Arizona Legislature OKs religion

The Arizona Legislature has passed a controversial religion bill that is again thrusting Arizona into the national spotlight in a debate over discrimination. House Bill 2153, written by the conservative advocacy group Center for Arizona Policy and the Christian legal organization Alliance Defending Freedom, would allow individuals to use religious beliefs as a defense against a lawsuit. The bill, which was introduced last month and has been described by opponents as discriminatory against gays and lesbians, has drawn national media coverage. Discussion of the bill went viral on social media during the House floor debate Thursday. Opponents have dubbed it

Sooooo...if my neighbor decides to kill my dog because his religion teaches that the animal is "unclean" then would I have any recourse? What if my someone decides that his religious beliefs entitle him to marry his 12-year-old niece? Where are we then? This is the thin edge of the wedge.

To me, there´s a difference between being forced to personally participate in something that´s against my religious beliefs and denying the same-sex couple access to a business or service.

Forcing me to photograph your wedding is like forcing me to kneel down and worship your golden calf.

This bill offers defense against a discrimination law suit when you refuse to provide a service for religious reasons. So a Hindu animal control officer might use this defense if he refused to put down a stray white elephant, but regularly put down stray dog and cats that no one had come to rescue.

If the gay couples weren´t acting like bullies and suing people for refusing to go against their religious convictions, the bill wouldn´t be necessary.

Tourism is one of Arizona´s major industries. They are already suffering from perceptions that the entire state is unsafe because of their border with Mexico. This law will simply add to those problems.

An Alabama statehouse abortion debate Tuesday moved from the realm of reproductive rights to race when one Democratic representative said the state’s Republican lawmakers would make “their daughter have an abortion” if she were impregnated by a black man. The shocking comments from Rep. Alvin Holmes (D-Montgomery) came shortly after Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin (R-Indian Springs) compared her bill to restrict abortions to the landmark Supreme Court case Brown vs. Board of Education, which ended in 1954 the legal segregation of public schools, The Birmingham News reported. The state’s House ultimately passed the bill, written by McClurkin, to prohibit abortions

China´s president, Xi Jinping, has called for "all-out efforts" to bring to justice the black-clad assailants who killed 29 people with knives and machetes in a bloody terror attack in the south-western city of Kunming on Saturday night. Officials blamed Xinjiang separatists for the frenzied violence at a crowded train station. Witnesses described fleeing in fear as the assailants hacked at people apparently at random. Graphic photographs of the aftermath showed bodies lying in pools of blood. One of the 130 survivors injured in the incident described fleeing in terror as a man lashed out with a long knife, nicking

A vital piece of land on the Black Sea that´s been claimed by some of the world´s great empires, Crimea is no stranger to conflict. The peninsula has been sacked by Huns, Greeks, Turks and Mongols. It was part of the Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan and later the Ottoman Empire before it was absorbed by the Russian Empire under Catherine the Great in 1783. Perhaps its bloodiest chapter came between 1853 and 1856 during the Crimean War. An estimated 750,000 people died as Russia fought the Ottoman Empire in a conflict that also involved France, Britain and Sardinia. The

This week, controversy has broken out over Arizona’s law protecting the right of religious businessowners to reject service to particular customers. The law came hard on the heels of a series of outrageous court decisions finding that private businesses could be forced, in violation of their religion, to serve events such as same-sex weddings. Cowardly Republicans including former presidential candidates Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) have been running headlong from the law, suggesting that it is somehow granting the moral okay to discrimination to recognize Americans’ First Amendment rights.

As anyone who takes the trouble to consult the text of the legislation will readily discover, SB 1062 does not mention, much less single out, gays or same-sex ceremonies. As Douglas Laycock (who supports redefining marriage to include same-sex couples) and other leading religious-liberty scholars explain in a letter to Arizona governor Jan Brewer, SB 1062 “has been egregiously misrepresented by many of its critics.” What the legislation would do is amend Arizona’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act “to address two ambiguities that have been the subject

DCFS added that 25 more people were going to be disqualified as well. On October 11-12, in Springhill and Mansfield, Louisiana, cards indicated they had no spending limits, and more than 12,000 people took advantage to overspend. At Chipotle, guacamole costs extra - but it soon may not be available at all thanks to climate change. The Denver, Colorado-based chain of Mexican fast-food restaurants threatened to take the condiment off the menu because of the rising price of avocados. While the avocado crop is currently fine, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are predicting drier temperatures will lead to a 40 per cent drop in California´s avocado crop over the next 32 years. Most modern scientists agree that there is a direct correlation between the increase of droughts and global warming, according to Think Progress.
