Another Mississippi outrage:
Young mother faces life in
prison for stillborn child

Washington Post, by Radley Balko

Original Article

ProPublica reporter Nina Martin has written a long and exceptional article about a disgraceful case in Mississippi that touches on two issues we’ve recently covered here at The Watch — the persecution of women accused of ingesting drugs while pregnant, and the dubious expertise of longtime Mississippi medical examiner Steven Hayne. Rennie Gibbs’s daughter, Samiya, was a month premature when she simultaneously entered the world and left it, never taking a breath. To experts who later examined the medical record, the stillborn infant’s most likely cause of death was also the most obvious: the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck.

Not reading the sad article, and I wouldn´t be surprised if this is all about making sure women don´t abort on their own, robbing the abortion industry of their livelihood...sick.

So the girl is 16 years old and on hard drugs. I believe the medical examiner because he did a thorough job, not relying on just one usual cause, but did a blood test.

Sad, but I don´t believe the baby had much of a future in life with this mother.

If you read the article, you will see that the medical examiner in this case has a long record of mendacity.

I do find it interesting that the mother was apparently willing to carry the baby to term rather than aborting it early on. Good for her for that. I would think unless she was a really super hard drug user drugs wouldn´t kill the baby, just perhaps ruin it for life. I am inclined to go with the umbilical cord.

When Alecia Phonesavanh heard her 19-month-old son, Bounkham, screaming, she thoughthe was simply frightened by the armed men who had burst into the house in the middle of the night. Then she saw the charred remains of the portable playpen where the toddler had been sleeping, and she knew something horrible had happened. Bounkham "Bou Bou" Phonesavanh, who is in a medically induced coma at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, may never wake up. But the appalling injuries he suffered during a police raid in Habersham County, Georgia, last week should awaken the country to the moral obscenity that is

Residents of El Paso, Texas, last week were struck by a deeply troubling sight. A billboard usually in the service of peaceful, commercial enterprise had been painted over with the ominous words “Plata o Plomo” — a familiar borderland phrase meaning “Take the bribe or take the bullet.” Dangling by a hangman’s noose beneath the billboard was a mannequin in a business suit. From a second billboard another mannequin was similarly hanged.(Snip) The “drug war,” while targeting far worse substances as well, is primarily about weed. It is, after all, an iron law of prohibition that markets for more dangerous poisons

Texas man faces possible life

A couple of weeks ago, I put up a post about the absurd method in which the drug laws allow law enforcement officials to determine the quantity of an illicit drug for which a suspect can be charged. The laws aren’t written to punish offenders for the amount of a given drug they have made available to the public (or, put another way, for the amount of harm they have done). They’re written to inflict the maximum possible amount of punishment.(snip) A Texas man accused of making and selling marijuana brownies is facing up to life in prison if convicted.

CHULA VISTA, CALIF. — A series of lawsuits filed in recent months in federal courts along the U.S. border with Mexico highlight what advocates say is a growing list of complaints against two U.S. agencies that have expanded rapidly amid the clamor to secure the nation’s borders. In one lawsuit, centered on events in Chula Vista, Calif., a Border Patrol agent is accused of leaping on the hood of a car driven by a mother of five and shooting her dead. She was unarmed. The agent had been fired from his previous job as a sheriff’s deputy for a variety

Her name, like that of nearly all the victims, is unknown. Not older than a teenager, she has large, downturned eyes, long and wavy hair, and pale skin. She wears a demure white dress, suggesting that the life she lived before she found herself in this dungeon was one of innocence. She stares through the bars of her cage and, because she cannot save herself, prays for rescue. Behind her, a man wearing a bowler hat and a lascivious grin gazes upon his captive prey through the smoke of his cigar. He has paid to rape her and she is

Pueblo West, Colo. – It’s 9:00 A.M. on a weekday, and I’m at the Marisol Therapeutics pot shop. This is serious business. Security is tight. ID checks are frequent. Merchandise is strictly regulated, labeled, wrapped, and controlled. The store is clean, bright, and safe. The staffers are courteous and professional. Customers of all ages are here. There’s a middle-aged woman at the counter nearby who could be your school librarian. On the opposite end of the dispensary, a slender young soldier in a wheelchair with close-cropped hair, dressed in his fatigues, consults with a clerk.

Sarah Palin wants to impeach Barack Obama. In an op-ed article published last week, the former Republican vice presidential nominee declared that the crisis on the southern border (where young illegal immigrants are being detained) "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´No, mas´." The Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner, thinks that´s loco. (Technically, he said, "I disagree".) For Republicans hoping to avoid the kind of drama that might derail what looks to be a very good midterm election year, this kind of call is both a nuisance and a trend. On April 1, the U.S. economy dropped a whopping 2.9 percent for the first three months of the year (no fooling). The American workforce participation rate fell to a 40-year low. One-third of people aged 18-29 have moved back in with their parents. Millions of Americans this summer will enjoy yet another “staycation”: They just can’t afford to go to the beach or the mountains, even for a week — again. (Snip) Forget that the United States is deep into what Mr. Obama dramatically declares a “humanitarian crisis,” that the Middle East is a powder keg about to blow, that Iraq has all but fallen to Islamist terrorists. A Fox News exclusive reported this morning by Jana Winter inexplicably buried the lede. Winter reports that several dead children have been discovered “washed up along the riverbank” of the Rio Grande, but fails to note that there have been no reports by the Obama administration on this. This indicates a pattern of covering up dead illegal alien kids by the Obama administration. It was two weeks before news was reported on the sole child death acknowledged by the Obama administration, Gilberto Ramos, a 15 year-old boy from Guatemala whose body was found in the Texas brush dead from the

President Obama is “absolutely” the most transparent president in history, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Sunday after the White House received a letter from signed by a dozen top journalists’ groups complaining about the administration’s policies toward the media. “There are a number of steps that we´ve taken to give people greater insight into what´s happening at the White House,” Earnest said in an interview with CNN’s “Reliable Sources.” The letter, signed by the Society of Professional Journalists and the Poynter Institute, among others, accuses the White House of "politically driven suppression of news and information about federal agencies." The “ugly American” has gotten a lot uglier over the past few weeks, from the streets of California to the halls of Congress and state houses around the country. A growing number of our fellow Americans have taken on grotesque features, in looks and sounds, in reaction to the thousands of children from Central America who have crossed our borders as they flee poverty and violence in hope for something better. Sadly, the arrival of these youngsters has been greeted by flag-waving, sign-carrying, Bible-thumping and Constitution-quoting citizens demanding that they not be received here and that they be returned immediately to their

Inquiring minds wonder if there’s a “G” in the grading repertoire. And that does not stand for “good.” Pollster John Zogby has given President Obama an “F” this week for the White House performance on the global stage, and the researcher has no imminent good news for the president. “Some people have really bad weeks. Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff got an ‘F’ after the nation’s soccer team lost to Germany. But President Obama’s week was just as bad,” Mr. Zogby says. “Israel and the Palestinians are at war again.
