Why Ukraine’s Euromaidan is not
spreading to other post-Soviet states

Washington Post, by Farid Guliyev *

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 3/22/2014 11:21:15 AM

Large-scale protests, like Euromaidan or the Arab Spring, tend to occur in waves clustered in time and space through the processes of cross-country political contention or diffusion, defined by Della Porta and Tarrow as “the spread of movement ideas, practices, and frames from one country to another”. The Euromaidan protest was a sustained demonstration against what was perceived as highly corrupt and personalistic rule of Yanukovych, who was impeached by parliamentary majority after fleeing the capital Feb. 22. The events in Kiev drew attention of opposition activists in Azerbaijan, Russia and Belarus.

Euromaidan is described as the protests from Ukraine that lead to ouster of Yanukovych. A loose translation, I think, of what this article is saying that this won´t be happening in other post-Soviet regimes. The reason being, as it began to snowball forward, too many other groups joined in and turned it violent and off the original message to challenge Yanukovych for his policies against EU and for Russia.

If you aren´t into WaPo - there´s an interesting article in the National Catholic Register by Victor Gaetan entitled The Issue of Ukraine and Crimea Is Complex.

It´s a discussion with Joseph Pearce (who wrote a bio of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn) which addresses some important and often overlooked aspects of the current crisis.

CNN Prompted Clinton-Friendly
Crowd to Applaud at Townhall
Breitbart Big Journalism, by John Nolte    Original Article

Washington Post media reporter Erik Wemple attended CNN´s Townhall event with Hillary Clinton Tuesday and reports that the network not only brought in a Clinton-friendly crowd but at various times a stage handler taught and directed the crowd to applaud. CNN later told Wemple no partisan fishing was used to bring in the townhall audience. But as Wemple points out, when you send invitations out for an event in Washington DC (a district where 91% of residents voted for Obama), it´s pretty obvious who is going to show up. Why CNN didn't use its considerable financial resources to fly in a politically diverse audience or hold the townnhall

Russia Obsesses Over
State Department Spokeswoman

Moscow - Russia is somewhat obsessed with Jen Psaki. The State Department spokeswoman has turned into Russia’s boogeyman (boogey-woman?) and favorite punching bag as relations with the United States have deteriorated over the crisis in Ukraine. She is demonized on television. Her gaffes are celebrated widely as internet memes on Russian social media. A popular radio morning show even mocked her in a song set to a popular children’s tune. (Snip) The song accused her of peddling “nonsense” to journalists and urged her to “keep it up, we want to laugh more.” Psaki’s statements are a regular feature of state-run media's

‘Scrap this broken agency’:

A new State Department Office of the Inspector General audit finds that the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), the agency that oversees U.S. international broadcasting, has wasted almost $5 million in taxpayer dollars on questionable and unapproved purchases. The State Department’s watchdog coined the BBGs mishap as a “systematic failure” of acquisitions. Rep. Ed Royce (R-Calif.), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee said that the BBG’s “wasteful spending, non-competitive contracting practices, and violations of current law point to an organization without accountable leadership.”

Cincinnati - A national anti-abortion group wants a federal court to block an Ohio law barring people from making false statements about candidates seeking elective office. The Susan B. Anthony List filed the motion Friday in Cincinnati, saying the law violates free speech rights. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that the group could challenge the law. The group was accused of violating the law during the 2010 election when it tried to post billboards accusing an Ohio congressman of supporting taxpayer-funded abortion because he backed the health care law. The congressman claimed the ads misrepresented true facts and violated

Houston - More than 400 large US military drones have crashed around the world in the past 13 years, a Washington Post investigation has found. The Post obtained documents detailing accidents including collisions with homes, farms, runways, roads, waterways and even an air force transport plane in midair. Several drones vanished while at cruising altitude and were lost. (Snip) Problems included pilot error, mechanical failure and communications challenges. Though unmanned aircraft have long been used by the US military in overseas operations and by US border patrol, their safety is of particular concern as they are set to become a

Cassano allo Jonio, Italy - Pope Francis launched a scathing attack on organised crime during a trip to the heartland of a feared syndicate on Sunday, declaring all mafia members "excommunicated" from the Catholic Church. The mafia "is the adoration of evil and contempt for common good. This evil must be beaten, expelled," he told worshippers near the hometown of a toddler killed in a clan war earlier this year. "Those who in their lives follow this path of evil, as mafiosi do, are not in communion with God. They are excommunicated," he told the congregation. With so much happening internationally and the number of scandals, crises and general screw-ups of the Obama administration here at home, it’s worth noting a disturbing development here on the domestic front: a rapidly expanding police state. On my radio program last week I had the pleasure of speaking with Cheryl Chumley, a reporter for The Washington Times, about her new book, “Police State USA: How George Orwell’s Nightmare is Becoming our Reality.” (Snip) Mrs. Chumley’s chapters in “Police State USA” provide a treatise on all the elements of society that are under attack as big government seeks to sustain

