What gradual climate warming
could mean for Michigan tourism

Gannett Michigan, by Kathleen Lavey

Original Article

Posted By:Ribicon, 2/23/2014 12:18:31 AM

Lined up in the parking lot of the Mt. Brighton ski area last summer, rows of new, state-of-the-art snow-making equipment gave the place a military feel. They even call the huge, round fans that cool and crystallize droplets of water into snowflakes “guns.” The equipment, part of a $10 million renovation at the popular Livingston County ski area, is an investment in the future by its new owners, Colorado-based Vail Resorts. (Snip) But it’s also critical hardware to cope with longer-term climate change, which has boosted the average temperature in the U.S. about 1.5 degrees

Comments:
Climate warming? Global change?

Keep repeating the lie, ignore the snowplows.

Record setting cold and snow in Michigan this year...much colder and deeper than 1.5 degrees will make disappear.

So, the new owners bought snow guns because in 2114 (100 years from now), climate change could really alter Michigan´s climate. Very long-sighted, these owners.
And climate change is responsible for last year´s heat wave and this year´s extreme cold. I wish that other scientists could cover all their bases like that and never be wrong.

If Global Luke Warming were real it would be a boom for Michigan. The sea levels would rise plunging the East and Left coast cities into the sea which would cause the property values in the inner states to soar. Having spent 8 days this winter in my house hiding from snow, ice, wind, etc., I´d love to see some warming. It was so cold Hillary was snuggling with Slick and ØDumbø burned his copy of the Communist Manifesto.

Old Kathleen´s really hitting on all cylinders; in a gorebull warming propaganda piece´s first two sentences she was also able to employ dark innuendos towards other perennial ´progressive´ targets with, "a military feel" and "guns". As in the snow guns that shoot manufactured snow onto ski runs, now deemed "critical hardware" needed to ease the distress we poor humans will suffer when gorebull warming threatens our ski experience.

Puleeeeze!

We came out of the Little Ice Age just in the 1800s. It´s a GOOD thing there was climate change, which boosted the average temperature in the U.S. about 1.5 degrees over the past 100 years. And now there hasn´t been any warming for something like 17 years. What´s the problem? There are many important problems we could be dealing with, instead of beating this dead horse over and over again.

I know some highly educated people. Some speak several languages. Some have multiple college degrees. Some are very high powered attorneys. Some are competent General Contractors. Some are recovering alcoholics. But they all have a couple things in common. They ALL believe man made global warming is as real as the Easter Bunny and The Tooth Fairy, and they are all as dumb as a box of rocks. I mean they seriously believe in all of this bull. I can not convince them it´s not true. I can not convince them to look up The Milankovitch Cycles. I can not convince them that carbon dioxide is not a pollutant. I can not convince them that if we did not have CO2 in the atmosphere that plans would die and all living beings on the planet would die. I can not convince them that CO2 only comprises 4/10,000´s of our atmosphere. I can not convince them that a CO2 rich environment makes plants grow like crazy and produce even more oxygen. They will not listen to any scientific reason or facts that would alter their views and opinions that CO2 is harmful and that man made CO2 is destroying the planet.

They will beat this dead horse until they find a way to force taxpayers to pay for the funeral.

What amazes me is how I am supposed to be afraid of a 1.5 degree temperature change. OK, that is like maybe moving from Dallas to Austin. I am one of many who moved from Michigan to Texas. We saw maybe a 30 degree temperature shift. Now I don´t even notice when it gets above 110. Humans are amazingly adaptable critters.

Its a cycle!

At one time, Michigan was completely covered by glaciers, and will be again. So was Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York, Illinois, Indiana, North Dakota, Iowa, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

Frankly, we are overdue for another Ice Age.

In these modern times we have thermometers everywhere and some, mostly ´scientists", imagine that 100 years ago there were also thermometers everywhere.

Alas, there weren´t. Sure, they had working thermometers but think of the airports around the country in 2014 ~ Fort Myer...... working hard on this ~....... gotta´ be another one eh!

Well, anyway, think of them. That´s where you get your high ticket advanced technology weather measuring devices ~ hygrometers, thermometers, altimeters, barometers, radar, ........... all that stuff.

Bet they were sure busy at all those airports.

Then, there were the vast rural areas over the planet ~ places with roads so rugged it took a year to get in to a village and another year to get outta´ there.

Just stocked to the gills with thermometers. Or so modern scientists think.

Well, there were some STANDARD WEATHER STATIONS around. You´ve probably seen one. It was a wooden stand with a roof. Screen was tacked around the opening where you´d find the scientific instruments ~ an alcohol thermometer, .... and a clipboard right there under the roof where you´d pull it out and record what you saw on what date.

Other scientists would return a month later and record changes.

That was the state of climatology 100 years ago. And today "scientists" use that data from those clipboards just as though it really meant something.

This gets the worst timing award. As of two weeks ago, we already had the 8th snowiest winter on record and that was mid February--we get snow thru April here in Ann Arbor. Tell me about global warming when we´ve had week after week of Polar Vortex/Alberta Clipper (the old name) weather! We set all time records for snow fall, not in 1889 or 1910 but the 07-08 winter (and we weren´t far off in 08-09... stay tuned to see if we have a new record this year!) Doesn´t THAT constitute a trend? The last time I had cross country skis was in the 70s but I´ve been thinking of buying a pair this year; how does that square with ´trends?´
We do far more summer business than winter. Yeah, there are ski slopes but, face it, they´re never going to rank nationally--not with Michigan geography. Meanwhile the beaches and lakes will attract more but the increase in Winter tourism will NOT pay for keeping the roads clear.

Molas Pass in southern Colorado has a sign that shows how deep the glaciers were 150,000 years ago in that spot, leaving only the tippy tips of the peaks in view.

Those glaciers disappeared BEFORE man was driving SUV´s.

99% of all global climate change is the result of the motions of the moon the earth, and the sun.

How can anyone believe otherwise?

Living in the biggest tourism area in the state, I can guarantee you that an increase in temp of 5 degrees would be cause for celebration. I wonder where you get one of those snow guns. If we could all qualify for and get a permit to carry it concealed, maybe we could defend ourselves from global warming...... Idiots, all

BTW , those snow guns have been in use for over 60 years. At least 20 years before the ice age that was predicted in the 70s.

TRENTON — A major credit-rating agency on Wall Street lowered its outlook on New Jersey´s debt from stable to negative today, citing a perfect storm of rising debt, ballooning costs, questionable budgeting practices by Gov. Chris Christie and an economic recovery that has lagged the rest of the country in recent years. In a report to investors, Fitch analysts also panned Christie´s new $34.4 billion budget because, like previous ones, it "relies on one-time measures" instead of stable funding sources and includes only a small cushion of cash reserves, $301 million, to absorb the shock of any unexpected costs.
