Detroit— The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has a message for Detroit residents and companies more than 60 days late on their water bills: We’re coming for you. With more than half of the city’s customers behind on payments, the department is gearing up for an aggressive campaign to shut off service to 1,500-3,000 delinquent accounts weekly, said Darryl Latimer, the department’s deputy director. Including businesses, schools and commercial buildings, there are 323,900 Detroit water and sewerage accounts; 164,938 were overdue for a total of $175 million as of March 6. Residential accounts total 296,115; 154,229 were delinquent for a

Very cruel, expecting people to pay for something they use. No mention of EPA hijinks that have caused water bills to necessarily skyrocket in recent years, nationwide.

Keep the water turned on, it´s an absolute necessity.

Turn off the sewer, though.

I wonder how many of these bills are sent to vacant buildings. There are rumored to be quite a few.

No big deal the bedouins are used to such squalor. Just need to dig a few wells, buy a few camels and trot on down to the river for fresh water.

What could be easier for a third world city?

You do no one a favor when you allow people to go months or years without paying their water bill. The longer it runs on, the bigger the bill and soon the customer is faced with such a large amount that they can never pay it off.

Cut if off after 30 days and at least they have a chance to get it paid and turned back on.

Note that they have been pushing (without success) to switch water utilities to a region-wide system, so Detroit itself could wash it´s hands clean of collecting on water bills. Is there any function the city can perform without assistance from everyone else?

NEW YORK — Target is asking its customers to not bring firearms into its stores, even where it is allowed by law. In a statement posted Wednesday on the retailer´s corporate blog, interim CEO John Mulligan said that Target wants a "safe and inviting" atmosphere for its shoppers and employees. As the investigation into the Bourbon Street shooting continued Tuesday, police confirmed that six of the victims were visitors from out of state, including a woman from Australia. NOPD spokeswoman Hilal Williams sent out a press release shortly before 2:30 p.m., which included a change in what authorities had previously said - that six of the victims were women and four were men. But victim nr. 7, who police previously identified as a woman, is in fact a 22-year-old New Orleans man, who was treated and has since been released from the hospital. New Orleans is among the most risky real estate markets in the country when looking at the biggest gains and losses homeowners have experienced over the past three decades, Bloomberg reported recently. Bloomberg and real estate website Zillow.com analyzed data from 1979 through last year to find the biggest swings in home values. The city´s worst year was 1987-1988 when values fell 7.2 percent; the city´s biggest gains were 2012-2013

With its finances in the red and its role sharply curtailed, questions are being raised about the long-term future of the agency that put New Jersey on the map of big-time sports. But no matter what its fate, the hard truth is that the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which once netted tens of millions of dollars annually from The Meadowlands Racetrack and Giants Stadium, will likely be a lingering financial liability for state taxpayers. A series of decisions by officials over time have left it marooned, with significant structural costs and little means to pay for them

Since lying and deceit generally benefit the liar, we have to ask, ”What was in it for Bill Ayers?” A mea culpa for past crimes? Hardly.
