Rewriting the Gettysburg Address
New York Times, by Martin P. Johnson

Original Article

Abraham Lincoln did not give the Gettysburg Address on Nov. 19, 1863 — at least, not the one engraved on the Lincoln Memorial, the one memorized by millions the world over. Lincoln actually wrote the words recognized today as the Gettysburg Address months after the cemetery dedication, during a full and complete revision of his speech that he finished in February 1864. Lincoln’s revisions added about 14 percent more words to his original delivery text, the so-called Nicolay Draft, adding several key passages. But no addition was more important than the words “under God”: Lincoln had spoken those words, and others

Thats interesting!

The book Lincoln by David Herbert Donald says something diametrically opposed to this authors position.

The Gettysburg speech was at once the shortest and the most famous oration in American history...the highest emotion reduced to a few poetical phrases. Lincoln himself never even remotely approached it. It is genuinely stupendous. But let us not forget that it is poetry, not logic; beauty, not sense. Think of the argument in it. Put it into the cold words of everyday. The doctrine is simply this: that the Union soldiers who died at Gettysburg sacrificed their lives to the cause of self-determination – that government of the people, by the people, for the people, should not perish from the earth. It is difficult to imagine anything more untrue. The Union soldiers in the battle actually fought against self-determination; it was the Confederates who fought for the right of their people to govern themselves.

I watch a lot of British TV shows and I find it very interesting how they refer to God constantly and sing national songs which praise God and Queen, and pray in sitcoms and TV shows as part of the natural order. Though they are so liberal, no one has the freaking hissy fit the liberals have over here to banish God from everything.

#2 and #3, the speech and the war was about liberty, and whether one group could take God-given liberty from another. The first group did that by defining the second as subhuman or even non-human.

They dressed it up in logical speeches and a memorable Supreme Court decision, but in the end the first group brought such disgrace that it eventually enabled a totally unqualified member of the second group to win and hold the presidency for two terms.

I assume the actual words of the address, as spoken, went out over telegraph wires as soon as he finished delivering them. There was probably more than one newspaper that had a stenographer at every Lincoln address. I highly doubt Johnson´s scholarship on this subject. It would not be the first time the NY Times put out dubious subject matter or even pure fiction disguised as Pulitzer winning "journalism" .

"Or, to cite a better-known example,
take CBS’s botched coverage of George
W. Bush’s military record. The untenable
story relied on memos that were, in the
New York Times´ priceless phrasing, “Fake
But Accurate.” "

Regarding my above comment:

The speech transcribed as spoken. The text taken down in shorthand by Charles Hale of the Boston Advertiser with the comment : ``what Lincoln actually said´´

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new Nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. [Applause.] Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that Nation or any Nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We are met to dedicate a portion of it as the final resting-place of those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men living and dead who struggled here have consecrated it far above our power to add or detract. [Applause.] The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. [Applause.] It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the refinished work that they have thus far so nobly carried on. [Applause.] It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us, that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that the dead shall not have died in vain [applause]; that the nation shall, under God, have a new birth of freedom; and that Governments of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth. [Long-continued applause.]

The pilot of the missing Malaysia Airlines flight was in emotional turmoil over the break-up of his marriage, his family have revealed. Speaking about the mystery for the first time, the wife and daughter of Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah said the 53-year-old pilot had been distracted and withdrawn in the weeks before the aircraft’s disappearance – and refused pleas to attend some marriage counselling sessions. Three weeks after Flight MH370 went missing with 239 crew and passengers aboard, investigators in Malaysia believe that someone – possibly the captain – deliberately steered the Boeing 777 off course after communications were cut.

Deutsch allegedly made the comments on March 7 while he was teaching a gifted social studies class. It was first period. As a story, it doesn’t attain to the level of the worst of the cheesy Biblical movies made in the fifties. Aronofsky broke the first and sacred rule of storytelling: you have to make the audience care. We never cared about Noah even after he was kind to a wounded, half dog – half snake.
