Obama, Pope Francis
meet for first time

CNN, by Halimah Abdullah

U.S. President Barack Obama and Pope Francis met Thursday for the first time at Vatican City, offering a chance for a reset of sorts between the administration and Catholic leadership following years of strained relations. The two world leaders greeted each other with a smile and a handshake, and posed for pictures before sitting down across a table from each other. The goal of the meeting: Focus on areas where two of the world´s most influential men agree and gently tread ground where they differ. The President and the Pontiff will, as the White House said in a statement, focus on "shared commitment

Did Pope Francis shout "Out, Satan!" ?
I hope he at least sprinkled Obama with holy water to see if he hissed and was burned.

Two enemies of capitalism, now united in friendship, talking about what further damage they can do to this world. Neither one focusing on the lessons Christ taught.

Why spend time talk about matters that they already agree on?

I don´t believe that the Pope is going to "reset" longstanding church doctrine to agree with Obama´s political policies. In three years Obama will be out of power and the church with it´s doctrines will still be there.

That immigration -- and not baby killing -- is the agenda makes this meeting another whitewash for the black kid preesy.

At least they will agree that Marx got the economics part right. Maybe they should get the Dalai Lama in there, too, and have an "economic inequality" summit of religious leaders (Barack Hussein being an object of worship).

Just as I figured. There are certain people like celebrities, Presidents, very wealthy that can bypass the Catholic doctrines and all is okay.

But an average couple in the 70´s divorces and they are ex-communicated from the church. Geez, you really think these two individuals hold any weight with me? Obama´s views on abortion should be a clue.

I am not Catholic. Christians are under serious attack around the world by fanatical Muslims, literally being killed, raped, burned, etc. Although I doubt this was discussed by the two of them. No, let´s discuss poverty and what can be done about it; like attacking those who have worked hard to be successful, etc. Sorry, but poverty has always been with us and always will be.

From Vatican website:

In the context of bilateral relations and cooperation between Church and State, there was a discussion on questions of particular relevance for the Church in that country, such as the exercise of the rights to religious freedom, life and conscientious objection, as well as the issue of immigration reform. Finally, the common commitment to the eradication of trafficking of human persons in the world was stated.

#11: Obama is not a Catholic. He doesn´t have to follow any Catholic church teachings!!

You should not comment when you no knowledge of what excommunication is and what happens to Catholics who obtain a civil divorce.

Excommunication is to be denied Communion in the church (and for priests and deacons to be denied to take part in ministry). Usually, the person excommunicates themselves by serious sin and living outside church doctrine and dogma. The person is still considered Catholic and the church is always open to repentance and forgiveness.

No Catholic person who divorces has ever been considered excommunicated. You are badly informed. The church recognizes that a legal divorce in a failed marriage is often necessary for property, inheritance, and support rights.

Catholics who remarry in a non-Catholic ceremony excommunicate themselves and cannot/should not receive communion until or if they can resolve their failed marriage in the Church. The church can do this after rigorous interviews to try to determine if the marriage was never sacramental because of the lack of discretion of intent of one or both of the parties in a failed marriage.

Pope: Barry, before I was voted in to be Pope, I was Chief Propagandist for the Church, like you, I was an organizer, telling the entire Catholic world to immigrate,
Indoctrinating all peasants with these simple words, "There are no borders!" For years, I told them to go where they pleased and that the Church would provide them with Sanctuary wherever they went. We even built them a giant marble temple in Los Angeles to show we can handle millions of the incoming alien masses. And you, Barry, you have been more supportive of this mass invasion than any previous president, even more than Bill Clinton. You are truly a brother to the Church! You have also been as brutal to non Catholics as any of our strongest priests going all the way back to the days of the Inquisition. I am proud of you.

Barry: thanks, Pope, couldn´t have done it without your support and the backing of all Catholic democrats in DC.

I briefly saw the clip on Fox of Obama as he sat down before the Pope. He looked extremely uncomfortable and like an adolescent who was about to be reprimanded. He looked skinny, small and weak. He´s not having a very good week. How sad for our country that this what we´re stuck with for three more years. He´s a disgrace and a national and worldwide embarrassment. #16 – Thank you for expanding on the coverage of topics discussed between Pope Francis and zippy that was ignored by CNN. I’m a bit disappointed that some posters would rely on CNN’s reporting as presenting a complete picture. We have no idea what the Holy Father actually said despite the fevered imaginings of those with an obvious ax to grind against Catholicism. I believe it was G.K. Chesterton or C.S. Lewis who said, “Its not that people disagree with the teachings of the Catholic Church so much as they disagree with what they think the Church teaches.”

