U.S. Invades Country, Life
Expectancy Goes from 42 to 62

National Review Online, by Josh Encinias

Original Article

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) laid out a compelling case today that American and NATO involvement in Afghanistan since the 2001 invasion has been a boon for that country’s people. Donald Sampler of the Afghanistan office at USAID told a House hearing Thursday about the substantial improvements to life expectancy, education, and infrastructure. Some of those include: Life expectancy increased from 42 to 62 years old. ? In 2001, 800,000 Afghan children were enrolled in school; none of them were girls. Today, there are close to 8 million students in school, and one third of them are girls. ? 90 percent of

Remember the scene in Lawrence of Arabia when the Arabs take Damascus but can´t keep the power and water on? They all get disgusted and go back to their tribal ways. That´s what will happen here.

A year from now the schools will be closed, the phones won´t work and the girls will be back in submission.

Right #1. All this blood-soaked progress will have been for naught, just like Iraq. I don´t even know how it can be said that the Obama administration has a foreign policy.

This may come as a shock, but only 55 million years ago, our planet had no polar ice caps; in fact, it nearly became a steamy, runaway greenhouse world, with CO2 levels exceeding 2,500 ppm. Then, all of a sudden, something intervened, causing a shift. Atmospheric carbon dioxide began to drop, steadily generating today´s world, with ice caps at both poles. But why did this happen? And better yet, could whatever triggered this drastic switch be used to temper today´s climate? Good questions. But the answers lay buried deep in the Arctic, hidden to researchers. A pair of lawmakers from Texas will introduce bipartisan legislation in Congress on Tuesday to speed up the deportations of tens of thousands of Central American children who have entered the country illegally across the southern border. Sen. John Cornyn (R) and Rep. Henry Cuellar (D) say their bill aims to amend a 2008 law that currently requires the federal government to provide greater legal protections to young immigrants who attempt to enter the United States from noncontiguous countries. The legislation would rewrite the law to allow Central American minors be treated like those from Mexico and Canada, who can

Facing a torrent of state laws restricting access to safe and legal abortions, supporters of a woman’s right to make her own childbearing decisions have been forced to play a defensive game — trying to block enactment of the laws, and, when that doesn’t work, challenging them in court. An important hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday could begin to move the dynamics of the fight in a positive direction. The subject of the hearing is the Women’s Health Protection Act, a vital measure that would safeguard the reproductive rights of women all across the nation, regardless of where

Scrapbook Photos: Obama’s
Summer Road Trips

A restless President Barack Obama has ventured out on an array of field trips, stopping at local hotspots when he travels and ambling around Washington, D.C. He’s dined on burgers, pizza, barbecue, ice cream and a Chipotle burrito bowl on recent outings. And last week, he shot pool and drank beer during a stop in Denver. White House officials say the forays into Americans’ everyday lives help re-energize the president and connect him with average folks. But with Mr. Obama’s legislative proposals stalled and his approval ratings sagging, the excursions also are aimed at reanimating the president’s agenda and providing

The Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal just released their 2014 Index of Economic Freedom. One of the surprising results is that the United States is no longer in the top 10 freest economies in the world. In fact, the United States’s economic freedom score has declined every year since 2008. From Heritage: The United States, with an economic freedom score of 75.5, is the 12th freest economy in the 2014 Index. Its score is half a point lower than last year, primarily due to deteriorations in property rights, fiscal freedom, and business freedom. …The U.S. is the only country to have

Does President Obama want to solve the border crisis? It depends on what the meaning of "solve" is. The president says a majority of the tens of thousands of families and unaccompanied children flooding across the southwestern border will be returned to their home countries. But his actions suggest that won´t really happen. Most of Obama´s $3.7 billion border crisis spending request will go to the "care, feeding, and transportation costs of unaccompanied children and family groups," according to a statement to Congress by Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson. Even some of the costs that appear to be slated for the

Nineteen terrifying words from the Omaha World-Herald: The U.S. Department of Justice has joined the discussions over a controversial float in the Norfolk Independence Day parade. Thus did the federal government dispatch an emissary to investigate a minor instance of Midwestern dissent. A quick recap for the happily uninitiated: The “controversial float” in question was one of many included in this year’s Independence Day parade in Norfolk, Neb. The entry, which featured a zombie standing on an outhouse marked “Obama Presidential Library,” was created by a veteran named Dale Remmich, and was designed, Remmich claims, to express the “political disgust” that he feels

The Democrats owe a growing debt to the Republican red-hots pursuing the fantasy of impeaching Barack Obama. They’re collecting a lot of cash — probably not as much as they claim, but a lot — from the naive and excitable folks in the Democratic base. Outrage is easily convertible to cash, as every bagman knows, and the Republicans should get a cut of it. Fair is fair. The new California gold rush is a bit, well, nutty: According to USDA predictions reported Monday, farmers will harvest a record 2.1 billion pounds of almonds this year. That´s great news for almond-lovers, but not-so-great news for California, which produces 80 percent of the world´s almonds. A single almond requires 1.1 gallons of water to produce, and seeing as the state is currently in the middle of a devastating drought, that´s water farmers have to drill deep for – 2,500 feet deep, in fact. So why keep almond groves around? Because the U.S. and Asia´s demand for the nuts is skyrocketing. Between

The Obama administration long ago cultivated a sense among its defenders that lingering American racism inspires most of its critics, but it was Obama’s supporters in the press who elevated the practice of accusing conservatives of racial animus to farcical virtuosity. It was Obama’s boosters in the liberal blogosphere, many of whom found microphones for their agitation on networks like MSNBC, who invented the art of detecting “dog whistle” racism. For those unfamiliar, this is the ability to decode supposed appeals to racial solidarity that only a professional can ascertain. While these coded claims are rarely perceived by their alleged

Where is the red line of impeachment? In theory, a red line might be located somewhere on a list of impeachable offenses – perhaps at the point where a certain number of transgressions is exceeded, or next to a specific instance because of its significance or impact. In reality, though, that red line exists along a spectrum of “political will.” As Andrew McCarthy explained: “You can have a thousand provable impeachable offenses, but before Congress may remove the president from power, there must be strong popular support – a public will that cuts across partisan and ideological lines.”
