History: Get Me Rewrite!
New York Times, by Maureen Dowd

Original Article

I found myself sitting on a bar stool last winter next to Robert Caro at an Irish wake in Times Square for my irreplaceable Times colleague Frank Prial. I had an overpowering urge to grab Caro’s arm and shake him. For the love of Pete, I wanted to yelp at the 78-year-old historian who has spent 38 years chronicling Lyndon Johnson in more than 3,388 pages, was he ever going to get to Vietnam? But the shy, bespectacled writer picking at his hors d’oeuvres did not look like the sort of man who could be rushed. As Adam Nagourney wrote

First lady´s mission: Free speech for all

First lady Michelle Obama told a group of Chinese students Saturday that free speech is a universal right that makes countries stronger. Nations are “stronger and more prosperous” when people’s opinions are heard," Obama said during her trip to China, which employs some of the strictest limits on the Internet. “We respect the uniqueness of other cultures and societies, but when it comes to expressing yourself freely and worshipping as you choose and having open access to information, we believe those universal rights — they are universal rights that are the birthright of every person on this planet,” she said

Obama´s Weekly Address: Minimum

President Obama delivered his weekly address this morning, following up on the themes of last week´s: namely, pressuring Congress to raise the minimum wage. This week, however, the president insisted that the minimum wage was a women´s rights issue, because "women hold most lower-wage jobs in America." The president began his statements by repeating one of the more prominent talking points of the Obama administration since this year´s State of the Union address: "A woman deserves to earn equal pay for equal work." The president insisted that it was necessary for Congress to "act on these priorities" for women, but

Could the U.S. Face a Cruise Missile
Threat from the Gulf of Mexico?
National Journal, by Diane Barnes    Original Article

The United States is puzzling over how to block cruise missiles that theoretically could be launched from the Gulf of Mexico, even after throwing some of its most advanced technologies at the problem. Russia and Iran have been cited as possible threats that might, at some point, lurk in the waters just off U.S. shores. A 2013 military exercise pitted systems such as Patriot interceptors, Aegis warships and combat aircraft against potential cruise-missile or short-range ballistic missiles fired from the Gulf. But the drill highlighted a particular vulnerability to cruise missiles lobbed from that region, U.S. Northern Command head Gen.

"I just shot an elephant in my pajamas," goes the old Groucho Marx joke. "How he got in my pajamas I don´t know." You´ve probably heard that one before, or something similar. For example, while viewing polling data for the 2008 presidential election on Comedy Central, Stephen Colbert deadpanned, "If I´m reading this graph correctly…I´d be very surprised." Zingers like these aren´t just good lines. They reveal something unusual about how the mind operates—and they show us how humor works. Simply put, the brain likes to jump the gun. We are always guessing where things are going, and we often

John Hinderaker of the Powerline blog took the Washington Post down, hard, on Thursday for foolishly accepting a false report from a left-wing activist group and running it as a "news" story. Hinderaker´s debunking of the article, an exercise in anti-Koch Brothers propaganda, is a thing of beauty... not least because he only needed a few minutes on the Internet to prove the central claims of the story false, namely that the Kochs are allegedly the biggest leaseholders in Canadian oil sands, and are therefore a sinister power behind the drive to build the Keystone XL pipeline. In truth, the

A wind turbine at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota paid for with $2.3 million in federal stimulus funds has been "inoperable" for one and half years. According to Fox News, the "600-kilowatt wind turbine--some 245 foot tall--stands... frozen" and no one is even trying to fix it. In the December 2009 buildup to the allotment of stimulus money for the construction of the St. Cloud turbine, an "administration document" outlined how "agencies... throughout the federal government... A week before a self-imposed deadline for a review of National Security Agency programs, President Barack Obama sought Friday to assure leading Internet and tech executives that his administration is committed to protecting people´s privacy. CEOs from Facebook, Google, Netflix and others spent more than two hours with Obama in the Oval Office discussing their concerns about NSA spying programs, which have drawn outrage from tech companies whose data have been scooped up by the government. WASHINGTON— Mayor Vincent Gray often calls the District of Columbia "the envy of the nation" for its robust economy and fast-growing population, but some say the local government he leads — plagued by corruption, pay-to-play politics and disengaged voters — is a stain on the city´s progress. The latest bruise to the city´s reputation involves Gray, who is under federal investigation. Prosecutors say he knew about a $668,000 campaign slush fund that helped him get elected in 2010, and while Gray has not been charged, five people involved with his campaign have been convicted. Separately, three former members of the

"That doesn´t excuse the behavior that occurred here, but I think that (inspections) would have prevented it, because Dr. Gosnell was not a stupid man. He may not have been at the

Jimmy Carter has been very active in the decades since his presidency, and his successors have occasionally called for his advice. Except, it turns out, the current occupant of the office. A clip from Carter’s upcoming Meet the Press interview reveals that President Obama is the first president since Carter left office not to solicit the Southern Democrat’s advice. Carter explained, “President Clinton did and President George W. Bush and H.W. Bush and even Ronald Reagan used to call on us to go into sensitive areas.” They all asked Carter to deal with “unsavory characters,” but Obama hasn’t reached out to

(Video) The Obama ladies are in the house — the house of China, that is. First lady Michelle Obama, her two daughters, Malia and Sasha, and her mother touched down Thursday in China for what’s being touted as a weeklong feel-good tourist event, amid increasing murmurs back home about U.S. taxpayers having to foot the bill. Mrs. Obama is supposed to use her visit for soft diplomacy only, and shy from the more controversial topics that plague U.S.-China relations, namely human rights and economics. No reporters accompanied the family on the trip. “The nature of her visit is really quite

“Obamacare” as shorthand for the Affordcable Care Act was first used mostly by critics of the law, but now everyone’s using the moniker and President Obama has long since embraced it. Is Barack Obama simply too busy to be Chief Executive of the United States? Apparently. One of the primary functions of the president is to keep the nation safe, to preserve it from its enemies. To do that effectively, one would actually have to maintain something of a consistent level of attention to the moving pieces that directly influence how future events will unfold. None other than the truly sycophantic thinks for a second that President Obama cares a whit for anything that does not involve fundamentally altering the social composition of this country. Or golf. Even worse, one of the writers behind the story is married to a political operative in the left wing Koch-demonization machine. The Washington Post was recently purchased by Jeff Bezos of Amazon, who ought to take a hard look at the reporters and editors who collaborated with the left wing smear machine, and while he is at it, should send a note of thanks to John Hinderaker, the blogger

Black students are more likely to be suspended from U.S. public schools — even as tiny preschoolers. The racial disparities in American education, from access to high-level classes and experienced teachers to discipline, were highlighted in a report released Friday by the Education Department´s civil rights arm. The suspensions — and disparities — begin at the earliest grades. Black children represent about 18 percent of children in preschool programs in schools, but they make up almost half of the preschoolers who are suspended more than once, the report said. Six percent of the nation´s districts with preschools reported suspending at
