Asian-American vs. African-American
National Review Online, by Kevin D. Williamson

Original Article

A lefty friend once asked me whether I thought I held any subconsciously racist opinions. One should always be on the lookout for one’s own intellectual and moral defects, so I’ve been thinking about it, and I have a possible candidate: As I suggest in my NRO piece today, “Asian-American” seems to me to be an obviously nonsensical category, because it includes people of origins ranging from Pakistani to Japanese. But “African-American” has never seemed immediately nonsensical to me in the same way. This may be because I know a little bit more about Asia than I do about Africa,

I have no use for anyone who requires a hyphen to describe their status as an American.

Colorblind Harry Reid continues to divide
Review Journal [Las Vegas, NV], by Editorial    Original Article

Harry Reid is the da Vinci of distraction. The moment any scandal, policy failure or political defeat crashes down on him — and there have been plenty the past few years — the Senate majority leader unleashes outrageous rhetoric that’s better suited for a sandbox than what once passed for the world’s greatest deliberative body. Worse, the Nevada Democrat has become especially fond of slinging race cards just to crank up the outrage. Last week, Sen. Reid was in rare form following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn part of the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate. The 5-4 ruling declared

It took Mike and Chantell Sackett five years and a unanimous Supreme Court decision just to gain a fighting chance against a thuggish Environmental Protection Agency. Officials appeared at their Idaho property in 2007 threatening them with fines of $37,500 per day unless they immediately stopped construction on their dream home on land they owned near a lake. The agency cited the Clean Water Act after a neighbor complained, perhaps upset at the prospect of another home being built in the well-developed neighborhood. There are dozens of adjacent homes, multiple piers on the lake and even a well-trafficked marina close

Massachusetts now forced into border spat

It’s finally been confirmed what was suspected all along — Massachusetts is feeling the pain of the chaotic border crisis. Forget the denials. Secret flights of illegal immigrants have made their way to Bedford and Boston. I guess Attorney General Martha Coakley and state police are out of the loop because they said in recent weeks they had no knowledge of it. We’ve learned from immigration officials that four planes filled with detainees nabbed on the border landed at Hanscom Field and Logan International Airport since April as the U.S. scrambles to cap the immigration crisis. Three other flights chartered by President Obama’s immigration

Even before the shooting stops between Israel and Palestinian terrorists, the one guarantee is that Israel will get most of the blame. Already the demands from the United Nations that Israel show “restraint” are as predictable as Palestinian rockets. The tiny Jewish state is under fierce attack, with millions of its citizens spending long hours in bomb shelters. Yet any response beyond a mere t*t-for-tat is labeled disproportionate, putting Israel in the impossible position of being damned if it does and doomed if it doesn’t. Of course, it must strike back hard, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears resolved that the Hamas

I hid Robert E. Lee in a basement utility closet. Along with a matching framed print of Stonewall Jackson and a large photo of the Confederate flag. My writers’ group was on the way over for our monthly meeting, which I’d offered to host last month at my parents’ Shenandoah Valley vacation cabin near Lexington, Va. Some hostesses worry about their appetizers, others about the cleanliness of their homes. I worried I’d be branded a garden-variety racist. I didn’t think I could explain away the cabin’s Confederate-lite decor. “Oh, bless your heart, that’s just a regimental battle flag that meant something

NASHVILLE — Republican candidates for governor around the country have built an unexpectedly strong position for election this fall, helped by an improving economy, disaffection with President Obama and a national fund-raising machine that is leagues ahead of the opposition. Four years after an economic crisis and opposition to Mr. Obama’s health care law propelled Republicans to capture a lopsided majority of statehouses across the country, they are faced with a staggering political task: defending 22 of the 36 executive mansions that will be up for grabs in November, led by a governor who is trying to rebound from a

WASHINGTON — Whether he means it to or not, the border crisis has been very good for Rick Perry. The Texas governor and failed 2012 presidential candidate has been trying to re-emerge on the national stage as a serious contender for another presidential run. Brandishing glasses instead of cowboy boots, he’s gone to great lengths to explain away his embarrassing performance during the 2012 election and had some serious early missteps, including having to walk back a comment where he compared homosexuality to alcoholism. But the thousands of undocumented immigrants crossing into the United States in recent months, and Perry’s perch as

