Clashes have been underway since early this morning in Kiev´s Independence Square. So far, more than 21 protesters are believed to have been killed, according to a Reuters photographer who counted bodies in the square. The Telegraph´s correspondents on the ground--Roland Oliphant and David Blair--have seen ten bodies laid out on a pavement, a number of which displayed single bullet wounds to the head. Protesters believe the victims have been killed by sniper attacks. Storms, floods and now an EARTHQUAKE!
South West rocked by biggest
UK tremor in six years
Daily Express [UK], by Jane Mathews    Original Article

An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale has rocked the north Devon coast, shaking buildings and sending tremors across England and Wales. The quake, which is the largest to hit the country in six years, struck just after 1.20pm this afternoon, and shook the ground for 20 seconds. [Snip] The British Geological Survey (BGS) said residents reported their houses rocking and others have described the quake as "frightening". But others likened the quake, which originated around three miles beneath the Bristol Channel, to a "heavy truck going up the road". Tremors were felt in areas including Dartmoor, Bristol, Taunton,

At least 27 people are dead--one of them was decapitated--and hundreds are injured. One man was shot through the eye as police snipers apparently targeted the heads and chests of protesters from city rooftops. On the ground, heavily armed riot police brandished Kalashnikovs and launched stun grenades against pro-democracy demonstrators who had taken up arms, anything from bricks and bottles to pistols and shotguns. And all the time, flames soared into the sky from the city’s central square. What has been happening in Kiev, capital of Ukraine, before the truce late last night could not be further removed from the harmonious atmosphere of

Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in 1938 famously warned the nation about the dangers of Czechoslovakia rejecting Herr Hitler’s territorial demands: How horrible, fantastic, incredible it is that we should be digging trenches and trying on gas-masks here because of a quarrel in a faraway country between people of whom we know nothing! Today even with all the babbling global connectivity we today take for granted, it’s safe to say that the overwhelming mass of British people really do know next to nothing about Ukraine. [Snip] There are good reasons for this. Ukraine was never an independent state in the modern

French President François Hollande must now pay the price for kowtowing to the contraction polices of the eurozone. His country is sliding into deflation. French prices fell 0.6pc in January from a month earlier, and would have fallen even further without one-off tax rises. Manufactured goods fell 3pc, and clothing fell 15.4pc as retailers slashed prices to offload stock. France´s core prices have been dropping for months, even if the core CPI index is still just positive at 0.1pc on a year-to-year basis. This outcome is exactly what the Observatoire Economique predicted a year ago would happen under the eurozone´s

Recently, a friend of mine purchased a small quantity of Iranian saffron from a Birmingham merchant for £30 over the internet. This transaction was legal according to British and international law. It did not contravene any United Nations resolution. He transferred the funds via PayPal, the international payments firm. The money was paid in pounds sterling. What happened next was outrageous. PayPal sent him a menacing email informing him that he was in breach of US law, and asked him to sign a form admitting that he had behaved illegally. At this point my friend rang me in alarm. U.S. consumer debt spikes at rate not

Americans are taking on debt at a rate not seen since just before the country spiraled into the Great Recession. Federal Reserve Bank of New York data out Tuesday indicates that consumers have slowly loosened their belts since the dark days of the recession began in ´07. But the stunningly high rate at which borrowing has risen in recent months, and the nation´s history debt-driven economic downturn, leave room to worry the data could spell impending disaster. Total consumer debt rose 2.1 percent to $11.52 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2013 from $11.28 trillion in the third quarter, the New York

The European Union raised the spectre of sanctions against Ukraine´s leaders after the death toll from the latest outbreak of street violence rose to 25, following a night of fighting which police made territorial advances in Kiev´s Independence Square. The EU called an emergency meeting of the bloc´s foreign ministers for Thursday to discuss the violence, Jose Manuel Barroso, the European Commission president saying he expected "targeted measures against those responsible for violence and use of excessive force". Barack Obama has penned a handwritten apology to an angry professor after suggesting that learning a trade would be a better career choice than studying for an art history degree. During a speech at a General Electric plant in Wisconsin, the President said that ´folks can make a lot more potentially with skilled manufacturing or the trades than they might with an art history degree.´ He was inundated with letters from art historians and journalists all furious at his remarks - but one professor´s comments caught his eye - and he sent a handwritten apology to her.

MOA stands for Muslims of the Americas, which is linked to radical Pakistani Muslim cleric Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani. WASHINGTON, D.C., February 17, 2014 – President Barack Obama has elevated the right to have sex with a member of the same sex to the level of universal “fundamental freedoms” in a new presidential statement criticizing Uganda. But critics say his promotion of homosexuality in a continent that overwhelmingly opposes that behavior amounts to a form of liberal “cultural imperialism.” Obama wrote on Sunday that he opposed a proposed bill in Uganda that would criminalize same-sex “marriages” and impose life imprisonment for repeated homosexual acts, among other provisions, because “as a country and a people, the United States has consistently

Sarah Palin has made an endorsement in Texas. She’s backing tea party leader Katrina Pierson over Rep. Pete Sessions. In a Facebook post, Palin notes that Pierson’s “life’s story is full of hardships she has fought to overcome, which taught her firsthand the importance of self-reliance, hard work, and the blessings of liberty.” One of those hardships includes a 1997 arrest for shoplifting. As the Dallas Morning News reported on Valentine’s Day, “In 1997, five days before her 21st birthday, Katrina Pierson, then named Katrina Lanette Shaddix, was arrested on a charge of theft of greater than $50 and less than $500.” Pierson,

Foreign Policy: John Kerry calls global warming "the world´s most fearsome weapon of mass destruction." Has the secretary of state forgotten the world´s real WMDs? Or is he just off his medication? There´s a long list of Cabinet secretaries and senior aides to President Obama who have failed the nation so resoundingly they should be shown the door. But Secretary John Kerry, who dumped his military decorations in 1971 and was dumped by voters as a presidential candidate in 2004, should definitely be the first one out. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-Ky.) are now in position to end the Tea Party’s death grip on the Republican Party’s political future. Last week, Boehner and McConnell faced down the Tea Party’s threat to cripple the government when they supported raising the nation’s debt ceiling. That move prevented GOP political suicide. If the nation’s credit rating, stocks and the recovery went down the sewer because of Republicans’ refusal to raise the debt ceiling, the GOP’s chances in the midterm elections would have been severely damaged. Having successfully defied the Tea Party on the debt ceiling, now

He argued that Americans support raising the minimum wage because it will lift "struggling" families out of poverty: "But they also know what it´s like to see a friend, a neighbor, where one spouse goes back to work, who would prefer maybe not to work. Maybe they´re working part-time just to supplement the family´s income. And they think, if that
