Gates: Tax consumption to fix
unemployment caused by technology

The Daily Caller, by Neil Munro

Original Article

Billionaire software mogul Bill Gates has joined the growing chorus of tech experts who predict that low-skill Americans will face greater unemployment because more jobs are being done by software and robots. The Microsoft founder, whose net worth is $76 billion, suggested the problem could be fixed by reducing taxes on employers and raising taxes on employees, via the reduction of payroll taxes and the addition of new federal consumption taxes.

Comments:
Hmmm. Technology will reduce the demand for low skilled workers, but we need to import more of them. We also need to reduce taxes on employment to encourage companies to hire more people because the country needs employment. Then we raise taxes on workers to pay for the welfare of the new immigrants we imported to replace American workers but no longer need...

I though the economy improves if we buy more stuff? If the VAT ( what it is) discourages my purchase how does that help anyone?

Obviously Gates is not an idiot. Taxing jobs does lead to fewer jobs. All he is saying is tax the jobs less and tax consumption more.
People should save more and not spend every penny they have and can borrow. This is an old idea but never really tried. Liberals don´t like consumption taxes because even the poor end up paying their fair share.

Who is going to buy the NEW software and hardware that his (former) company is "forcing" computer users to buy if they have less money to spend ?

SO the punk thief of others hard work and selling it under DOS and Windows tells us how solve another problem..

No thanks Bill, making money only proves you are devious and likely crooked (think of all the crooked stuff you did to eleminate competition). It does NOT make you SMARTER than everyone else.

Ah, yes Bill: and XP support ends April 8th. As to job displacement due to technology: that has been going on since invention of the wheel, only accelerated since the industrial revolution.

The solution is education (by dedicated teachers, not unionized thugs) that can be aided by technology, and taxing consumption. I´ll agree with Bill on the latter.

Fair Tax.

Another solution is to expand our horizons and tackle new national goals with our "surplus" labor pool. Re-vitalizing NASA might be a start. Land on Mars. Mine the asteroids. We´ve only scratched the surface.

A tax for thee, but not for me? Gates would hardly be affected by such a tax - unless he started buying space shuttles. But Joe Blow citizen will be very affected. I´d give a little more credence to a tax idea of his if he put more of his own skin on the line. He has a history of letting others take the risks, though...

#4: Good idea. If employers had to pay MORE for a visa holder than for an American citizen, they´d first make darned sure there wasn´t an American who could the job instead. Right now the H1B program is just high-tech slavery.

You don´t fix unemployment by paying people not to work. Gates is right about a consumption tax being better, but for the wrong reasons. Consumption taxes are fairer because the payer has some control over how much he pays. Libs hate it for that reason.

Just a few years ago he was worth only 45 billion! Wow! When does someone have enough? I can really assure you, if I had that much net worth, I´d be doing a whole lot more to make sure people had jobs other than just exhaling and exercising my vocal cords. I´d be doing something constructive with my mega-billions.

Federal agents planned to arrest North Miami Mayor Lucie Tondreau on mortgage fraud charges Monday but she was out of town — attending a convention in Las Vegas. When she returns, the mayor will join three other suspects facing charges of conspiring to commit wire fraud and actual wire under an indictment unsealed Monday afternoon. All four were charged with defrauding lenders on $8 million in loans used to purchase 20 South Florida properties by using “straw buyers” in 2006, according to the indictment. The mayor is accused of using her radio program at the time to recruit alleged buyers for the fraudulent loans.

A Fox News exclusive reported this morning by Jana Winter inexplicably buried the lede. Winter reports that several dead children have been discovered “washed up along the riverbank” of the Rio Grande, but fails to note that there have been no reports by the Obama administration on this. This indicates a pattern of covering up dead illegal alien kids by the Obama administration. It was two weeks before news was reported on the sole child death acknowledged by the Obama administration, Gilberto Ramos, a 15 year-old boy from Guatemala whose body was found in the Texas brush dead from the

The U.S. deported Honduran children as young as 1-1/2 years old on Monday in the first flight since President Obama pledged to speed up the process of sending back illegal immigrant minors from Central America. Fleeing violence and poverty, record numbers of children from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala have crossed into the United States over the past year, sparking intense debate about how to solve the problem. Monday´s flight from New Mexico to San Pedro Sula, the city with the highest murder rate in the world, returned 17 Honduran women, as well as 12 girls and nine boys, aged

The Obama administration quietly announced on Tuesday that it intends to change the way Americans learn about natural disasters and other major emergencies during radio and TV broadcasts, giving the president the ability to flip a switch and address the entire nation at once. The Emergency Alert System, the latest version of a program first established in 1951, blasts out emergency messages in the event of local weather emergencies, but can also be used to warn Americans about terror attacks and major natural disasters. “Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security. The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

Contrary to what those who defend the right to own high-powered assault rifles believe, not all guns are created equal. Due to a combination of availability, portability and criminal usage the following five types of guns are the country's most dangerous. School Shootings: Widely Reported Tragedies Since 2000 - Using firearm trace data from the ATF, as well as FBI homicide records, we determined the types of guns most often recovered from crime scenes and/or used in murders. WASHINGTON — It was an enduring image of his presidency: a chastened Bill Clinton walking his dog while wife Hillary keeps her distance as the family leaves town at the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal — but it was all part of a contrived public-repentance campaign, according to a new book. With Bill on the skids and his wife’s future prospects on the line, it was necessary for the pubic to see the president being punished, said Weekly Standard online editor Daniel Halper in his new book, “Clinton, Inc.: The Audacious Rebuilding of a Political Machine.” “They understood that