In downtown Detroit, at the headquarters of the online-mortgage company Quicken Loans, there stands another downtown Detroit in miniature. The diorama, made of laser-cut acrylic and stretching out over 19 feet in length, is a riot of color and light: Every structure belonging to Quicken’s billionaire owner, Dan Gilbert, is topped in orange and illuminated from within, and Gilbert currently owns 60 of them, a lordly nine million square feet of real estate in all. He began picking up skyscrapers just three and a half years ago, one after another, paying as little as $8 a square foot. He bought

Last week, a self-described heir to the Prophet Muhammad declared himself the supreme leader of a new Islamic state stretching from eastern Syria to northern Iraq. How did Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the nom de guerre of a mediocre Iraqi religious scholar in his mid-40s, outmaneuver al Qaeda as the new vanguard of jihadist ideology? How did he and his followers—armed with Kalashnikovs, smart phones and their ominous black banner—so suddenly take over the campaign to rid the Muslim world of Western and secular influence? The rise of Mr. Baghdadi and his newly proclaimed "caliphate" highlights what had been a closely held

As a defender of the nation’s borders, President Obama is a hell of a pool player. The president enjoyed a game at a bar in Denver with Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper the other day, without the noir atmosphere of his furtive visits to pool halls with his grandfather as a kid, when he felt “the enticement of darkness and the click of the cue ball, and the jukebox flashing its red and green lights.” Obama’s game the other day was bright and cheery, as one would expect of a president who didn’t have any depressing visits to frightened ranchers, overwhelmed border agents or desperate migrants on his future itinerary.

This is his fundamental transformation of America ... President Obama´s rewarding of lawlessness, including his own, is the foundational problem here ... It´s time to impeach; and on behalf of American workers and legal immigrants of all backgrounds, we should vehemently oppose any politician on the Left or Right who would hesitate in voting for articles of impeachment.” That this desperate cry for attention (dangling participle and all)

Barack Obama may have lost a few approval rating points with this move. The president was seen cutting the line at Austin´s Franklin Barbecue Thursday afternoon, while in town to raise money for the Democratic Party. Lives at the eatery are infamously long, and have been known to stretch as long as three hours wait. But Mr Obama did no waiting today, as he showed up at the restaurant, shook a few hands and made his way straight to the register to order more than $300 worth of meat. ´I know this is a long line. In his weekly radio/YouTube address, President Obama derided House Republicans’ planned lawsuit against him, warning that GOP lawmakers will spend taxpayer dollars on a frivolous legal challenge. “It’s a political stunt that’s going to waste months of America’s time. Angry Democrats in Nebraska said the Obama Outhouse float in the 4th of July parade may have been racist. So now Eric Holder is looking into it. The department sent a member of its Community Relations Service team, which gets involved in discrimination disputes, to a Thursday meeting about the issue. Also at the meeting were the NAACP, the Norfolk mayor and The Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The Odd Fellows organized the parade. One of the floats included a zombie-like mannequin standing near

That was when their adventure of a lifetime turned into a nightmare. It began with a fever, then a rash and then Lyra became lethargic. Glenn Beck has set up Mercury One Children and Family Border Relief Fund to help illegals coming into the United States. He’s already raised $600,000. Beck stated that Obama would not have to step in and ask for $3.7 billion if private charities would pick up the slack and give to the swarm of illegals crossing the border. Is he kidding? Do we really need more churches and non-profits enabling this blatant attack on America? Rich people and liberal elite billionaires have no skin in the game when it comes to the consequences of illegal immigration so what do they care? It’s the working class and middle class who will take the hit.

On Friday’s broadcast of PBS’s “NewsHour” New York Times columnist David Brooks and Creators Syndicate columnist Mark Shields took on the House Speaker John Boehner’s lawsuit against the Obama administration, which alleges oversteps in executive authority by the Obama White House. Both acknowledged Boehner’s gripe with the Obama administration had merit, but were skeptical of the lawsuit’s chances. However, they both also took on the alternative offered by former Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK), which was to impeach President Barack Obama. Both dismissed that course of action as well, with Brooks calling it “cloud cuckoo land.” Partial transcript as follows: WOODRUFF: So the Highway Trust
