Detroit — Two men who broke into a southwest Detroit house early Saturday morning encountered an armed homeowner who opened fire, killing one of the intruders and wounding the other. The incident is the second this week involving a homeowner who used a firearm to fend off intruders. The most recent shooting happened at about 2 a.m. at a home in the 5000 block of Toledo, Detroit Police 3rd Deputy Chief Rodney Johnson said. “After two men broke into the home, one of the suspects attempted to hit the homeowner with a tire-iron,” Johnson said. “A struggle ensued, and the homeowner

Nearly 40 children have been found with guns on school premises over the last three years, a shocking new national survey has disclosed. Figures obtained from police forces across Britain showed guns and air weapons had been confiscated on 37 occasions by officers - including two hand guns. The other guns included 27 ball bearing guns and seven other air weapons. The figures showed almost 1,000 pupils in total were caught by police with weapons in schools including a Taser stun gun, a meat cleaver, three axes and a cut-throat razor. The total is likely to be only the tip

Montgomery, Alabama — Less than three months before the June primary, four Alabama counties had more voters on their rolls than what the Census Bureau says is their voting age population. Officials give a number of reasons for that, including under-counting by the census. Secretary of State Jim Bennett said the discrepancies create opportunity for voting fraud. “Every duplicate name and every bad address is just an opportunity for crooks to attempt to manipulate our elections,” Bennett said. Each county has a three-person board of registrars that is responsible for maintaining the voting lists with help from the secretary of

New York City — A belligerent bus rider who was caught on camera attacking a pair of senior citizens received a taste of street justice from fellow riders, who took him down and tossed him onto a sidewalk. The nearly 2-minute video starts with a straphanger verbally assaulting a woman sitting down in the bus’ priority seating. He goes on an expletive laden, sexually derogatory tirade, gradually moving closer toward the victim. Soon after, a rider with a cane stands up to defend the woman and the attacker pounces, knocking the man’s cane from his hand. That’s when several riders sprang

With the bells of Notre Dame heralding a glorious Easter Sunday morning, a tourist uses a cash point a short stroll from the ancient Paris cathedral. Feeling hands on his back and arms, the middle age man turns around in horror to see the utterly fearless gang casually trying to help themselves to his money. Such scenes have become so common in the French capital that police last week called for the ´systematic eviction´ of Roma.

Police said the boys first struck about 5:15 a.m., confronting a 31-year-old man jogging in the park on the Fifth Ave. side near E. 95th St. The youths, one wielding a small wooden bat, demanded the man´s money, cops said. When the victim resisted, one boy punched him in the face and then took off with the rest of the group, police said. Wichita Falls is still waiting for state approval to begin tapping its supply of treated wastewater, but this city 100 miles northwest of Fort Worth is already thinking about what comes next. If it gets approval to recapture and recycle 5 million gallons of effluent, Wichita Falls believes the city will have about a two year supply of water if the drought doesn’t let up. So that is forcing this city of 104,000 to study where it would go for water if the lake levels at its three reservoirs — Lake Arrowhead, Lake Kickapoo and Lake Kemp — keep dropping.

General Mills Inc., maker of Cheerios and other grocery staples, has reversed a recent change to its online legal policy after an outcry by consumers. The policy had been quietly updated last week to include terms under which any dispute with the company would have to be decided through arbitration, a change first reported by the New York Times last week. Critics and legal experts said the new terms could cost consumers their right to sue in court if they merely "liked" General Mills´ social media pages, downloaded coupons from its website or entered any company-sponsored contests.

The Obama administration is poised to entertain a flood of new clemency applications from thousands of federal prisoners who were given harsh sentences under mandatory-minimum laws following drug convictions, Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday. Holder said in a short videotaped statement that he wants to shrink the federal prison population by a modest amount while ensuring ´that those who have paid their debts have a chance to become productive citizens.´ At the center of the move is a set of old sentencing rules that punished crack-cocaine offenders with more time behind bars than users or traffickers of powder cocaine.

If Jeb reaches for the nomination, there will be a titanic battle between the party establishment and the Tea Party. Steve Schmidt, McCain’s strategist in 2008, insists that in the end Republicans usually settle on the most electable candidate. To get by, this Bush may be forced to trim his positions, although the cautionary tale of Romney suggests that he would have to tack artfully and carefully for the sake of the general election. Certainly he will have the resources to outlast, discredit, and disqualify his rivals.

Washington - Michelle Obama said "splurging is the key to life" if you regularly eat right and stay active. Her biggest guilty pleasure: French fries. "How would you appreciate vegetables if you never had chocolate?" she asked. "You couldn´t live without a little chocolate, a little French fries." The first lady took questions from children reporters Monday after appearing at the White House Easter Egg Roll. She told the children that if they eat right the majority of the time, then a splurge or snack is not going to hurt them. "I still splurge when I can, but that's why I try to exercise almost every day," she said.

There’s a pattern of falsifying statistics throughout the entire Census Bureau. And anyone who attempts to blow the whistle on the fraud is either retaliated against or ignored, according to two new sources who have experienced the process firsthand. As I’ve been writing for more than six months, the Census Bureau office in Philadelphia uncovered a case of fraud in 2010, did nothing about it and allowed the practice to continue. In that instance, a data collector named Julius Buckmon was faking reports that went into the nation’s all-important jobless tally and consumer-inflation survey. Because the Census Bureau’s surveys are scientific — meaning
