Vatican’s secret, and deadly,
project to preserve its saints

New York Post, by Theresa Potenza

Inspired by Ancient Egypt, the Vatican embarked on a 40-year quest to preserve the remains of its holy adherents — including one of its latest saints, Pope John XXIII The spiritual making of a saint is rooted in law, bureaucracy and, of course, faith. The physical making of a saint is something else entirely. On April 27, popes John XXIII and John Paul II will be granted sainthood by Pope Francis. It will be a day to honor two of the Catholic Church’s most popular leaders, the “Good Pope” who served only five years, and the superstar who toured the

It´s ghoulish how, in ancient days, the bodies of the venerated were hacked apart and pieces saved as relics. IMO, it´s one of the things non-believers, and non-Catholics, have a difficult time looking beyond when relating to Catholics. I love them as fellow Christians, but fear it´s a barrier when reaching out to those outside the faith.

Not to criticize the Catholic Church, it just seems to me that if Christianity is only about the preservation of corpses, it is pretty empty, as was posted above. But it is not about that at all! It is the belief that God cares so much for a fallen sinful race called humanity, that He chose to suffer our punishment for us, to redeem us from the hell that we each deserve for our lies, thefts, murders, and so many other wicked acts and choices. It isn´t about preserving this body, for He can easily make new and improved ones, but in lifting up the souls and spirits of his lost children. To borrow from a cartoon, "That, Charlie Brown, is what Easter is about."

My Bible, in Hebrews, says all those who are saved are priests and saints. The Catholic practice of making people into Saints to be venerated and prayed to is not scriptural.

#4 - that´s where non-Catholics have a problem. The Church existed several hundred years before it compiled the books we now know as the Bible. The Bible didn´t just appear from thin air.

Prior to the Church´s compilation of these books, there were about 300 years worth of teachings of the Church Fathers and other oral Christian Tradition.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say it is the sole source of the faith. In fact, John says just the opposite - and many of those "other things" were passed along in our oral tradition.

John 21:25:

But there are also many other things which Jesus did; which, if they were written every one, the world itself, I think, would not be able to contain the books that should be written.

If you need more information - consult a Catholic encyclopedia.

If you depart from Scripture as the sole authority, all bets are off, so to speak. Scripture existed before it was made official.
I think tradition is fine in terms of worship services, vestments and other things that are not in scripture but are appropriately decided by mortal man. And this is not a Catholic vs. Protestant thing, necessarily. In many respects the Catholic Church adheres more to scripture than many Protestant churches, which have such non-scriptural things as women ministers and gay clergy, and which advocate or condone non-scriptural things such as abortion, sex outside of marriage, homosexual relations and same sex marriage.

There are many incorruptible bodies remaining whole for centuries, long past the normal decomposition. I do not find it unacceptable that the Church should try modern methods to preserve those bodies that are experiencing decay. The early Christians celebrated Mass (The Lord’s Supper) within the tombs of their dead because they could not worship publicly. The practice of keeping relics from the bodies of sainted persons, most imbedded within altars or in the worship space, comes from our times in the catacombs. The Church no longer sanctions private ownership of relics, and relics cannot be bought or sold.

The Catholic Church teaches that every soul entering Heaven is a saint, whether or not they are recognized as such in this physical life. The formal practice of canonization of an obviously holy person is to elevate those lives as examples for the faithful. Most canonized saints are also patrons of professions, vocations, and special needs. Catholics do not worship the saints, worship is exclusively for God, but we do venerate the saints as holy persons worthy of our respect.

The doctrine of the Communion of Saints is threefold: the Church Militant (those of us still living earthly lives), the Church Suffering (those souls expiating their sins in Purgatory), and the Church Triumphant (all souls in Heaven). Just as Christians will readily ask others to pray for them during a time of illness or crisis, the Church Militant can ask the saints in Heaven to pray for them and their causes. The saints in Heaven continue to live and pray and work for the Church Militant and the Church Suffering. We on earth are also called to pray for the souls in Purgatory as do the saints. Life is eternal and we all pray for each other.

#5, #7, #8, #9....wise words

Remember, when Paul talks about Scripture, he is referring to the OT. The gospels, letters, Acts, and Revelation had not been approved, sorted from the other, non-inspired writings, and put together in a book by the (Catholic) Church at that point.

I grew up in the Church of Christ, the fundamentalist, conservative, non-denominational church. We were taught to know the NT by heart and could quote it extensively, and that if it wasn´t in the NT, then it didn´t count, period.
We were also taught that after NT times, the church basically disappeared until it popped up in the late 1800s called, thank goodness!, The Church of Christ. THE CHURCH. The only church. The assumption being that tiny pockets of true Christians survived through the centuries, invisible and not documented in any way, until the Church of Christ popped up and "restored" Christ´s Church, referring to the Apostasy in the Bible and the restoration. So I know where you all who are suspicious of the Roman Catholic Church are coming from, I used to think the same thing.

There are a lot of good things in the church I grew up in, and all the other churches. But there is a fullness of faith in the Catholic Church founded by Jesus, who handed the keys to Peter. Go to EWTN online and watch The Journey Home. Read Scott Hahn if you dare, and other Protestant ministers´ conversions. Their apple carts were upset (as was mine) so watch out! "To be steeped in history (including the Bible) is to cease to be Protestant."

Having said that, Protestants have written MANY sacred and beautiful hymns and have rightly corrected the Church on important issues, and there are many who choose to stay in that tradition. God can work through any church and any person.

Federal employees, like all Americans, are entitled to hold passionate political beliefs. Most executive branch federal employees, however, may not engage in certain political activities, thanks to an anti-conflict of interest principle enshrined in a federal law called the Hatch Act. To wit, President Bush requested the resignation of his GSA administrator in 2008 after the US Office of Special Counsel determined she had violated federal law by participating in a video conference with Karl Rove and sending out partisan letters. Seventeen percent of people in the United States say immigration is the nation’s top problem, according to a Gallup poll released Wednesday. That´s up from 5 percent in June, and is the highest number Gallup has registered for immigration since 2006, when 15 percent said it was the nation´s most pressing problem. Gallup’s new survey found immigration is virtually tied with “dissatisfaction with government” as the nation´s top problem. The economy and unemployment rank below immigration and “dissatisfaction with government" as top problems, the new poll found. Only 8 percent now rate healthcare as the top problem, down from 16 percent in January, when

The headlines last week were all about the potential windfall: A second appraisal of works in the Detroit Institute of Arts´ collection had come in and the number was several orders of magnitude larger than the first. How would you feel if someone promised to give you a car, and then reneged on that pledge? That’s how all Americans should feel when it comes to ObamaCare -- because Barack Obama’s failed and discredited campaign promise to lower health insurance premiums has cost the average American family an amount equal to the price of many new cars. During his 2008 campaign, one of then-Senator Obama’s most audacious promises was that his health plan would reduce premiums by $2,500 for the average family. His repeatedly made his pledge on videotape; you can view those promises here. But health insurance premiums
