Director of national intelligence:
Phone surveillance would not have
been ´shocking´ if the NSA had come
clean with the public soon after 9/11

Daily Mail [UK], by David Martosko

Original Article

Posted By:Attercliffe, 2/19/2014 5:47:01 AM

The White House´s director of national intelligence admitted on Monday that the National Security Agency and other federal government departments should have been transparent with the American people when it first began collecting a broad swath of phone records. James Clapper mused openly about how the PRISM program, authorized by Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act, was received by global media and the American public, conceding that the scandalous outcome would likely have been different if the government had been less secretive. ´I probably shouldn’t say this, but I will,´ Clapper told The Daily Beast.

Comments:
Basically, this translates to:

It´s Bush´s fault.

No it´s not. We knew shortly after 9/11 that things would change, that our privacy wouldn´t be as private. What we didn´t know is that the Obama administration would abuse that Patriot Act and, e.g., spy on the Tea Party and others who dared to point to serious invasions of privacy for purely political reasons.

By the way, Clapper. If you really shouldn´t say something, don´t say it.

Syria´s disarmament deal is coming apart.
Will Obama lower the bar for success?

The landmark deal to destroy Syria’s arsenal of chemical weapons is in deep trouble. Under the agreed timetable, all of the most dangerous “priority 1” chemicals should have been shipped out of the country by December 31 last year. In fact, barely 11 percent--or 77 tons out of 700--has actually been removed. The total destruction of Syria’s chemical warfare capability is supposed to be complete by June 30. It’s already pretty clear that this won’t be possible--“without a shadow of a doubt”, according to Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, formerly the commander of Britain’s defences against chemical and biological weapons.

Obama´s minimum wage hike will cost

The White House may have to scrap its plans to aggressively promote a 40 percent national minimum wage hike now that the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found that the move would likely cost the U.S. 500,000 jobs by the second half of 2016. The CBO´s report, released Tuesday afternoon, also estimated that it would pull 900,000 low-income Americans above the federal government´s poverty line. The White House didn´t answer questions about whether that trade-off is acceptable to President Obama, but Senate Democrats have pushed hard for legislation that would implement his goal of driving the minimum wage far above its current

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told reporters on Monday that there is ´absolutely no evidence´ that the United States will lose jobs as a consequence of implementing the Affordable Care Act. But the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office declared on February 4 that the Obamacare law would suck the equivalent of 2.5 million full-time jobs out of the U.S. economy by 2024. ´There is absolutely no evidence, and every economist will tell you this, that there is any job loss related to the Affordable Care Act,´ Sebelius insisted Monday in Florida. ´Part-time positions are actually down since 2010, not up,´ she

Residents of Oklahoma were left feeling rattled over the weekend after a strong of some 20 earthquakes as powerful as 3.5 magnitude rocked the central part of the state on Saturday alone. Areas north of Oklahoma City felt the brunt of the temblors, which some say were accompanied by startling booms like the sound of an explosion. The mystery earthquake wave now has residents fearing for their personal safety and the security of their property. Meanwhile, scientists have been left scratching their heads over the quakes, which are becoming more frequent each day. ´Felt like bombs going off. It´s just a huge

In the epic 1982 swords-and-sorcery film Conan the Barbarian, when the massively muscled hero is asked what is best in life, he memorably decrees: “To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.” Conan, like Game of Thrones (its modern progeny), is set in a fictional age, but the saga’s look and feel is a hundred per cent Dark Ages Europe. Dwayne Stovall wants Texans to know that U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell ´looks and fights like a turtle,´ and he hopes that image will bleed over to Republican Sen. John Cornyn – the man whose job he wants. ´We Texans don´t need a Beltway turtle telling us how to fight,´ Stovall says in his newest video ad. The slight is related to what Stovall sees as a lack of action from Cornyn, the state´s senior senator and the Senate Minority Whip, to block elements of the Affordable Care Act. Fury erupted last night after it emerged the elderly could be denied vital drugs under new funding rules. Older patients would effectively be written off on the grounds that they no longer make a big enough financial contribution to society. The Department of Health is demanding the changes in an attempt to cut the crippling NHS medicines bill. But Katherine Murphy, chief executive of the Patients’ Association, called the plans “disturbing and discriminatory”, adding: “Human life cannot be assessed in terms of cost and benefit.” The Daily Express, which is crusading for Respect For The Elderly, revealed earlier this month

Nancy Reagan was the only modern first lady judged less trustworthy than Mrs. Clinton. ´Trustworthiness was never the Clintons´ long suit,´ University of Virginia Center for Politics Director Larry Sabato told MailOnline. The Siena Polling Institute has conducted the survey five times since 1982, with Clinton debuting

There´s a debate going on about Hillary Clinton´s past. If she runs for president in 2016, should Republicans reach back to the scandals of her years as First Lady? Or should they focus on more recent times, especially her tenure as Secretary of State, to build a case against her? The GOP doesn´t have to choose. Of course Clinton´s recent experiences are relevant to a presidential run. But so are her actions in the 90s, the 80s and even the 70s. It´s not ancient history; it reveals something about who Clinton was and still is. And re-examining her past is entirely consistent with practices in recent campaigns. In the 2012 presidential race,

America’s Founding Fathers fiercely held to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—values which Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) claimed align seamlessly with Obamacare. Pelosi explained why the law is “very sound policy” during a press conference Friday: To go to back to our founders once again, they sacrificed it all for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This law, the affordable care act, is about a healthier life, the liberty to pursue your happiness. That is solid policy, and the mandate is central to that. This argument should be added to the montage of lies being promulgated by the Obama

The weirdest thing about John Kerry´s weekend speech on climate-change—other than the fact that this is the same guy who in 1997 voted to forbid the U.S. from signing the Kyoto Protocol—is that it begins by quoting something Maurice Strong said at the U.N.´s 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro: "Every bit of evidence I´ve seen persuades me that we are on a course leading to tragedy." Maurice who? Mr. Strong, a former oil executive from Canada (he was Pierre Trudeau´s pick to run state-owned Petro-Canada in the mid-1970s), was for many years the U.N.´s ultimate mandarin.
