Restaurant´s healthcare surcharge
draws strong responses

Los Angeles Times, by Steve Lopez

Original Article

Posted By:JoniTx, 2/19/2014 1:17:31 PM

I had breakfast at Republique on La Brea Avenue on Tuesday, and here´s how the tab broke down: Cafe Americano — $3.25 ~Quiche — $5~Tax — 0.77~ Surcharge Healthy LA — 0.25 ~The last item is the one creating a little controversy at the new high-end restaurant in the old Campanile space. The owners are adding a 3% fee to every bill, which they say will pay for healthcare insurance for all their employees, from hostesses and bartenders to dishwashers and potato peelers.

$3.25 for a cup of joe and he´s whining about a $0.25 tax that his lord and masters put in place?

Man, this guy isn´t the sharpest knife in the drawer, is he?

It is NOT MY responsibility to pay healthcare costs for YOUR employees. As an employer it would be YOUR job to do that.

Why are people bitching because part of the owner´s overhead is because of Obama imposed regulations. Great way to let LoFos know how much govt costs them.

My cellphone bill is $39.95 but Verizon itemizes the government imposed taxes, surcharges, and fees.
That way, I know how much of my $53 bill goes to Verizon and how much goes to Caesar.

Sounds like owner needs to raise his prices by 3% and just not mention why. If it´s so offensive. Does anyone think prices (of anything at allDON´T include the cost of health care for companies that) provide it?

If only everything we bought broke out the percentage that is taxes. Gasoline? Cell phones? Our home electric bill?

You´d find out that in addition to our income taxes and property taxes, a huge amount of our so-called discretionary spending also goes to taxes. I once read an account of one family´s spending, and it turned out this average, middle-income family, was paying far more than 50% of income when all taxes were counted.

This is an upmarket cafe in an upmarket neighborhood. They have a choice to not patronize the place. Ironically they are the ones who most likely voted twice for Obama and think everything about him and his policies is ´way cool. Until it hits them in black and white.

More about Republique´s owner:

Growing up as a child in San Diego, Walter Manzke learned the ways of seasonal cuisine and sustainability at a young age. The family table was filled with organic, farm-fresh vegetables and fruits from the vast orchards and gardens surrounding his home. This seasonable, sustainable approach to eating, now popularized in the farm-to-table ethos, is a way of thought that Manzke has carried with him throughout his culinary career.

Health care taxes should only be paid by registered democrats, since it is they who voted for the progressive communist`s that mandated this catastrophe. They wanted it, let them pay for ALL of us who didn`t want it but are ´forced´ to use it.

Since the tip is probably also for "all their employees, from hostesses and bartenders to dishwashers and potato peelers´´, reduce the intended tip by the same amount. Especially as "Republique servers can make as much as $70,000 to $80,000 a year". Since it turns out that the tip goes only to ´table staff´´, the health tax goes to, well everyone, as the article states. (thus a little income shifting from the well-off waiters to the long-suffering potato-peelers.)

Poster # 3 makes the point that it is the responsibility of the employer to pay for his employees healthcare costs. He´s right. Now that Obamacare was forced upon us by the DEMOCRATS employers are mandated to pay for employee healthcare under certain circumstances. Where does RayLRiv think the employer is going to get the money to pay for these additional costs? The government? In order to stay in business the employer must pass those healthcare costs on to his customers. Think RayLRiv, think!

Just add 3% on to every menu item price and re-print the menus. Problem solved. What you don´t know won´t hurt you. $5 for a slice of quiche? I can make two quiche´s at home for $5. Why go out to eat anyway. I can´t afford it anymore. My dining out is on the dollar menu at Mickey Dee´s. I love the mcdouble cheeseburgers with secret sauce instead of ketchup and mustard, and add lettuce pickle and onions. Just like a Big Mac at less than half the price. In this country we still have choices. Not as much as we used to, but still I can choose to pay through the nose for something or keep on walking.

#3, if you don´t think the costs of ObamaCare aren´t going to be passed on to all of us you are mistaken.

Every single little thing you buy will cost you more because of ObamaCare. Then, you are going to be told you don´t give enough to Uncle Sam and they are going to take more.

Then you are going to be forced to pay more for your healthcare because your neighbor is on ObamaCare and his insurance isn´t fair...

Not that I disagree with this restaurant´s apparent sentiments, but in this case just raise the prices to make up for increased healthcare costs.

Is Scott Walker on his way to

Scott Walker has a 16 point lead (56-40) among likely voters in his race for governor, according to a poll from Wisconsin Public Radio/St. Norbert’s. Among registered voters, his lead is essentially the same (55-40). The survey was conducted between March 24 and April 3. A Marquette University survey conducted between March 20-23 also showed Walker with a nice, though smaller, lead. In that poll, Walker outdistanced Democrat Mary Burke 48-41. Revealingly, Walker fares well in an electorate that does not seem particularly conservative and that, if anything, appears to be slightly to the left of American voters in general.

Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)
