Stunning Ice-Covered Great Lakes

A deep freeze has settled in over the Great Lakes this winter and a new image released by NASA shows the astonishing extent of the ice cover as seen from space. NASA´s Aqua satellite captured this image of the lakes on the early afternoon of Feb. 19, 2014. At the time, 80.3 percent of the five lakes were covered in ice, according to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Earlier this month, ice cover over the Great Lakes hit 88 percent for the first time since 1994. Typically at its peak, the

It can´t be! Fake! Fake! Photoshopped!

We´re all supposed to be swimming in the glo-bull-warmed Great Lakes in February! I know that´s true - - because a "climate scientist" told me so.

According to experts, a hard line is north of a red line, but south of the “unbelievably small strikes” that Kerry is fond of. It’s not clear what will happen when the “hard line” is crossed. It may involve… 1. A phone call from John Kerry to anyone in Russia who still takes his calls for laughs warning that Russia is on “the wrong side of history.” 2. Sanctions against the Deputy Under-Governor of Southern Siberia 3. An emergency shipment of 2,000 copies of “Dreams From My Father” to besieged Ukrainian soldiers Secretary of State John Kerry informed a group

What if the missing Malaysia

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — The plane must be somewhere. But the same can be said for Amelia Earhart´s. Ten days after Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared with 239 people aboard, an exhaustive international search has produced no sign of the Boeing 777, raising an unsettling question: What if the airplane is never found? Such an outcome, while considered unlikely by many experts, would certainly torment the families of those missing. It would also flummox the airline industry, which will struggle to learn lessons from the incident if it doesn´t know what happened. While rare nowadays, history is not short of

GENEVA - Russia signaled concern on Wednesday at Estonia´s treatment of its large ethnic Russian minority, comparing language policy in the Baltic state with what it said was a call in Ukraine to prevent the use of Russian. Russia has defended its annexation of Ukraine´s Crimea peninsula by arguing it has the right to protect Russian-speakers outside its borders, so the reference to linguistic tensions in another former Soviet republic comes at a highly sensitive moment. OAKLAND, Calif. — Stuck for 26 months in a grim Iranian prison, Shane Bauer often let his mind drift to the shores of Oakland´s Lake Merritt. He would daydream of jogging around the bustling urban lake on a sunny day. And when he and cellmate Josh Fattal surprised Sarah Shourd, Bauer´s fiancee, with a makeshift birthday celebration in the Tehran prison´s courtyard, they all imagined picnicking together on a lakeside lawn. Now the three University of California, Berkeley, graduates who in 2009 inadvertently hiked from Iraq into the hands of the Iranian military have written an intimate memoir about their

Mrs. Obama will be traveling with three generations. She´ll be joined by Sasha, Malia and her mother, Marian Shields Robinson, a subtle gesture to traditional Chinese values. White House officials are calling this visit a "people to people" trip. In between meetings with university students, the first lady will make stops at the Great Wall of China, the Terracotta Warriors Museum, and even the Chengdu Panda Base. The highly-orchestrated

The southern Indian Ocean, where investigators suspect missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 may have come down, is one place where a commercial airliner can crash without a ship spotting it, a radar plotting it or even a satellite picking it up. The empty expanse of water is one of the most remote places in the world and also one of the deepest, posing potentially enormous challenges for the international search effort now refocusing on the area, one of several possible crash sites. Even Australia, which has island territories in the Indian Ocean and sends rescue planes to pluck stricken yachtsmen

At Obamacare enrollment events around the state, recruitment organizers emphasize the positive reasons for buying coverage on the insurance marketplace, like staying healthy and getting financial assistance to help pay their monthly premiums. But there’s also the punitive side of the law: how much those who don’t enroll will have to pay at tax time next year. The deadline to enroll is coming fast — March 31 — and many people don’t realize they could be paying far more than the $95 flat fee talked about in the early days of the law, according to enrollment counselors, income tax preparation

As Americans have been learning in recent weeks, Russia sometimes has its own way of describing events—like when Vladimir Putin claimed on March 4, despite the presence of Russian troops on the ground, that he hadn’t invaded the Crimean region of east Ukraine. Then there’s the narrative about what is spoken in that invaded country: namely, the Ukrainian language. (Snip) The claim that Ukrainian isn’t a language has been one of the drumbeats of the Russian-Ukrainian relationship for centuries. It’s true that the distinction between a language and a dialect is notoriously slippery, often more about politics than mutual intelligibility

If the justices previously believed it a safe bet that they would be replaced by mainstream liberal justices when they retire, perhaps now they´ll realize their only reasonable course of action is to retire this spring, pending confirmed replacements. The words came out of my mouth before I could stop them. “I feel sorry for Obama,” I said. As my wife looked at me in disbelief, I quickly added a correction. “Well, almost.” Beset by failures at home and abroad, the president cuts a lonely and sad figure these days. His aura of grief reflects his profound loss. His worldview crashed headlong into reality, and reality won. Obamaism is dead, may it rest in peace. That’s sad for him, but hold the tears — his loss is mankind’s hope. If Obama wakes from his utopian visions and faces the

Health industry officials say ObamaCare-related premiums will double in some parts of the country, countering claims recently made by the administration. The expected rate hikes will be announced in the coming months amid an intense election year, when control of the Senate is up for grabs. The sticker shock would likely bolster the GOP’s prospects in November and hamper ObamaCare insurance enrollment efforts in 2015. The industry complaints come less than a week after Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius sought to downplay concerns about rising premiums in the healthcare sector. She told lawmakers rates would increase in 2015 but

Government officials now admit the data system and transponder quit communicating after the pilots said things were OK. That means they didn’t lie. The official Malaysian account of the last contacts made to and received by Flight MH370 is unraveling. As it does, the sinister interpretations of what happened in the cockpit of the Boeing 777 become less persuasive. We return to the all-important timeline. Originally, the Malaysians said that the last words from the cockpit—from the copilot, “All right, good night”—were spoken to air traffic controllers as the airplane left Malaysian air space at 1:30am.
