Snakebite death of Middlesboro pastor was
quick, son says; medical treatment refused

Lexington Herald-Leader, by Bill Estep

MIDDLESBORO — Snake-handling preacher Jamie Coots, who never backed away from his beliefs despite derision, criminal charges and excruciating bites, died Saturday night after being bitten by a rattlesnake during a church service. Family members of Coots, 42, refused medical treatment for him. He was pronounced dead about two hours after the rattler sank its fangs into his right hand. His son said the poison overwhelmed his father within minutes of the bite. "It was the quickest snakebite I ever seen in my life," Coots´ son, Cody, said Sunday. Jamie Coots´ death appears to be the first from a snakebite

Comments:
This article goes into more detail on just how fast the (timber) rattlesnake venom took Pastor Coots out. I was astonished that a bite on the hand by a half-grown timber rattlesnake--they can grow slighty over six feet long--could, untreated, kill a full grown man in two hours. Heck, a black mamba or spectacled cobra probably wouldn´t kill you any quicker than that. It´s possible, I suppose, that he might have developed a sensitivity to the venom after several bites. Copperhead bites could probably be survived without treatment;

(continued) cottonmouth (water moccasin) bites are significantly worse because they inject more venom. Bites from timber, canebrake (related species), Western diamondback, or the massive Eastern diamondbacks (which can exceed eight feet in length) are significant medical emergencies.

Some of these rural churches that practice snake handling also practice drinking poison, usually strychnine, as they believe Mark 16:18 commands them to do. It´s their decision to do whatever they want to do. Nobody could stop them, anyway. Just leave them be.

Like most Christians, I don´t believe in taking unnecessary risks with my life, especially ones so painful as snakebite. There are three species of indigenous venomous snakes around here (cottonmouth water moccasin, Eastern diamondback rattlesnake, and the Eastern coral snake) that could kill you with one bite. There´s sleo a fourth, the pygmy rattlesnake, that could also give a nasty bite. I avoid them, and recommend that everyone else do the same.

I´ve always felt like handling snakes is tempting God, which Jesus told Satan thou shalt not do. That said, the verses after the 8th verse of Mark 16 are probably the most disputed verses in the entire Bible. Few scholars believe they are original.

#3 - the book of Acts gives us a working example of the scripture. After being shipwrecked, Paul was picking up firewood and was bitten. He shook the snake off.

The unbelievers gawked that he survived and was to be killed by snakebite. After he didn´t die, he used the opportunity to witness to them.

Mark says these are signs to accompany the believers----for the benefit of the unbelievers.

Humans, at least fearless humans, seem to have a certain control over animals:

Several years ago there was a marvelous story of a man who saved an orphaned tiger cub, and kept it until it became to large to manage. He donated the animal to a zoo. After several months he visited the zoo, and sought out his ´friend´. He crossed the barrier to the tiger´s cage, and when stuck his hand between the bars, the tiger lunged across the cage to attack him. The man slapped the lunging tiger´s nose and called him his pet name, then chastised the tiger for not recognizing him. The tiger was subdued, and the man patted, and stroked the tigers head.

One of the zoo keeper pale with fear leaped across the barrier and frantically pulled the man away.

"No, no, no don´t worry," the man assured the keeper, "I raised this tiger."

"No you didn´t," replied the keeper, "the tiger you donated to the zoo died, this tiger was just recently sent here directly from Africa."

Jesus was tempted to jump from a great height by Satan, as one of the tests of His humanity:

Luke 4:12
And Jesus answered and said to him, "It is said, ´YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.´"

During the Millineal reign of Jesus Christ the lamb shall lay down with the lion and thorns will disappear from plants, but not before. We live in wicked times because this is Satan´s world, which he won when Adam sinned.

After criticizing President Obama throughout his second term, I´ve reversed course and decided that he´s a tremendous leader, one of the greatest presidents in U.S. history. Perfection is too high of a bar to set for any man, or any president, but Obama has come close to clearing it. What stands between this president and Mount Rushmore?
