Berlin - Air France says a plane carrying 495 passengers and 22 crew was diverted on its way from Shanghai to Paris after Russia announced at short notice that part of its airspace was closed for a military exercise. The company said flight AF111 was forced to land in Hamburg, Germany, early Wednesday to refuel because the plane had too little fuel on board to complete the flight following its detour. Hamburg Airport confirmed that the plane landed shortly after 6 a.m. (0500 GMT) and was able to take off for Paris again after an hour and a half. It wasn't immediately clear if Russia's military exercise was linked to the increased troop activity on its

Comments:
Putin is certainly playing hardball with 0bama when he is allowed to divert a full plane at the last moment from Russia´s airspace. By seeing current flight path, one can see the danger.

Putin will probably seize more of eastern Ukraine by the weekend. It´s what weak regional powers do when they are not calibrating targets in the US for their 2,000+ nuclear weapons.

More than 60 women and girls abducted in April by suspected Boko Haram militants in northeast Nigeria have escaped their captors, sources have told the AFP new agency. Local vigilante Abbas Gava said he had “received an alert from my colleagues ... that about 63 of the abducted women and girls had made it back home.” A high-level security source in the Borno state capital Maiduguri, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, confirmed the escape. Gava, a senior official of the local vigilantes in Borno State who are working closely with security officials, told journalists the women escaped when their

The al Qaeda offshoot terrorist group conquering parts of Iraq is gaining strength thanks to prisoner releases and its social media magnetism for foreign fighter recruits. As its ranks grow, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, sometimes called the Islamic State, has become the first terrorist organization to plan and execute a two-front land war, presenting yet another challenge to the United States in its long war against Islamic extremists. Last week, ISIL showed it could capture towns and territory in Syria and Iraq at once. Al Qaeda and its franchises have not accomplished such a feat. ISIL has demonstrated that it is an organized

Lawyers for Guantanamo Bay detainees have filed motions asking U.S. courts to stop officials from barring the inmates from participating in communal prayers during Ramadan, claiming their rights are protected under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and citing the recent Supreme Court Hobby Lobby ruling in their defense, reports Al Jazeera America. U.K.-based human rights group Reprieve filed the motions on behalf of Emad Hassan of Yemen and Ahmed Rabbani of Pakistan, whom the group says requested the intervention after Guantanamo Bay military officials, “prevented them from praying communally during

Ramadan began in Moscow on June 28, as it did throughout the Arab world. When that period of fasting ends one month later, tens of thousands of believers will gather at each of the capital city´s four mosques. The structures cannot hold so many of the faithful, and, as always, the mass of worshippers spills over and fills the side streets. Such a scene might sound more typical of Cairo or Tehran, but it is just one face of the rapidly changing capital. Muscovites nervously joke that the city will soon turn into the Islamic metropolis of Moskvabad, (Snip) Russia is a Muslim land — an estimated 10 million to 15 million Muslims live here,

Sen. John McCain would be "proud" to work with a President Hillary Clinton, the Arizona Republican said Sunday on "Face the Nation" - that is, he added, if she "regrettably" makes it into the White House. Last month, Clinton on "Good Morning America" called McCain, whom she faced in a bid for the Oval Office in 2008, her favorite Republican. Asked whether he reciprocates the sentiment about the former first lady, (Snip) "I respect Secretary/Senator Clinton; I respect her views," he said. "We have had disagreements on a number of issues. Cairo - Egypt´s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on Sunday a referendum on the independence of Iraq´s Kurdish region would lead to a "catastrophic" break up of the country, which is facing an onslaught by Sunni Islamist militants. The comments from Sisi, leader of the most populous Arab nation, indicate a growing fear in the region that the division of Iraq could further empower the insurgents who have declared a "caliphate" on land seized in Iraq and neighboring Syria. "The referendum that the Kurds are asking for now is in reality no more than the start of a catastrophic division of Iraq into smaller rival states,"

The unanimous decision of the Supreme Court late last month that President Obama violated the separation of powers in appointing officials is the type of decision that usually concentrates the mind of a chief executive. Obama, however, appeared to double down on his strategy — stating in a Rose Garden speech on Tuesday that he intended to expand, not reduce, his use of unilateral actions to circumvent Congress. Summing up his position, the President threw down the gauntlet at Congress: “So sue me.” (Snip) The renewed promise to go it alone is a familiar refrain from this President. The American CNN TV channel has revealed a shocking lack of geographical knowledge. A CNN report about self-defense fighters´ pullout from the towns of Slavyansk and Kramatorsk in southeastern Ukraine carried a map locating Slavyansk in the western part of Crimea. Covering Ukrainian troops´ seizure of Slavyansk and Kramatorsk, both situating in Ukraine´s southeast Donetsk region, the CNN mislocated Slavyansk, "moving" it to Crimea which has recently become part of Russia. Similar blunders echo the latest remark by Stephen Colbert, the host of the popular Colbert Report satirical show, who said, citing a Washington Post poll,

The Obamas have spent over 44 million dollars in taxpayer money on travel and vacations. Some are even calling him the “most well-trvaeled, expensive” president in our nation’s history. As Americans head off for the long holiday weekend, let’s take a look back at some of the president’s holiday spending. Our president vacations a lot — we’re talking $44,351,777.12 worth of “a lot,” with most expenses charged to the American taxpayer. As of March 2014, Obama has spent more time traveling internationally than any other president, taking 31 trips since assuming office in 2009. The 119 days spent overseas have

President Obama has quietly promised Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren complete support if she runs for president — a stinging rebuke to his nemesis Hillary Clinton, sources tell me. Publicly, Obama has remained noncommittal on the 2016 race, but privately he worries that Clinton would undo and undermine many of his policies. There’s also a personal animosity, especially with Bill Clinton, that dates from their tough race six years ago. A former Harvard law professor and administration aide, Warren would energize the left wing of the Democrat Party just as Obama did against Clinton in 2008.
