Katrina victims live out

NEW ORLEANS -- I came to Louisiana to do some reporting on Sen. Mary Landrieu´s bid to win a fourth term in a tough political year. But before heading to the key parishes that will determine Landrieu´s fate this November, I stopped by the Lower Ninth Ward to see how rebuilding efforts are faring nearly nine years after Hurricane Katrina. I visited one particular spot — the area where in August 2005 a flood wall holding the waters of the Industrial Canal broke, setting off a calamity that continues to this day. The destruction was total; the rebuilding is at best

Wonderful. The Eco do-gooders are building houses (not homes) that people don´t want out of ECO friendly materials which have already begun to rot. The all-caring federal gub´mint must be involved, private groups couldn´t mess up this badly.

We were up and running after 10 months in Galveston, after Hurricane Ike flooded the entire city.

FTA... It was about building for returning residents 150 affordable LEED Platinum houses by some of the world’s best architects.

Maybe the problem is that the houses are "affordable" the way 0bamacare is "affordable".

The lower 9th ward was not a middle class housing district. It was where welfare moms lived and drug dealers plied their trade. It was government housing. It was old ´shot gun´ houses made of wood that were mostly crumbling structures. Pitt and friends are playing architect just to see what they can do. They aren´t building for those who lived there before. Unless the government ups their housing vouchers by two or three zeroes, no one can afford to live there.

Wonder why the Pitt-Jolies and their brood haven´t made a permanent move into one of those architectural monstrosities? Maybe because they would need all 150 of them to accommodate their lavish lifestyle.

Businesses aren´t moving into the area because they know the people there aren´t accustomed to paying for anything, unless it comes in a Ziploc baggie.

Why doesn´t Brad just adopt them all, to save the time and trouble of building housing?

I drive through that neighborhood twice each week. These houses were built for someone´s ego, not for the needs of the people living there. They are just weird, especially so many weird structures close together surrounded by overgrown lots with random, sporadic restoration efforts on the few remaining structures that survived the deluge cause by the break in the flood wall.
Most of New Orleans is rebuilt and doing fine. The lower 9th ward is a basket case and no one wants to invest in this area.

The 1st rule when building in a hot environment, is SHADE the walls. If sunlight strikes a wall, heat is gained by the house. Australians have a porch on all 4 walls.

It appears the builders of these houses, don´t understand the concept of heat gain.

Around 1969-70 the Office of Emergency Planning in the Executive Office of the President ran a "superdisaster" study. One of the possible disasters studied was a hurricane coming in the wrong direction over Lake Pontchartrain, just as Katrina did. The study concluded that if that happened and New Orleans flooded, as was likely without a lot of preventative work, (it did happen) it would be cheaper to move everyone into a new, better located, city than to try to Rebuild New Orleans. The results of the study were, of course, ignored. They didn´t even take the steps necessary to prevent the flooding!

You would think they were the only ones harmed by Katrina.

New Orleans does not have the same climate as CA and buildings are completely different.

Even Japan is busy accomplishing more than New Orleans after nine years.

CNN chose to describe the recently detained Jose Antonio Vargas, longtime journalist for U.S. publications and legal citizen of the Philippines, as a “symbol of the immigration debate.” The news network aired his documentary, Undocumented, several times. At the heart of Vargas’s viewpoint — and CNN’s decision to refer to him as a symbol, as opposed to, say, a scofflaw — is the notion that it is unfair to deny citizenship to him, considering his circumstances. Vargas came to the United States from the Philippines when he was 12 and didn’t learn he was in the country illegally until he was

CIUDAD HIDALGO, Mexico – Mexico is promising to stem the flow of Central American migrants to the United States by tightening control at its notoriously porous Guatemalan border. But messages from the country´s top two leaders in little more than a week have provided few details on how. And the scene on the ground is business as usual. Dozens of Central Americans who paid $1.50 a head could be seen this week crossing the broad Suchiate River on improvised rafts of inner tubes and wooden boards, in full view of Mexican police on the shore and immigration agents posted on

Millennial politics is simple, really. Young people support big government, unless it costs any more money. They´re for smaller government, unless budget cuts scratch a program they´ve heard of. They´d like Washington to fix everything, just so long as it doesn´t run anything. That´s all from a new Reason Foundation poll surveying 2,000 young adults between the ages of 18 and 29. Millennials´ political views are, at best, in a stage of constant metamorphosis and, at worst, "totally incoherent," as Dylan Matthews puts it. It´s not just the Reason Foundation. The idea of pulling nearly all American troops out of Afghanistan in 2016 suddenly seems pretty lousy, after so much of Iraq has collapsed under a similar scenario. When President Obama announced his plan to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2016, U.S. intelligence said it could be done safely. Now, intelligence and military leaders are privately warning that the U.S. counterterrorism forces could be needed there for much longer. During the internal administration debate earlier this year over the way forward in Afghanistan, the CIA supported a plan to degrade al Qaeda to the point that America could withdraw

The judgment rekindled a loud debate among those who say the symbol honors Confederate heritage and others who see it as racially offensive and hurtful. How does one explain the plummeting poll numbers for Barack Obama? Most people would point to the disarray and consequences of ObamaCare, the IRS scandal, the border crisis, the collapse of Iraq, the VA scandal, the impotent reaction to Russia’s seizure of Crimea, chronic long-term unemployment, and a host of nonsensical distractions staged by the White House to distract from all of the above and more. Last month, polls showed a majority of Americans thought Obama lacked the necessary leadership for his job, and rated his competence below that of George W. Bush at a similar point in their presidencies.

Then, all of a sudden, something intervened, causing a shift. Atmospheric carbon dioxide began to drop, steadily generating today´s world, with ice caps at both poles. But why did this happen? And better yet, could whatever triggered this drastic switch be used to temper today´s climate? Good questions. But the answers lay buried deep in the Arctic, hidden to researchers.
