In a fascinating interview with Charlie Rose, David Brooks–who is now teaching moral philosophy at Yale–spoke, among many other topics, about Viktor Frankl, the Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor. Dr. Frankl, in his book Man’s Search for Meaning, deals with the fact that he was living a life he didn’t plan for. Living in a concentration camp obviously isn’t what he hoped for. The crucial question became not what Frankl wanted out of life; it was what he would do with the hand he had been dealt.

Overseeing London Cleaners — and family —

For nearly 60 years, Kathy Dionesopulos presided over the London Cleaners, a bustling downtown institution where you could get a hat blocked, a bridal gown mended, a tablecloth repaired and, yes, dry cleaning done. But Dionesopulos brought something besides clothing care to the counter. She found out how that gown got torn, how that candle burned the tablecloth and so much more. "The counter that divided her from her customers really was like a bridge. She was learning things about her customers and turning them into friends. I think she fixed people´s lives in a lot of ways,"

Obama’s Staggering Record of Failure

In advance of President Obama’s four-nation Asian tour this week, the Washington Post published an article saying this: President Obama’s bid to focus U.S. attention on Asia has failed to meet the lofty expectations he set three years ago in a grand pronouncement that the new emphasis would become a pillar of his foreign policy. [Snip] By now, nearly five and a half years into the Obama presidency, objective people can draw reasonable conclusions, among which are these: Barack Obama was among the least prepared men to ever serve as presidency. It shows. He has been overmatched by events right from the start.

Little Chute — Noah Van Vooren waited by the mailbox every afternoon. They said the letter would come in April. So he waited. Even in the rain. Even when his sisters yelled at him to come inside. Noah, 19, had applied to college like many of his friends at Little Chute High School. Edgewood College in Madison hosts a special track for people like him, with Down syndrome or other intellectual and developmental disabilities. He wanted to be the first to know whether they'd take him. The news he got on April 5 has now been enjoyed by the half-million people who have watched the family video posted to YouTube.

The Health Insurance Answer

In this episode, a rare collision of the Haggler and the news. Our letter comes from a couple who have been trying for months to sign up for health insurance through Healthcare.gov, also known as the Obamacare website. And Monday, March 31, is the enrollment deadline, though the administration recently announced exemptions for people who had trouble signing up. [Snip] We have been told on successive calls that there is no logical explanation for this, and that our complaint will be “elevated” and “expedited.” I write this in mid-March. Mindy has had no health coverage since Jan. 1.

On April 1, the U.S. economy dropped a whopping 2.9 percent for the first three months of the year (no fooling). The American workforce participation rate fell to a 40-year low. One-third of people aged 18-29 have moved back in with their parents. Millions of Americans this summer will enjoy yet another “staycation”: They just can’t afford to go to the beach or the mountains, even for a week — again. (Snip) Forget that the United States is deep into what Mr. Obama dramatically declares a “humanitarian crisis,” that the Middle East is a powder keg about to blow, that Iraq has all but fallen to Islamist terrorists. (Why not forget; the president has.)

A Fox News exclusive reported this morning by Jana Winter inexplicably buried the lede. Winter reports that several dead children have been discovered “washed up along the riverbank” of the Rio Grande, but fails to note that there have been no reports by the Obama administration on this. This indicates a pattern of covering up dead illegal alien kids by the Obama administration. It was two weeks before news was reported on the sole child death acknowledged by the Obama administration, Gilberto Ramos, a 15 year-old boy from Guatemala whose body was found in the Texas brush dead from the

The U.S. deported Honduran children as young as 1-1/2 years old on Monday in the first flight since President Obama pledged to speed up the process of sending back illegal immigrant minors from Central America. Fleeing violence and poverty, record numbers of children from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala have crossed into the United States over the past year, sparking intense debate about how to solve the problem. Monday´s flight from New Mexico to San Pedro Sula, the city with the highest murder rate in the world, returned 17 Honduran women, as well as 12 girls and nine boys, aged

Professor Stephen Hawking is backing the academic boycott of Israel by pulling out of a conference hosted by Israeli president Shimon Peres in Jerusalem as a protest at Israel´s treatment of Palestinians. Hawking, 71, the world-renowned theoretical physicist and former Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, had accepted an invitation to headline the fifth annual president´s conference, Facing Tomorrow, in June, which features major international personalities, attracts thousands of participants and this year will celebrate Peres´s 90th birthday. Hawking is in very poor health, but last week he wrote a brief letter to the Israeli president to say he

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

Contrary to what those who defend the right to own high-powered assault rifles believe, not all guns are created equal. Due to a combination of availability, portability and criminal usage the following five types of guns are the country's most dangerous. School Shootings: Widely Reported Tragedies Since 2000 - Using firearm trace data from the ATF, as well as FBI homicide records, we determined the types of guns most often recovered from crime scenes and/or used in murders. The numbers are stark: According to the FBI's 2012 Crime in the US data, nearly 70 percent of homicides for which the FBI received weapons data involved the use

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has warned all of his colleagues in Congress that President Barack Obama’s new immigration strategy—his plans to legalize millions of illegal alien adults through executive power—could destroy America as we know it. “I write to inform you of a development that threatens the foundation of our constitutional Republic,” Sessions, Congress’s top immigration hawk, wrote in a letter that was hand-delivered to all 535 members of Congress on Monday and provided exclusively to Breitbart News. Sessions cites a recent report from the National Journal, in which reporter Major Garrett detailed how, despite the ongoing

Inquiring minds wonder if there’s a “G” in the grading repertoire. And that does not stand for “good.” Pollster John Zogby has given President Obama an “F” this week for the White House performance on the global stage, and the researcher has no imminent good news for the president. “Some people have really bad weeks. Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff got an ‘F’ after the nation’s soccer team lost to Germany. But President Obama’s week was just as bad,” Mr. Zogby says. “Israel and the Palestinians are at war again. The president should have visited the U.S.-Mexican border, where so many immigrant children are in danger and so many

On July 16, comic character Archie Andrews, of Life With Archie, will die after being shot while protecting gay friend Kevin Keller. Keller is "Archie Comics´ first openly gay character." According to the Associated Press, Keller is "a married military veteran and newly elected senator who´s pushing for more gun control in Riverdale after his husband was involved in a shooting." Archie Comics´ publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater said the way in which Archie will die was carefully chosen. While he could have been killed saving "Betty" or saving "Veronica," doing so for Keller was something "that would really resonate

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security. President Obama is known for being competitive on the basketball court, but he´s also apparently a cutthroat pool player. Gov. John Hickenlooper, D-Colo., told reporters at the National Governors Association meeting on Sunday that the president surprised him by beat him in two consecutive games. To add insult to injury, the two were playing at the Wynkoop Brewing Company, a bar that Hickenlooper co-founded. Impeachment: The Red Line

Where is the red line of impeachment? In theory, a red line might be located somewhere on a list of impeachable offenses – perhaps at the point where a certain number of transgressions is exceeded, or next to a specific instance because of its significance or impact. In reality, though, that red line exists along a spectrum of “political will.” As Andrew McCarthy explained: “You can have a thousand provable impeachable offenses, but before Congress may remove the president from power, there must be strong popular support – a public will that cuts across partisan and ideological lines.”
