Baltimore´s people of the woods:
Inside the hidden homeless camps
made of milk crates, wooden doors
and tarps on the outskirts of town

A sheet of plastic laid over a clothesline. A mini-fortress of milk crates stacked under a tree. A thin mattress on a flimsy crate lying in a dark tunnel. On the edge of Baltimore´s woodlands, dozens of the city´s transients live in makeshift homes which they consider safer than homeless shelters. Photographer Ben Marcin has captured some of the shanties in his thought-provoking photo essay, ´The Camps´, documenting the struggle, loneliness and ingenuity of Maryland´s people of the woods. Similar to his Last House Standing series which captured lonely rowhouses around the Mid-Atlantic, Marcin shot the shanties around Baltimore without their

This is an O´Malley Town which can easily be confused with an Obamaville. O´Malley hopes to be in the running for president in 2016. He´s done everything right: supported Obama, supported Obamacare, supported gay marriage, supported raising the minimum wage, and be named to a climate change task force by Obama himself. He´s done everything right, except take care of the people of Maryland.

There are people who prefer to eschew society´s norms and eke an independent existence with next to nothing to their name, and some have turned to makeshift camps in the woods because mental health facilities have been closed down. The photo essay speaks volumes and kindly avoids showing these people in person. Wooded areas near to grocery chains are favored locations - they aren´t just in Maryland they are everywhere.

I´m certain there are people living rough right next to our WalMart. During the day they hang out on the edge of the woods watching - just watching. I know for a fact that there are tent people in the woods adjacent to our library. The library rest rooms are in the lobby, and there are occasionally folk in there washing up that truly don´t appear to have a 4 walls and roof dwelling.

These days I have many ´´there but for the grace of GOD´´ experiences...

Sounds like the powers-that-be got wind of the photos and made sure the camps were destroyed.

This story leaves too much unasked. I want to know how many women live "rough"? How do they protect themselves? How many children live "rough"? Do these "communities" band together at all to protect one another? And if this EVER went mainstream - I have no doubt whatsoever that Obama would point to it and say it is what Bush left us with.

There´s much worse along the entire southern border & ignored for decades. ILLEGALS, smugglers & trafficers have trashed formerly pristine & fragile desert areas with their refuse, -public areas set aside by the U.S.A. as National Parks for the pleasure of the American people, but which now post signs forbidding entrance due to the danger. Nor do ILLEGALS & trafficers have any respect for personal/private property Rights.

I went to college in the Baltimore region. Camps like that have been there for ages. There´s no question that Obama´s policies have severely hurt our economy, but it´s naive to believe these camps just suddenly appeared. It´s no different than when the Kos Kids blamed everything on Bush. Obama is an unmitigated disaster but hyperbole helps nothing.

When I worked for my county’s Socialist Services Dept., I became friends with the woman who ran the homeless outreach programs. She was intelligent, witty, liberal and a Christian. She told me that it was her Christian faith that led her into social work and working with the homeless especially. Within the first year she was no longer a “liberal” after she learned that the long-term homeless choose the lifestyle for many and varied reasons, and the vast majority of the able-minded/body just flat out refuse to partake of our modern world. The best society can do is offer shelters with showers, a meal, and a bed. Its up to them to come, when and if they want.

She found the situation of the “suddenly” homeless family, favored by propagandists during an R administration, are a small percentage of the total homeless population, but the most heartbreaking were the mentally ill people that “progressive” policies prevent receiving care.

She lasted seven years in the job, as did I. Conservative thinking is not allowed in Socialist Services.

Wonder how many camps were destroyed because of his photos. What about winter in the woods ?

Those camps are everywhere. We have what I call a professional homeless couple. Poster children for someone with grant money getting more donations because of them. Came from money, refuse to pay rent-or give up drugs and alcohol. Mega food stamps, self employed, eating lobster and steak in the woods with generators and many of the necessities you have and frequent nice restaurants. Tax free.

The helicopter kicked up a cloud of freshly fallen snow that partly obscured the ground below, but despite the poor visibility, it gently touched down in a landing that was unremarkable except for the fact no one was at the controls. The helicopter, filmed during testing by the Naval Research Laboratory, was piloted by a 100-pound (45-kg) sensor and software package that officials said can turn any rotary-winged aircraft into a virtually autonomous drone able to fly with minimal input from the Marine Corps troops it was designed to serve. WASHINGTON — After months of wincing in the face of negative ads funded by the industrialists David and Charles Koch, Democrats believe they have finally found a way to fight back: attacking the brothers’ sprawling business conglomerate as callous and indifferent to the lives of ordinary people while pursuing profit and power. By drawing public attention to layoffs by subsidiaries of Koch Industries across the country — a chemical plant in North Carolina, an oil refinery in Alaska, a lumber operation in Arkansas — Democrats are seeking to make villains of the reclusive billionaires, whose political organizations have spent more

In the sometimes separate world of public housing, a realistic fear of crime lingers over 400,000 tenants — and it’s getting worse. Many of the working people and elderly who make up the vast majority of New York City Housing Authority residents live in a constant state of hyper-awareness to avoid becoming a victim. Records obtained exclusively by the Daily News reveal that in the last five years, public housing tenants have been battered by a stubbornly resilient spike in crime. NYCHA’s 334 projects saw a 31% spike in major crime to an eight-year high, while the rest of the city

Free Speech: Right after the Supreme Court´s decision to lift limits on campaign contributions, Democrats and their left-wing supporters assaulted the decision as a boon to Republicans, "the party of the rich." This of course is part of a far-wider narrative — slavishly repeated by largely unquestioning liberal media — that the GOP outspends Democrats on campaigns thanks to big-buck donors like the billionaire Koch brothers. But, as it turns out, that´s a lie — as big a lie, in fact, as "you can keep your insurance," "you can keep your doctor" and "ObamaCare will bend the cost curve down."
