Asheville-area school embroiled
in ‘My Little Pony’ bullying dispute

ASHEVILLE- A 9-year-old boy is getting international attention from his battle with a Buncombe County school over his right to carry a “My Little Pony” lunch bag to class. Grayson Bruce, a student at Candler Elementary School, is now being home schooled because his mother, Noreen, said her son was bullied at school for carrying the lunch bag. She said school officials would not support her son. Noreen Bruce said she is scheduled to meet Thursday with Buncombe County Schools Superintendent Tony Baldwin to discuss the issue. In the meantime, Grayson and his lunch bag have become a sensation around

Comments:
Perhaps the best way to support this child is to tell him it´s a good idea to keep the lunch box at home for a few years, which is what the school did. If he wants to carry it when he is older, fine. Don´t parade this on TV where he will ultimately be made fun of by a wider audience. Kids make fun of other kids who do weird things. It may not be nice and it isn´t right, but it´s life and part of being a parent is protecting your child from inviting abuse.

You do to bullies today the same way we did in 1964: you kick their butt!

Criminy, didn´t we learn ANYTHING from watching ´The Andy Griffith Show´?

The mom is teaching her son some great lessons. Next time he is teased, will the media care?

It´s a cold, cruel world out there, and kids need to learn this and learn how to solve their OWN problems. When did they get so hyper-sensitive??
As the smallest kid in my class, I had to either take the teasing or end it.
Like Ralphie in the Christmas Story, I had to learn to fight back, and when I did, that was the end to the teasing.

What happens if this boy is gay or some other kid in that school is gay/lesbian. Bullying would be ok and you tell the victim go home be be home schooled?

Sorry, but few boys in this country of ours would carry a My Little Pony backpack.....he´s asking for trouble and his parents perhaps should have prepared him for what lay ahead if he chose to carry it?

I can´t believe the simple headed attitude of people here.

Did you read the article? This was not teasing, these kids, in groups, were punching him and knocking him down.

The answers I have heard so far is that, he´s teasing, he should kick some butt, and hey, it´s a cold cruel world out there, learn life´s lessons.

Well, let´s play the game. First, it is clear this is not teasing, this is beating on a kid. "Kicking some butt" will kit the kid suspended, and with the potential to miss class and fall behind. Plus, what is he going to do, take on 6 or 7 kids?

Oh, and there is no lesson learned here. Why not? Because in the "real cold cruel world", outside of school, someone victimizes someone else and they go to JAIL. Period. Or, end up in a pine box because they chose to pick on the wrong guy. THAT´s the real world.

I am stupefied by the collective dimwits on this thread who make it the victims fault.

Next I´ll be hearing the girl in the short skirt "asked" to be raped. I hope none of you are parents, because your idea for life´s lesson is to conform, appease, and take your beatings.

My blame is for the stupid mother. Why is she allowing a nine year old boy to take a My Little Pony bag to school?

Didn´t she have just a slight Clue that he´d get teased, bullied or something?

I sent this to my daughter and she said she doesn´t allow her youngest girl to take some things to school because she may be teased or whatever.

What the heck is the matter with parents these days. Dumber than rocks.

Right #12, blame the victim, and the victim´s family.

And the girl who got raped should never have worn a skirt or a bathing suit right, because it´s her fault too?

Sorry, but I´m not into victimology . I´m into parents, in this case, having some good sense to protect their children from little kids society which can be cruel wether it´s appropriate or not.

So sorry to butt in here, but this is not bullying. This is gang activity. The persons engaged (ages 9? 10? 11?) in the attacks would not do so on an individual basis. When I (at the tender age of 60) was run over on the sidewalk by a kid on a bicycle, it was to get points for the gang he wanted to join (he was watched from across the street). The assault could not have been for any other purpose, as I was not robbed.
Gang activity has to be snuffed out, so that each child can choose his/her own path to maturity.
Just read Harry Potter to learn about gangs.
Gang activity leads to mob activity, as in the rise of Nazi Germany.
Can we please focus on gangs?
This is how the Crips and the Bloods got started.
Just read Alinsky to find out how to use a gang to get what you want.

#20, the problem is that even with "conservatives", as you see right on this thread, is the knee-jerk reaction to blame the child or the parents.

I suppose if this was Austria or Germany a few decades back, and this kid was a Jew, better not admit that to anyone, because that is "common sense".

If you are black but can pass for white, better tell everyone you are white as that is "common sense". And the black mother is a fool for letting her child admit he is black!

That is the problem with our society. Instead of blaming the morons causing the trouble, there are those in great number who point the cause at some kid whose hobby is a cartoon animal.

I think a number of people on this board really need to go get some therapy, I really do.

RALEIGH- The General Assembly’s decision to do away with voter preregistration in 2013 has created confusion in state driver’s license offices, where 50,000 teenagers a year had been signed up in a program that automatically added their names to voter rolls when they turned 18. Since September, when part of the sweeping elections overhaul bill took effect, state Division of Motor Vehicles officials have had difficulty figuring out at what age newly licensed drivers should be allowed to register to vote. This issue is one of many expected to be raised next week in federal court by lawyers representing the

U.S. Postal Service workers are planning a protest uptown Thursday, as they rally against a plan to sell more postal services at Staples without postal service employees. The 220,000-member American Postal Workers Union has been fighting the USPS for months over the Staples plan. In November, the postal service began placing counters selling stamps and offering services such as sending packages, priority and certified mail in more than 80 Staples stores. Union leaders worry the postal service will expand the program to Staples 1,500 North American stores. The USPS says such partnerships with retailers are crucial as the postal service

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security.