The White House has set up a taskforce to tackle the decline of honey bees. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the agriculture department will lead the effort, which includes $8m (£4.7m) for new honey bee habitats. Bee populations saw a 23% decline last winter, a trend blamed on the loss of genetic diversity, exposure to certain pesticides and other factors. A quarter of the food Americans eat, including apples, carrots and avocados, relies on pollination. (Snip) The decline in bee populations is also blamed on the loss of natural forage and inadequate diets, mite infestations and diseases.

The Obama administration’s claim to have been surprised by the wave of children flooding over out borders may turn out to be another political lie of the year. Sundance of Conservative Treehouse noticed a very peculiar advertisement: On January 29th of this year, the federal government posted an advertisement seeking bids for a vendor contract to handle “Unaccompanied Alien Children“. Not just any contract mind you, but a very specific contract – for a very specific number of unaccompanied minors: 65,000. • Why would DHS and ICE be claiming “surprise” by the current influx of unaccompanied minors on the border

Call it Paul Ryan’s finest hour. It’s a video of the congressman from Wisconsin confronting the commissioner of Internal Revenue over the missing Lois Lerner emails. It’s easy to see why the clip is going viral on the Web. It is one of those rare moments when Congress loses its temper and a major figure says what the American people are thinking. They don’t believe Commissioner John Koskinen is telling the truth. They don’t believe him. Mr. Koskinen protested. No one believed that either. Mr. Ryan’s ire was triggered by the suggestion of one of the Democrats that Mr. Koskinen

The South Dakota Republican Party state convention passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Barack Obama Saturday. The resolution says Obama has "violated his oath of office in numerous ways." It specifically cites the release of five Taliban combatants in a trade for captive U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl, Obama´s statement that people could keep insurance companies, and recent EPA regulations on power plants. "Therefore, be it resolved that the South Dakota Republican Party calls on our U.S. Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president of the United States," the resolution reads. First Lady Michelle Obama recently drew on her personal experience as a parent to justify her vastly unpopular intervention into the public school lunch program: Before coming to the White House, I struggled, as a working parent with a traveling, busy husband, to figure out how to feed my kids healthy, and I didn’t get it right. Our pediatrician had to pull me aside and point out some things that were going wrong. Outwardly, they put on a show of unity — but privately, the Obamas and Clintons, the two power couples of the Democrat Party, loathe each other. “I hate that man Obama more than any man I’ve ever met, more than any man who ever lived,” Bill Clinton said to friends on one occasion, adding he would never forgive Obama for suggesting he was a racist during the 2008 campaign. The feeling is mutual. Obama made excuses not to talk to Bill, while the first lady privately sniped about Hillary. On most evenings, Michelle Obama and her trusted adviser, Valerie Jarrett, met in a quiet corner of the White House residence.

I still think President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, even though for 14 years he allowed his literary agent to circulate a bio blurb stating he was born in Kenya, and even though for many years he attended a church where his pastor friend shouted such things as “God damn America!” I still think that he just pretended to be Kenyan to be cool, to sell books and, perhaps, to get a foreign student scholarship at those colleges from which he refuses to release his transcripts. He’s probably not actually Kenyan. But as I speculated

At the end of the Civil War, but before the pernicious reach of Jim Crow undermined the Union Army’s battlefield victory, former slaves and free blacks found themselves in possession of a most precious right -- the right to vote. It didn’t matter if a man had been a war hero in the famed, all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment or a house servant in a Southern plantation. All that mattered was that he was a man. To say that this development didn’t sit well with the progressive-minded women of this country is an understatement. The decision this past week by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to rescind federal trademark protections for the Redskins may ultimately tip the balance in the controversy over the 80-year-old name of Washington’s football team. If so, that would be a shame. Not because there’s insufficient reason to consider the name “disparaging to Native Americans,” as the patent office determined. Many of us recoil at the reference to skin color as a team identity. The problem is that the Redskins case is just the latest example of a federal agency going beyond its brief to inappropriately insert itself in
