The New Republican Reformers
Wall Street Journal, by Karl Rove

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 3/27/2014 7:56:35 AM

Their target is the GOP, but they are not angry liberals bent on destroying it. They are reform-minded Republican leaders intent on strengthening it. These Republicans are applying conservative principles to 21st-century challenges, focused on middle-class concerns like lowering costs and improving access to college, modernizing health care and reforming the tax code. They aim to broaden prosperity´s reach through markets and merit, not government and corporate cronyism. They´re also concentrating on helping the poor by changing Washington´s dizzying assortment of antipoverty programs to emphasize work and make the safety net more effective and sustainable. The reformers´ success in providing

Unfortunately for Congressman Ryan, the most recent proof of his conservative principles was his budget, which is not at all conservative. You can talk about conservative principles all you want, but when your actions betray your words people tend not to believe you.
I could say the same for Governor Kasich, and Governor Christie.

Ryan reformed the budget by reducing veterans benefits and ending the sequester. Rubio worked with Democrats to reform immigration by legalizing the illegals. Bush can´t wait to reform education (Common Core) and immigration (legalization). He also gave Hillary Clinton a medal on the eve of the anniversary of Benghazi.

For the author to compare the political talents of Bush One and Bush Two, two men whose political legacies were Bill Clinton and Barack Obama respectively, with those of Ronald Reagan, whose political legacy was Bush One, is an indication of how intellectually dishonest this man really is. Further proof: Who´s missing from this list?

Karl Rove is not about reform. He´s about securing funding for his GOP incumbency protection racket.

I realize getting past the fact that Karl Rove is the author is difficult. But he does highlight some important points and campaign themes for this fall. ´94 is always remembered for the contract for america, but the conservative-libertarian themes that drove that document began with the governors. Republicans and conservatives will never have an opportunity to implement an agenda if we don´t push ideas.

Karl trying to get his foot back in the door.

Notice the closing statement "The importance of winning and governing well should focus more Republicans on this movement´s work.".

The problem is, with Karl, it´s all about the winning. But with candidates that have squishy conservative principles and no backbone, winning doesn´t mean too much. The governing fails because of weak candidates.

I would say it´s about the "importance of winning WITH candidates that have strong conservative principles and the strength of character to follow them". Then the governing works itself out automatically.

Karl is willing to get anyone elected who says they are GOP. Conservatives would like to pick solid candidates first.

Ok, I read the article. I don´t think many on this thread did so. What is it about the various state and federal efforts that Mr. Rove discusses that upsets some posters? None of it is about immigration, most of it is about consolidating duplicative programs and streamlining others. In addition to Ryan, there is reference to Mike Lee, Marco Rubio, Bobby Jindal, Rick Snyder, John Kasich, Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Scott Walker and non-office holders James Capretta, Yuval Levin, Avik Roy, Arthur Brooks and I´m sure I´ve missed a few.

If you read the article and have objections to the various ideas, that´s one thing, but I´m dismayed, as is #6, at the clearly uninformed comments.

No one would be talking about Karl Rove if Rupert Murdoch didn´t keep hiring him. Rove guaranteed radical left democrat wins in 2006, 2008 and 2012. He´s loved by the greatest forces of hate in this country, the NY Times and the democrat party. They love Rove because he guarantees Democrat wins. His so-called big donors all favor radical left policies anyway as does his boss Rupert Murdoch so the whole thing is a charade. Murdoch hires Bush crowd hacks to cut off at the pass any chance for the grassroots to break the UniParty. As long as the UniParty exists ordinary citizens can´t effect change.

Let me lay it out for all you establishment types: Karl Rove is the "architect" of Republican losses. He is the backer of liberal Republicans and reaching across the aisle and bending over and taking it up the wazoo. So, even if he took an excellent article written by, say, Ted Cruz, and put his name on it, I would still not trust him. He can put forth conservative ideas but I will never believe that he believes them. Conservatives believe in Constitutionally LIMITED government; Karl Rove DOES NOT. Conservatives believe in the Rule of Law; Karl Rove DOES NOT. Conservatives believe in INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY; Karl Rove DOES NOT. Karl Rove has spent his entire life worshipping at the alter of BIG GOVERNMENT. His influence and his economic well-being derives from BIG GOVERNMENT. He BELIEVES in BIG GOVERNEMTN. Karl Rove is entirely a creature of BIG GOVERNMENT.

So, yes; I have read the article and found much to like about it. But I do not for one second believe that Karl Rove means any of it. He is the kind of Republican that will do anything to "win" an election, including pretending to be conservatives. But we know what these Republicans do once they win: They govern in a way indistinguishable from Leftist Communist Demonrats.

No. Now and forever: NO!

Reform is difficult anytime, but much harder when the GOP only controls one house of Congress.

Con. Ryan would propose a much different budget if he had control of the Senate and the White House. Yet he understands that the ruling party of the house should try to GOVERN in addition.

Similarly, it should not come as a surprise that major reform is coming from the states who have the power to do so.

Even in the states, there are limits to what one can do. Gov Christie would do a lot more if he had a GOP legislature too.

some things are bedrock and non-negotiable and no substitutions will work.
Trust is one of those.
None of us trust Rove. None of us, reasonably, can do so.
None of us can trust the "wiser heads" in the upper crust of the RNC. None of us, reasonably, can do so.
They squandered what little trust that had been accumulated over time, generally by Reagan. The one that these same "wiser heads" furiously opposed before and during his presidency. That trust is gone, probably forever.
Rove can say whatever he wants. I´m not interested in listening to liars nor to those with an unbroken record of damage tot he country.

Federal employees, like all Americans, are entitled to hold passionate political beliefs. Most executive branch federal employees, however, may not engage in certain political activities, thanks to an anti-conflict of interest principle enshrined in a federal law called the Hatch Act. To wit, President Bush requested the resignation of his GSA administrator in 2008 after the US Office of Special Counsel determined she had violated federal law by participating in a video conference with Karl Rove and sending out partisan letters. How would you feel if someone promised to give you a car, and then reneged on that pledge? That’s how all Americans should feel when it comes to ObamaCare -- because Barack Obama’s failed and discredited campaign promise to lower health insurance premiums has cost the average American family an amount equal to the price of many new cars. During his 2008 campaign, one of then-Senator Obama’s most audacious promises was that his health plan would reduce premiums by $2,500 for the average family. It had to come sometime, and it came in one very bad week for the Democrats: that the many big problems with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama finally grew too great for the press to ignore. Obama in his own different way is heading towards Nixon-like levels of weirdness, as, beaten down by the failures regarding his ventures, he appears to have quit his own job. A.B. Stoddard of the Hill says in effect he has stopped being president and chooses to live in a world of his own, shutting out the problems that have become overwhelming, giving dinners where he talks
