The Big Dreams of Corrupt Politicians
Daily Beast, by Ben Jacobs

Original Article

The arrests of Leland Yee and Patrick Cannon shows that some politicians still have real ambition when it comes to public corruption. Who said politicians lack ambition these days? The twin arrests of California state senator Leland Yee and Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon on Wednesday show that while politicians may have given up on New Deals or taking down Evil Empires, there are still some who dream big. Cannon was elected mayor of Charlotte in November, which incidentally happened to be almost a year into the FBI’s investigation of him. A former city councilman, it is alleged that the North Carolina Democrat

Wendy Davis reassured supporters today that her campaign for governor is making progress despite “the naysayers who say we can’t do this. “I know there is something magical happening in this state. It’s hardto measure in a poll, but I am seeing it.” Davis appeared via Skype at a luncheon sponsored by Annie’s List, which supports Democratic pro-choice women candidates. She is still recuperating from neck surgery and chose to stay in Fort Worth and speak long-distance rather than make the three-hour drive to Austin for the luncheon. Davis trails Abbott in recent polls and analysts say she faces an

Mixed-race families from across Alabama rallied outside the state capitol recently to demand $100,000 in cash — or at least an apology — from a state representative. Earlier this month, Alvin Holmes, who has represented the Montgomery-area 78th District for 39 years, bet a substantial purse on his claim that Alabama whites were incapable of tolerating black children. “I will bring you $100,000 cash tomorrow if you show me a whole bunch of whites that adopted blacks in Alabama,” Holmes said. “I will go down there and mortgage my house and get it in cash in $20 bills and bring

“Yeah, let’s talk about that.” The president wished to change the subject. At a press conference the other day he was being interrogated about Ukraine when a reporter asked a question about health care. Obama was delighted. As the excellent Peter Baker reported in The New York Times, “Mr. Obama seems intent on not letting Russia dominate his presidency.” This is not the first time the president has attempted to resist such intrusions upon his idea of how the world ought to be. He has been trying to escape the Middle East for years and “pivot” to Asia, as if

On January 27, 2008, Penny Boudreau’s twelve-year-old daughter, Karissa, went missing in her hometown of Bridgewater, Canada. That afternoon, mother and daughter had had a fight in a grocery-store parking lot. They’d been having a “heart-to-heart” about “typical teen-age things,” Boudreau said. At 7:30 P.M., Boudreau, worried, called a few friends and teachers—none had heard a thing—and notified the police. By the following day, Karissa was still unaccounted for and the Bridgewater police began notifying other precincts. They issued a media alert and began a full search effort. On January 29th, the police station held a press conference. Penny, distraught, pleaded

LAS VEGAS -- Confidential documents which appear to be from a Nevada Health Link employee may reveal huge problems within the state health exchange. What could be internal memos seem to show the former health exchange CEO knew early on there were problems with premium pricing and tried to hide them from the public. Now, one local law firm is planning a class action lawsuit against Nevada Health Link and Xerox, the company in charge of running the website. The documents were mailed to 8 News NOW and other news outlets around the Las Vegas valley. A note sent with

For a vice president’s daughter, Sarah Gore had a low-key wedding on Sunday in Carpinteria, Calif. But second weddings tend to be more modest affairs, and Sarah, 35, like her parents and her big sisters Kristin and Karenna, is a veteran of a failed marriage. She married Santa Barbara real-estate agent Patrick Maiani this weekend under a pine near a coffee shop, having previously wed tech investor Bill Lee, in 2007. Here are some other daughters of presidents and vice presidents who had splashy weddings.

It is unfortunate that events generally require the commission of a crime of unspeakable magnitude in some unsuspecting community before the media is prodded to, yet again, take up the long overdue reexamination of the various “hate crime” laws peppering the legal code of the federal government and most of the states. Such was the unfortunate case yet again in April of 2014 when Fraizer Glenn Miller, a former grand wizard of the Klan, opened fire at a Jewish community center and an adult care facility in Kansas. Whether Miller “succeeded” in his desire to kill Jews or not (he didn’t,

Gentlemanliness is, without a doubt, Britain´s most enduring export. For Evelyn Waugh, writing breathlessly to Nancy Mitford in 1956, it provided no less than an explanation for ‘all our national greatness´. But, although he spent his entire life in thrall to the concept, he never explained what he actually meant by it. He, like most of us, assumed that you simply knew a gentleman when you saw one. Other writers have only managed to come up with partial definitions. For George Bernard Shaw, a gentleman always ‘puts more into the world than he takes out´. Oscar Wilde thought that a gentleman

First lady Michelle Obama took her campaign to help veterans find jobs to Fort Campbell, Ky.., Wednesday where she said that most Americans don´t know much about the military. Following comments from Jill Biden, the vice president´s wife and Obama´s teammate in helping veterans, she noted that unlike Biden, she had little familiarity with the military prior to campaigning for the White House in 2008. “Unlike Jill, I wasn´t a military mom. I wasn´t a Blue Star family member. I didn´t know much about the military, and I was probably more like the average American,” said Obama.

At least 40 U.S. veterans died waiting for appointments at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care system, many of whom were placed on a secret waiting list. The secret list was part of an elaborate scheme designed by Veterans Affairs managers in Phoenix who were trying to hide that 1,400 to 1,600 sick veterans were forced to wait months to see a doctor, according to a recently retired top VA doctor and several high-level sources. For six months, CNN has been reporting on extended delays in health care appointments suffered by veterans across the country and who died while waiting for appointments and care.

It wasn´t that he was particularly conservative -- he had no prior political record, and had even donated to Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow.
