Kirk to "protect" Durbin relationship,
not stump for Oberweis

Chicago Sun-Times, by Lynn Sweet

Original Article

Posted By:AltaD, 3/25/2014 11:20:38 AM

Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., is ruling out campaigning for longshot GOP Illinois U.S. Senate nominee Jim Oberweis, saying Monday he would rather “protect” his relationship with Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and not launch a “partisan jihad.” Kirk and Durbin are a very rare couple in Washington. They get along, even when they disagree.(Snip)Durbin aside, it helps Kirk, a social moderate, who supports gay marriage, abortion rights and comprehensive immigration reform, to disassociate himself from Oberweis, who is opposite him on the very issues that may appeal to the swing independent suburban voters, especially suburban women who Kirk has cultivated throughout

Comments:
If Kirk had any honor he would officially switch parties.

The contrast of Sen. Kirk with Sen. Cruz is startling.

Cruz did not endorse Cornyn, the senior senator from Texas, in the GOP primary race as more conservatives were running against him.

Yet immediately after he won the primary, Cruz endorsed him enthusiastically.

When it comes to politics, Oberweis is a loser! Sadly, he won the primary.

He will probably drag the ticket down. Many people point to the tradition of Senators not getting involved in such matters. Others point to the way Durbin and his staff assisted Kirk when he was initially recovering from his stroke.

I point to the fact that no one wants to be associated with Oberweis. I wish Kirk was not so seemingly supportive of Durbin, but I understand why he is not siding with Oberwies. I doubt Rauner will be seen with Oberweis either.

Oberweis is better candidate than anyone else who has run against Durbin in recent memory. He has money and can probably raise some, too. Kirk is a RINO traitor. But who needs his help? He is not exactly a well-known or respected figure in Illinois. I have little hope that Durbin can be unseated, but you never know.

The shootings include an incident in which police shot and killed a suspected gang member in Portage Park and an incident in West Englewood in which suburban teenagers riding in a car may have been mistaken as gang members. Chicago to ask for temporary halt of

Chicago is calling for a six-month moratorium on conversions of single-room occupancy hotels and residential hotels while it tries to figures out how to regulate the gentrification that has put thousands of very-low-income housing units at risk. An ordinance that would prohibit for six months the issuance of any city building permits for the demolition or conversion of the buildings is expected to be introduced at Wednesday’s City Council meeting by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and several aldermen. The moratorium would prevent almost all conversion projects, whether it was to a residential, non-residential, commercial or industrial use.

Former Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner writes in his memoir, released Monday, that Illinois Republican Mark Kirk was “delusional” in warning the Chinese not to buy U.S. debt — but a source who was actually at that meeting Kirk had with Chinese officials told me that Geithner, who was not present, got it wrong. Kirk’s long-held view is that Geithner — along with a host of administration officials up to President Barack Obama and many members of Congress — is crazy not to be more concerned about runaway U.S. spending. So when it comes to who is delusional, Kirk’s not worried about

The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. “Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security.
