Britain: 2 People Catch
Tuberculosis from Pet Cat

London - England’s public health agency says two people have caught tuberculosis from a pet cat, the first time the bacterial disease has been documented to spread from cat to human. In a report published Thursday, Public Health England said it concluded TB samples taken from the cat and from two people in contact with the animal were “indistinguishable” and that the cat was considered to be “the likely source of infection.” Between December 2012 and last April, veterinarians identified TB in nine pet cats in Berkshire and Hampshire, west of London. Public Health England said the two people who caught TB were recovering and said the risk

How do they know the cat didn´t get the bacteria from the humans? Also, who are these people with TB? Immigrants, perchance?

If this news, along with all the other diseases cat bring, hastens the end of the pet cat, it will be a good thing.

Being a rat lover (we have two pet rats) and a retired medical researcher, I´m perversely fond of pointing out to people that, everything else being equal, they´re much more likely to catch a zoonotic disease from a cat than from a rat. And no, rats don not "carry" bubonic plague any more than humans do.

If you think people get hostile about politics .....you haven´t seen how ugly it can get when talking about choice of pets.

Here in Deep East Texas we have decided to kill all the feral cats and dogs and raise cows and bulls. They eat grass and .....you won´t believe this.....they turn it into beef.

It´s the coolest thing.

Get out of the city before Zippy´s sons burn it all down.

Come to Texas.

It´s a long time ago here.

C´mon, it´s more likely the cat caught it from the 2 humans - same for the "nine pet cats". There are so many humans who have TB, and more pouring into western countries without inspection. It´s worrisome that cats can now be a vector and reservoir though.

Trust Time to print only the anti-feline bits.

In the Daily Mail report:

1. Mycobacterium bovis is the type of TB found in cattle and wildlife--it is NOT confined to cats.

2. "PHE [Public Health England] said there have been no further cases of TB in cats reported . . . since March 2013." Also: "It’s important to remember that this was a very unusual cluster of TB in domestic cats."

#2, cats have been part of my life for close to 65 years; my son´s life for 45 years; and Mr A´s for about 30 years. Cats have had indoor status in my home for about 50 years. Apart from bacterial infection from a bite (which was not unexpected since I did cat rescue for many years), none of us has contracted an infection from a cat, domesticated or feral. I have, however, had innumerable infections from humans, including scarlet fever and many childhood diseases (in the days before antibiotics were available).

It´s a pity ignorance and bias render you so hostile to cats, #2. If you had ever lived with a cat, as Churchill did, you might think differently. Did you know that bubonic plague spread like wildfire when medieval populations destroyed cats and dogs, believing it was they who spread the plague? It was, in fact, the fleas found mainly on rodents that carried the Black Death. If we removed all cats we would be overrun by rats and mice in no time. Not to mention large southern cockroaches.

Should you have an influx of stray cats where you live, remember that the fault lies in their irresponsible former owners, not the cats. Call a cat rescue organization to rescue them.

A few years back, one of the local communities tried to pass an ordinance that all cats and dogs had to be spayed and neutered by 12 weeks. I am sure you can reach the logical conclusion of such legislation. Fortunately it failed because of public outcry. What regulations are being passed in your community?

Sorry for another post but further thoughts occur, e.g., that there are far more deaths from dog attacks (specifically bred for bull-baiting for hundreds of years) than from TB contracted from a cat.

Anyone who´s watched the "All Creatures Great and Small" series (see it on YouTube) or read James Herriot´s books, knows that vets sixty or so years ago are depicted as frequently out in the field, very carefully checking herds of cattle for TB. Are herds still checked as carefully? Does the milk container still say something like "TB tested!"? How did TB "escape"?

I first noticed the beginnings of what seemed to be an anti-cat campaign about 10 or 15 years ago. It started with warnings about toxoplasmosis being transmitted to humans from oocytes in litter boxes. Well, it could happen--but only if you don´t follow simple hygiene practices when cleaning out a litter box (wash your hands!). And cats aren´t the only transmitters of toxo. We have the "wild bird massacres" attributed to cats every so often. Now it´s TB. I suspect it has something to do with cats being perceived as not being useful animals, like the yellow labs liberals seem to prefer over all other pets, thus they shouldn´t use up "precious natural resources." Maybe they emit too much methane and should be lumped with cattle as being GW contributors as well.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel quietly notified Congress last week that the military is set to transfer six Guantanamo Bay prisoners to Uruguay as soon as next month, The New York Times revealed Wednesday. The deal has been waiting for Mr. Hagel’s approval since March, but stalled after the Obama administration received a wave of backlash for releasing five Taliban detainees to Qatar in exchange for the release Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. The administration did not give Congress 30-days notice in that deal, but argued it was still legal because any delay could have risked Sgt. Bergdahl’s life. A federal judge in Southern California ruled Wednesday that California’s death penalty was unconstitutional. The “dysfunctional administration of California’s death penalty system,” wrote Judge Cormac J. The delays, the judge wrote, means that sentences are carried out against only “a trivial few of those sentenced to death.” In essence, he wrote, sentences by juries have been transformed to “life in prison, with the remote possibility of death.” In making his ruling, Judge Carney vacated the death sentence of

Obama in his own different way is heading towards Nixon-like levels of weirdness, as, beaten down by the failures regarding his ventures, he appears to have quit his own job. A.B. Stoddard of the Hill says in effect he has stopped being president and chooses to live in a world of his own, shutting out the problems that have become overwhelming, giving dinners where he talks