#18 - An excellent explanation of the Catholic teaching on divorce. Marriage is not a mere social institution, it is a holy union instituted by God. Jesus’ words, “What God has joined together, let man not separate,” are clear. Christ also taught that if a man puts aside his wife and takes another he commits adultery. Catholic doctrines guard and protect marriage as the basic building block of society and are based upon Christ’s own words. However, the Church also recognizes that we are a fallen people in a fallen world, and in her mercy she has instituted a process in which the sacramentality of a previous marriage can be annulled to allow people to re-enter into full communion.

The Catholic Church has held the line in defense of marriage and the family against divorce, contraception, abortion, the taking casual sexual partners, and gender-neutral pairings that other Christian denominations have accepted as “necessary evils” so as to not offend modern society’s “sensibilities”. Every day Ldotters bemoan the state of our culture and the societal problems that stem from the socialist deconstruction of God’s plan for mankind, yet are quick to criticize the Catholic Church for defending that plan.

#33 – In all fairness, your original post listed “Presidents” and considering the topic, it was naturally taken you were inferring that Obama is subject to Catholic doctrine. Thank you for your second post correcting the misinterpretation. At the risk of making another error, to answer your second question I’ll assume you are referencing Pelosi, Biden, and Sebilius.

Yes, it is a scandal that these purported Catholic politicians publicly defend the horrific practice of abortion. You may not be aware of the articles reporting that each of these officials were called into private meetings with their respective bishops for pastoral counseling. Since these are private we have no knowledge of any religious sanctions that may or may not have been placed upon these individuals.

There is a great deal of difference between public and private actions, and while we would hope a Catholic public figure would defend Church teaching it is not a sin for them not to do so. The First Amendment prohibits the establishment of a state religion whereby public figures would be subject to religious tests in order to hold office, and this also restricts established religions from interfering with an official’s public comments. Due to the historical anti-Catholic sentiments in America, JFK was compelled to publicly declare that his religion would be held separate from his public duties so as not to be accused of “taking orders from the Pope.” (We will set aside discussion of his private sins.) Subsequent Catholic politicians have taken this precedent as a license to embrace all manner of modern societal evils under the umbrella that they represent all people of all religions or no faith at all. However, this has no impact on the personal sins of individuals and Church sanctions for their private actions.

#36 Thanks for your excellent response to #33 on the problems of politician who are Catholic living in non-Catholic countries that have laws contrary to Catholic teachings.

#33 The pope is the head of state of Vatican City. As a head of state, he meets with other heads of state and officials of other countries in the world. The United States has diplomatic relations with the Holy See. So it would be surprising if they did not meet.

Ordinary Catholics are treated no different from "visible" leaders who are Catholics. Visible leaders are treated much harsher sometimes because of issue of presenting scandal to the world either from their actions, what they have said, or usually what people "think" they have said from wild interpretations in the news media.

I laugh at the people on here who proclaim the pope is a socialist or Marxist. Pope Francis fought against liberation theology in his own Jesuit order. (Liberation Theology was/is an attempt to combine socialism with Catholic Theology.) He fought so hard that his order banished him to a remote outpost in Northern Argentina to teach. JPII said I need a coadjutor bishop to assist in Buenos Aries. Where is Msgr. Bergoglio? (Told he was banished, JPII said: I know all about his valiant attempts against Liberation Theology in the Jesuits in Argentina.) Get him down to Buenos Aries to be the coadjutor and that will put him in line to be the next Archbishop of Buenos Aries. The media would have you believe he is a socialist. He is as socialist as Jesus. He believes in moral sharing of wealth by the individual not being commanded by the state.

