of English students have met Charlie Gordon, the book’s narrator, through the journal entries Mr. Keyes crafted in stunted, then elegant and then

Keep hope alive, says Jonathan Last. Not only has she been gaffe-ing up America’s airwaves — the “dead broke” remark, that gay-marriage meltdown interview with NPR, and some offhanded inanity about how smart the Russian reset was — but it’s all been happening against a backdrop of fiasco for American foreign policy. How’d you like to be a former Secretary of State running on this record? Obama — perhaps you’ve heard this? — got bin Laden. But other than that, his foreign policy record is disastrous: Libya, Egypt, Syria, the South China Sea, Crimea, Iraq, Afghanistan. It is difficult to

In speaking about the new Wall Street Journal/NBC poll that Jonathan refers to, NBC’s White House correspondent Chuck Todd told the Morning Joe crew This poll is a disaster for the president…. You look at the presidency here: lowest job rating, tied for the lowest; lowest on foreign policy… Then on the issue of do you believe you can still lead, and a majority believe not. Essentially the public is saying, “Your presidency is over” by saying a number like that. Fifty-four percent saying he no longer has the ability to lead and solve problems. US officials announced Tuesday that a joint Special Forces and FBI operation successfully nabbed Libyan national Ahmed Abu Khatallah, the man suspected as the "ringleader" for the 2012 attack on the American Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Just one month following the attack, in October 2012, Fox News spoke to Khatallah in an off-camera interview. While the suspected militant admitted to being in the area of the compound, he denied that he had planned the attack. The Fox reporter was taken aback at how easy it was to find and contact Khatallah. CNN interviewed Khatallah in May 2013 at a well-known

WASHINGTON — The arrest of a key suspect in the Sept. 11, 2012, consulate bombing simply opened new controversy in the Benghazi attack, with Republicans questioning how the administration plans to handle the Ansar al-Sharia commander. Ahmed Abu Khatallah, the subject of criminal charges filed last July, had been essentially living in the open, making himself available for multiple media interviews since the attack that killed four Americans including Ambassador Chris Stevens. “With this operation, the United States has once again demonstrated that we will do whatever it takes to see that justice is done when people harm Americans,” President

I guess it´s time to award President Obama a second asterisk. When charges came out that the IRS targeted Tea Party groups for harassment, the Wall Street Journal´s James Taranto started calling Obama "President Asterisk." His point was that this illicit assistance tainted the election, the way an athlete´s use of illegal performance-enhancers results in an asterisk on any records he sets. Now it may be time for another asterisk. As Congress investigates the IRS chicanery, the IRS has responded to a request for emails to and from Lois Lerner, who spearheaded the Tea Party harassment, by saying, basically, that

Via the Free Beacon, make sure to read Ed’s post earlier to understand just how openly Khattala, the jihadi nabbed by U.S. forces over the weekend, has been living in Libya since the Benghazi attack. He was a prime suspect from the very beginning; he gave multiple interviews to western media in the years since, all but taunting the White House to come pick him up. The criminal charges against him were filed more than nine months ago. Only this month, for some reason, did the military finally move in. How come? Two possibilities. IRBIL, Iraq — Al-Qaeda-inspired insurgents battled government forces in several locations across Iraq on Monday, as the United Nations said the insurgents almost certainly had committed war crimes by carrying out “cold-blooded executions” in their drive for power. The stunning offensive by fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) poses “an existential challenge” to Iraq and threatens the stability of the region, Secretary of State John F. Kerry said Monday. He said President Obama is considering “every option that is available,” including airstrikes. In a highly unusual move, Iranian and U.S. diplomats on Monday discussed possible cooperation

The Defense Department has enough forces in the Persian Gulf to conduct airstrikes that would probably prevent Sunni insurgents from marching into Baghdad, but other missions would be far more complex and risk drawing the United States back into an Iraqi civil war, according to retired military commanders. The Pentagon announced that the USS Mesa Verde, an amphibious transport dock ship, had arrived in the gulf on Monday to join an aircraft carrier, a destroyer and a guided-missile cruiser. Together, the warships carry a large number of fighter jets and search-and-rescue aircraft, along with Tomahawk cruise missiles and other ordnance,

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Patent Office ruled Wednesday that the Washington Redskins nickname is "disparaging of Native Americans" and that the team´s federal trademarks for the name must be canceled. The 2-1 ruling comes after a campaign to change the name has gained momentum over the past year. The team doesn´t immediately lose trademark protection and is allowed to retain it during an appeal. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has refused to change the team´s name, citing tradition, but there has been growing pressure including statements in recent months from President Barack Obama, lawmakers of both parties and civil rights groups.

In what some see as the first step to forcing the Washington Redskins football team to change their name, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Wednesday cancelled six federal trademarks of the team name because it´s “disparaging” to Native Americans. “Petitioners have shown by a preponderance of the evidence that a substantial composite of Native Americans found the term REDSKINS to be disparaging,” said the decision. Fans, however, won’t see any immediate change — even if Daniel Snyder’s team eventually loses in court. That’s because all the order will do is eliminate the trademark the team has on merchandise. The Redskins are expected to appeal.

Hillary Clinton´s minions are hard at work assembling a political machine and fine tuning it for another go at the White House. Mrs. Clinton is doing her part preparing for a run as well, churning out a bland memoir about the "hard choices" she faced as secretary of state and coyly positioning herself (again) as the inevitable nominee of the party. But after the troubled beginning to her book tour, we´re beginning to see the reasons why Hillary may eventually decide to pull the plug on a 2016 presidential run. Here are five: 1) She´s just not that good at campaigning. If the last two gaffe-prone weeks have reminded us of anything about Hillary,

While the guidelines will initially be voluntary, health groups are lobbying for mandatory standards–lobbying that will only grow more intense if businesses refuse to comply once the standards are released. You were right. Liberals, you were right; we shouldn’t have.” Beck went on to note that “most people on the left” thought waging war on Iraq was a bad idea “from the beginning.”
