The Lesson of Dunkirk
American Spectator, by Thomas Sowell

Original Article

Politics is often like war. Unfortunately, politicians, the media and the voting public seldom have the same degree of realism and discipline with which professional soldiers fight wars. You can indulge your emotions and base your decisions on wishful thinking in politics, in a way that you are not likely to when your own life is on the line in battle. One of the most dramatic and heartening events of World War II was the miraculous evacuation of British troops trapped on the beaches of France in 1940, at Dunkirk. And its lesson is still relevant today. The British troops were in

Two thumbs up for Dr. Sowell and Steve McCann.

#2, anybody who thinks this is 1776 is delusional. The weaponry of that era was fairly symmetric - everybody had pretty much the same. Hardly the case today. Government probably "out-arms" any dissatisfied group 10,000 to 1, perhaps even much more. If you doubt, check with David Koresh.

I disagree with the brilliant Dr. Sowell. The lesson of Dunkirk to me is that the British fought until nearly pushed into the sea. Churchill cautiously advised “We must be very careful not to assign to this deliverance the attributes of a victory. Wars are not won by evacuations." The GOP put up no fight at all it wasn´t an evacuation it was surrender. If the elites GOP and Rinos had been in charge at Dunkirk they would have surrendered to the Germans. Speaker Boner has surrendered to the Democrats Period!

The comparison ought not to be the emergency evacuation of the British in the face of disaster, but rather the ignominious collapse of the French.

At Dunkirk, the supposedly formidable French army collapsed before the onslaught of the Germans, leaving the British stranded on the beach. In the House, the supposedly majority, establishment Republicans collapsed, leaving the Tea Party conservatives (and the American Republic) stranded...

Sowell writes a good article well reasoned but wrong. You need another battle to get your lesson from where the Germans have your small army cornered and about to drive them over a cliff with no possibility of rescue where you fight or die. There is no future in this irresponsible debt and spending but a collapse of the financial system and the currency that harms everyone. We need leaders who can explain this! Sowell says that we will loose this battle when Obama inevitably calls their bluff with ANY condition on the debt ceiling increase. How can he know this when it has not been tried? Even the beneficiaries of Obama´s wealth redistribution will be ruined. Explain it, Fight for it. If you loose a battle along the way keep fighting. At least then you won´t get all the blame when the inevitable collapse comes. As it is now Obama with the complicit media will pin the blame for the collapse he causes on the mute republicans because of their obstructionism - which they did not do! I rate this "lesson of Dunkirk" an argument for defeatism!

Yes, all may be true, but it speaks to another time and place when America had a backbone. Recent GOP strategy might be admirable until you realize the Low-Ts have been surrendering since 1995.

When victory in January 1995 was new the newly-elected Senate Majority Leader, Trent Lott, from Mississippi began the surrender as he was setting his committees and gave the howling Democrats way more representation than their numbers actually deserved. From then on to now, the Low-Ts have been backing up and making excuses instead of moving forward.

Surrender thy name is Republican and it has a long history. We need new leadership who won´t look at the future, cringe and decide now is not the time to try to win.

One has to recognize the real Dunkirk. How much longer will the financial system support the insane spending of the Federal government? I am now convinced the real Dunkirk will be the collapse of the economy. But at that point there will be no small craft to save American families. Sowell is a fool. I can hear the toilet flushing our future down the drain.

Vatican City - Pope Francis confessed Thursday that he took the rosary cross of his late confessor from his casket and wears it to this day in a fabric pouch under his cassock. He said he did so telling the late priest, "Give me half your mercy." Francis made the revelation Thursday during an informal chat with Roman priests about the need to be merciful to their flocks. He told the story of the "great confessor" of Buenos Aires who had heard confessions from most of the diocesan priests as well as from Pope John Paul II when he visited Argentina. When

The new health insurance marketplaces appear to be making little headway in signing up Americans who lack insurance, the Affordable Care Act’s central goal, according to a pair of new surveys. Only one in 10 uninsured people who qualify for private plans through the new marketplaces enrolled as of last month, one of the surveys shows. The other found that about half of uninsured adults have looked for information on the online exchanges or planned to look. The snapshots from the surveys released Thursday provide preliminary answers to what has been one of the biggest mysteries since HealthCare.gov and separate state

New school lunch standards implemented as a result of First Lady Michelle Obama’s anti-obesity campaign have led to more than 1 million children leaving the lunch line, according to a new report. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a wide-ranging audit of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act nutrition standards last week, finding 48 out of 50 states faced challenges complying with Mrs. Obama’s Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act. The new standards led to kids throwing out their fruits and vegetables, student boycotts, higher lunch costs, and odd food pairings such as “cheese stick with shrimp” in order for schools to comply with the

In Fiscal Year 2013, the official federal deficit was $680 billion. Liberals have cheered this drop while subsequently ignoring how this deficit is both larger than all of Bush’s pre-recession deficits and is expected to grow dramatically over the next several decades. However, the Treasury Department’s annual report on the finances of the U.S. federal government shows that not only is $680 billion an incomplete measure of the federal government’s finances, it’s off by nearly a factor of five. From Just Facts Daily: The U.S. Treasury has just released its annual “Financial Report of the United States Government,” which provides an account of

Why the Tea Party’s Waning, Not Winning

As the Tea Party celebrates its five-year anniversary, many commentators are asking whether the grassroots anti–Big Government movement is still relevant. In some ways, this seems a silly question. The Tea Party has been enormously successful in changing the terms of the national debate on issues such as debt and spending. And, while its favored candidates have suffered some high-profile defeats, it has also won important victories. The Republican midterm sweep of 2010 would not have been possible without its energy and enthusiasm. Yet it’s also true that the Tea Party’s clout is waning. According to the most recent Gallup poll, just

Issa began the hearing by explaining that Lerner previously waived her Fifth Amendment rights in a May 2013 hearing and that “the

Where Lois Lerner goes, drama follows. On Wednesday, the former IRS officer again invoked the Fifth before the House Oversight Committee. That precipitated a heated exchange between the committee’s Republican chairman, Darrell Issa, and Democratic ranking member Elijah Cummings, who called the hearings “un-American.” And that spat has become the story. No doubt that is exactly what Cummings had in mind. Because it distracts attention from the substance of the hearings — and from the questions raised by e-mails and public remarks Lois Lerner wrote, received or made when she was IRS Director of Tax Exempt Organizations.
