Fed knew about Libor rigging in 2008
Telegraph [UK], by Katherine Rushton

During the 2008 financial crisis, the US Federal Reserve struggled to grasp the scope of the problem and how to adequately respond, transcripts reveal. After a five-year wait, the central bank released the records of a total of 14 meetings from 2008. The transcripts offer the clearest insights yet into the central bank´s thinking during the crisis. "Frankly, I am decidedly confused and very muddled" said former chair Ben Bernanke during a September meeting. Overall, the documents paint a picture of the Fed that shows that it worried perhaps more than it should about inflation risks, and failed to grasp

Churchill´s wish upheld as

A promise made to an ageing Sir Winston Churchill has been honoured after a kitten was given a home at his country estate. For his 88th birthday in 1962, Churchill was given a marmalade cat named Jock after one of his private secretaries, Sir John "Jock" Colville, who gave him the pet. The cat was so dear to the former Prime Minister that it was rumoured that meals would not start until Jock was at the table. He and his family requested that, after his death, there should always be a marmalade cat named Jock with a white bib and four white socks resident at Chartwell in Kent. The National Trust, which was left the property

It is regarded as one of the world´s safest and most popular jets, which comes complete with a range of technologies designed to keep it in touch with air traffic controllers on the ground. Fitted with an ASD-B flight transponder which, unlike the GPS in a car, broadcasts its location by sending information back to air traffic controllers every second, the Boeing 777 would appear to have the necessary technology to prevent it disappearing completely without a trace. Yet early Saturday morning, this is precisely what happened to Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, as it made its way, 35,000 ft in the air,

PASIR PUTEH: Tests on a sample of the oil slick found off the Kelantan coast reveal that it was not from the missing Malaysia Airlines MH370 flight. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) eastern region enforcement chief Datuk Nasir Adam revealed test results showed that it was bunkering activities. "This is information I received from Kuala Lumpur. The oil slick is from bunkering activities and not from an aircraft," said Nasir at the MMEA´s base in Tok Bali here on Monday. Officials at the MH370 operation coordinating centre in Sepang said this was confirmed by the Chemistry Department. On Sunday, MMEA´s

KUALA LUMPUR: One of the two suspects who used stolen passports to board the missing MH370 flight has been identified. Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the man has been identified based on CCTV footage gathered from KLIA. "I can confirm that he is not a Malaysian, but cannot divulge which country he is from yet," said Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar at the Kajang police headquarters yesterday. When asked if both of the men had immigration records of entering the country, Khalid said that they were in the midst of investigating

KUALA LUMPUR--Malaysian officials are poring over CCTV footage and questioning immigration officers and guards at Kuala Lumpur´s international airport, concerned that a security breach may be connected to the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. Suspicions that the Beijing-bound Boeing jet, which vanished on Saturday with 239 people on board, may have been hijacked or bombed have risen after at least two passengers were found to be using stolen passports, though Malaysia´s government stressed it was considering all possibilities. Malaysian investigators, assisted by the FBI, are probing the identities of four passengers in particular, two Malaysian officials with knowledge of

After vacationing at the $2,500 a night Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo this weekend, no wonder Barack and Michelle Obama look pleased with themselves as they returned to Washington on Sunday afternoon. Appearing relaxed after his third vacation of the year, the president has been heavily criticized for his taxpayer-funded trip as the crisis in Ukraine rumbles on. Squeezing in another round of golf on Sunday, the president´s holiday coincided with his Vice President Joe Biden jetting off to the Virgin Islands for the weekend as the White House prepares to welcome Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk for critical

The White House appeared to double down on its policy of engagement with Iran following Wednesday´s dramatic pre-dawn high seas capture of an Iranian missile cache destined for Hamas by Israeli naval commandos. [Snip] White House spokesman Jay Carney said the Israeli weapons interdiction was actually the result of high level intelligence sharing between the US and Israel. State Department spokesman Jen Psaki went even further, claiming it was the US Navy, which she said first identified the frigate, which was planning to interdict the ship itself, but that Israel, "ultimately chose to take the lead."

Debris from the missing Boeing 777 flight is believed to have been found off Vietnam as Interpol investigates whether up to four passengers boarded the plane using stolen passports. A Vietnamese search team has found what they believe is part of a door and an airplane´s tail in the first major breakthrough in the hunt for missing aircraft. The suspected fragments have been located around 50 miles from south-west of Tho Chu Island, the Wall Street Journal reported. Investigators are narrowing the focus of their inquiries on the possibility that the plane disintegrated in mid-flight, a senior source said on Sunday

It was midnight in the Kremlin and Vladimir Putin was watching himself in the mirror as he toned his glistening pecs. “Pretty buff,” he thought. Behind him on the desk were a slew of headlines from the Western press--and they were very satisfactory. “Putin calls West’s bluff”, read one. “Obama--what a pussy”, said an American tabloid. “Putin brings back USSR”; “A Tsar is Born!” and so on. A thin smile passed across the lips of the former KGB man. Yes, he was summoning up the spirit of the former Soviet Union, the spirit of--Stalin himself! Just then there was a

Interpol has heavily criticised Thailand´s lax airport security after it emerged at least two passengers boarded the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH307 with stolen passports. The international police force said at no point were the passports checked against its lost and stolen database. Had these checks been carried out it would have come to light that two passengers were travelling on two passports stolen in separate incidents over the last two years. Luigi Maraldi, 27, the owner of one of the passports, was listed as the sole Italian national on the missing flight. This afternoon he told how the document was stolen while

Is Mitt Romney getting the band back together? The 2012 Republican presidential nominee has invited his debate prep advisers and senior campaign aides to his mountaintop chalet in Park City, Utah, for a weekend of skiing later this month, according to two people close to Romney. The reunion of Romney´s political brain trust comes amid a burst of positive buzz about the former Massachusetts governor -- from favorable reviews of "MITT," the Netflix documentary about his campaigns, to chatter among some powerful GOP donors about another Romney presidential campaign in 2016.

The most dangerous parts of a flight are takeoff and landing. Rarely do incidents happen when a plane is cruising seven miles above the earth. So the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jet well into its flight Saturday morning over the South China Sea has led aviation experts to assume that whatever happened was quick and left the pilots no time to place a distress call. (Snip) The problem had to be big enough, he said, to stop the plane´s transponder from broadcasting its location, although the transponder can be purposely shut off from the cockpit.

CBS News investigative correspondent Sharyl Attkisson has reached an agreement to resign from CBS News ahead of contract, bringing an end to months of hard-fought negotiations, sources familiar with her departure told POLITICO on Monday. Attkisson, who has been with CBS News for two decades, had grown frustrated with what she saw as the network´s liberal bias, an outsized influence by the network´s corporate partners and a lack of dedication to investigative reporting, several sources said. She increasingly felt like her work was no longer supported and that it was a struggle to get her reporting on air.