Stewart briefly discussed the 656-page tome about Clinton´s tenure as secretary of state and then asked exactly what everyone is wondering. "No one cares," about the book, he said. The event, which was organized by Jewish City Council members,

Bill Ayers’ recent appearance on Megyn Kelly’s Fox News program appears to be part of a systematic campaign to whitewash the activities of the communist terrorists who were murdering policemen and FBI agents during the 1960s and 70s, and to set the stage for their release and rehabilitation. Kelly was unprepared for the interview and failed to consult prominent experts on the case, such as former FBI agent Max Noel. “I’m extremely disappointed, as are a number of us who actually worked the WUO [Weather Underground Organization] case on a daily basis, in your attempt to ‘confront him’ without availing yourself

The U.S. deported Honduran children as young as 1-1/2 years old on Monday in the first flight since President Obama pledged to speed up the process of sending back illegal immigrant minors from Central America. Fleeing violence and poverty, record numbers of children from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala have crossed into the United States over the past year, sparking intense debate about how to solve the problem. Monday´s flight from New Mexico to San Pedro Sula, the city with the highest murder rate in the world, returned 17 Honduran women, as well as 12 girls and nine boys, aged

The Obama administration quietly announced on Tuesday that it intends to change the way Americans learn about natural disasters and other major emergencies during radio and TV broadcasts, giving the president the ability to flip a switch and address the entire nation at once. The Emergency Alert System, the latest version of a program first established in 1951, blasts out emergency messages in the event of local weather emergencies, but can also be used to warn Americans about terror attacks and major natural disasters. [Snip] It can take up to 10 minutes for every radio, TV, cable and satellite provider to

In his message to the “Mexico/Holy See Colloquium on Migration and Development,” Pope Francis characterized the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants that have crossed the U.S. southern border as a product of globalization, suggesting that the phenomenon is happening worldwide. Francis proclaimed, “Despite the large influx of migrants present in all continents and in almost all countries, migration is still seen as an emergency, or as a circumstantial and sporadic fact, while instead it has now become a hallmark of our society and a challenge.” Emmer McCarthy for Vatican Radio said Francis expressed his concern for “the tens of thousands of

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security. John McCain, an immigration hawk. Who knew? Mr. McCain, the highest-profile Republican of the U.S. Senate’s “Gang of Eight” that came up with amnesty as the solution to the immigration crisis — and it truly is a crisis — is finally taking a hard line against President Obama for his encouraging the tidal wave of illegal aliens swamping the southwestern border. “There has to be a halt to this,” Mr. McCain thundered Sunday on CNN. “That’s what we want, and the best way to do that is for planeloads of these young people to be returning to their country of origin

Contrary to what those who defend the right to own high-powered assault rifles believe, not all guns are created equal. Due to a combination of availability, portability and criminal usage the following five types of guns are the country's most dangerous. School Shootings: Widely Reported Tragedies Since 2000 - Using firearm trace data from the ATF, as well as FBI homicide records, we determined the types of guns most often recovered from crime scenes and/or used in murders. The numbers are stark: According to the FBI's 2012 Crime in the US data, nearly 70 percent of homicides for which the FBI received weapons data involved the use

It had to come sometime, and it came in one very bad week for the Democrats: that the many big problems with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama finally grew too great for the press to ignore. Obama in his own different way is heading towards Nixon-like levels of weirdness, as, beaten down by the failures regarding his ventures, he appears to have quit his own job. A.B. Stoddard of the Hill says in effect he has stopped being president and chooses to live in a world of his own, shutting out the problems that have become overwhelming, giving dinners where he talks

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has warned all of his colleagues in Congress that President Barack Obama’s new immigration strategy—his plans to legalize millions of illegal alien adults through executive power—could destroy America as we know it. “I write to inform you of a development that threatens the foundation of our constitutional Republic,” Sessions, Congress’s top immigration hawk, wrote in a letter that was hand-delivered to all 535 members of Congress on Monday and provided exclusively to Breitbart News. Sessions cites a recent report from the National Journal, in which reporter Major Garrett detailed how, despite the ongoing

Attorney General Eric Holder encouraged Americans not to forget race while working for justice and equality in their country. “As it stands, our society is not yet color blind -- nor should it be -- given the disparities that still afflict and divide us.” Holder explained, “We must be color brave, and we must never forget that all are made better and more prosperous if all are given equal opportunities.” Holder made his remarks during a speech at Howard University on Tuesday for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Civil Rights Act. “We must take into account not only the

WASHINGTON — It was an enduring image of his presidency: a chastened Bill Clinton walking his dog while wife Hillary keeps her distance as the family leaves town at the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal — but it was all part of a contrived public-repentance campaign, according to a new book. With Bill on the skids and his wife’s future prospects on the line, it was necessary for the pubic to see the president being punished, said Weekly Standard online editor Daniel Halper in his new book, “Clinton, Inc.: The Audacious Rebuilding of a Political Machine.” “They understood that
