Prince William´s smashingly bad idea
Los Angeles Times, by Patt Morrison

Original Article

You’d think someone whose very life and livelihood are all about history would be a little more mindful of it – even the bad bits. Of all people, Prince William, the heir presumptive to the British throne, should know something about the dangers of forgetting history, accidentally or deliberately. And yet, in his passion for the deeply, harrowingly important cause of ending the killing of animals for the ivory trade, he wants to get rid of the evidence of the crimes he wishes to expose. HRH the Duke of Cambridge told primatologist Jane Goodall that he would like to smash every one of

As I said the other day...Her Majesty was NOT amused.

While I applaud your efforts to protect elephants and rhinos, get a grip and try to fall a bit farther from the tree, yes?

Not having heard Prince William or Jane Goodall or their official spokespeople speak publicly about this alleged comment, I´m going to give William a break until and unless there´s concrete evidence that he uttered those exact words and meant exactly what he said.

How often have we said we´d like to see [fill in the blank] drop dead? Did we really mean it, did we want to commit an act to destroy that person, or was it just blurted out in a fit of anger? Unlike most of us, William has traveled to elephant refuges and seen the bodies of elephants (minus the poached tusks) rotting in the heat, often with a baby elephant dead from starvation beside its mother. I´d be aggrieved too when I saw reminders of such a dreadful business.

He might have meant what he said but until we get clarification from a reputable source, let´s not take as gospel something passed on third (or fourth?) hand.

We can only hope that his quote was taken out of context or a kind of off the cuff remark. If not, I have to take back my idea that the newer generation of royals are a bit smarter than the previous one. Because we all know his father is a blooming idiot. Guess this really is a good reason to abolish royality....even if they are fun to watch at times.

I hope he was quoted correctly. For the royals to have this ivory as allegedly ´treasured´ objects in the face of the depraved hunt for it, is grotesque.

When William becomes king, he should destroy all the royal ivory, live on worldwide TV, along with video of the gory, cruel mutilation of these animals, as part of a broadcast to raise worldwide awareness and revulsion over this practice. It would be the beginning of a movement to shame the buyers of ivory. It´s only by eliminating demand that the poaching can be stopped. Such a broadcast would be like Food Aid, or Farm Aid, getting the British out of India, getting the British out of the Untied Staes of America, and the anti-apartheid campaign. Unlike with Britain and South Africa, it´s possible that today´s buyers of ivory can´t be shamed. But they can be made into pariahs. Further these buyers are not countries, so you can´t implement sanctions against them as was done with South Africa.

Tucking your ivory away out of view is only a precious acknowledgment of one´s shame in owning it.

1972. That´s the year that using ivory was made illegal. Piano keys? There are ways to tell if yours are ivory, plastic or some earlier form of plastic. Check it out on your own, but if your piano is in some foreign country, they could strip your keys away. Ever play a piano with missing keys? (Bugs Bunny cartoons come to mind.)

While he´s at it, he should throw in the Crown Jewels too. No telling how many blood diamonds mined by enslaved women and children there are in there. And he must rid galleries of all the hunting themed paintings, especially ones featuring elephants. And burn all of the books about hunting too. They may encourage people. And he should outlaw circuses! And zoos! And he should do a national screening of Babar for all British schoolchildren!

Yes, it’s a bit early to talk about the 2016 election. It’s just too much fun not to do it. You’re welcome. With about 20 months to go before the Iowa precinct caucuses, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul lead the pack for the Republican presidential nomination. Meanwhile, former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton continues to hold a huge lead among Democrats, according to a Fox News poll released Wednesday. Three possible GOP candidates capture double-digit support among self-identified Republicans: Christie receives 15 percent, which puts him just ahead of Bush and

Washington -- Louisiana Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu is in the middle of a storm. She is beset by well-funded forces on the right who sense the Gulf Coast Democrat´s vulnerability in trying to defend a Senate seat in a red state. On the left, she is trying to avoid being pulled down by the undertow of a president whose decline in approval ratings and controversial health care reform law might not play well with her state´s conservative sensibilities. She´s been buffeted by rough re-election fights before, and in previous successful bids for the state legislature, state treasurer´s office and eventually

Tax day is here—and some people will pay more this year because of Obamacare. The law´s biggest tax provision—billions of dollars in tax credits to help people cover the cost of their premiums—is already in effect, but doesn´t affect the taxes due on Tuesday. A handful of smaller provisions, mostly affecting wealthy households, will show up for the first time in this year´s filing. Among this year´s changes: a 0.9 percent increase in Medicare taxes and a 3.8 percent surtax on investment income. Both are limited to high-income taxpayers, and both took effect for the first time in the tax season that

Fish are losing their survival instinct as the world´s oceans become more acidic because of climate change, researchers have claimed. The study confirms laboratory experiments showing that the behavior of reef fishes can be seriously affected by increased carbon dioxide concentrations in the ocean. Carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere is absorbed into ocean waters, where it dissolves and lowers the pH of the water. The new study is the first to analyze the sensory impairment of fish from CO2 seeps, where pH is similar to what climate models forecast for surface waters by the turn of the century. ´These results verify our laboratory
