Trapped South African Miners Can
Either Stay in Mine or Get Arrested

Atlantic Wire, by Sara Morrison

Suspected illegal gold miners trapped in a South African mine have a choice: get rescued and arrested, or stay in the mine. Eleven miners were rescued from the shaft, near Johannesburg, yesterday and promptly arrested. When the other trapped miners -- it´s not known how many are down there but some reports say it could be as many as 200 -- saw that, they decided to stay down there. The rescue operation has been postponed until the miners change their minds. Currently, the BBC reports, a "private security company" is guarding the mine to make sure the rescue can resume if the

In case you missed it, Senate Democrats staged an all-night talkfest on Monday to promote higher taxes and increased government regulation to address the scientific theory known as “climate change.” Hopefully you did miss it, because most well adjusted people have better things to do than stay up all night watching a bunch of senior citizens talk about solar panels and wind turbines. At least one person was paying close attention: liberal billionaire and reluctant democracy advocate Tom Steyer, who has pledged to spend $100 million backing Democrats who support aggressive government action to reduce carbon emissions. Democratic senators want Steyer’s

During the all-night Senate speech about climate change, Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., said he drove to Hawaii as a teenager. "I just do want to say that right after I turned 17 and got my New Jersey driver´s license, one of the earliest places I drove was a trip — the only trip I have ever taken was to Hawaii," he said on the floor at about 3:00 a.m. "You didn´t drive to Hawaii," Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., said, correcting the freshman senator. Booker laughed weakly. "I did not drive to Hawaii," he admitted. "Thank you for that clarification, I

John Kerry — The ridiculous face

With a face like this, is it any wonder we are the laughingstock of the world? To be fair, Secretary of State John Kerry started out at a considerable disadvantage. His long, narrow face — with those sad, sunken eyes — has often been compared to that of a horse. Perhaps a starving draft mule retreating with a family from the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. That, along with what he says when he opens his mouth, has long made him an easy caricature of a perfect buffoon. Mr. Kerry will, of course, go down in history as the

Disappearance of Malaysia Airlines
Flight 370 sparks conspiracy theories

It may take years before investigators determine exactly what happened to Malaysia Airline Flight MH370. But the conspiracy theories are already flowing freely. The facts behind the plane’s mysterious disappearance make it ripe for theories that range from the plausible, like pilot error, to the outright bizarre, like alien abduction. The Boeing 777 en route to Beijing vanished early Saturday morning, along with its 239 passengers and crew. Investigators say the flight veered off course for more than an hour with all of its tracking systems turned off. Dozens of ships and aircraft from nine nations have launched a search and rescue

WASHINGTON – The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it approved a nerve-stimulating headband as the first medical device to prevent migraine headaches. Agency officials said the device provides a new option for patients who cannot tolerate migraine medications. The Cefaly device is a battery-powered plastic band worn across the forehead. Using an adhesive electrode, the band emits a low electrical current to stimulate nerves associated with migraine pain. Users may feel a tingling sensation on the skin where the electrode is applied. The device is designed to be used no more than 20 minutes a day by patients 18

Errico Auricchio produced cheese with his family in Italy until he brought his trade to the United States more than 30 years ago. Now, the European Union is saying his cheese isn´t authentic enough to carry a European name. As part of trade talks, the EU wants to ban the use of names like Parmesan, feta and Gorgonzola on cheese made in the United States. The argument is that the American-made cheeses are shadows of the original European varieties and cut into sales and identity of the European cheeses. Auricchio, president of Wisconsin-based BelGioioso Cheese Inc., says he has no idea what

Could this move by the Crimean parliament start a war between Ukraine and Russia, and perhaps involve Europe and Turkey? Or could it be a possible way out of an impasse that allows all sides to walk back from their positions? The legislators of the breakaway province voted to pursue independence if a scheduled referendum on Russian annexation passes as expected this week: The Crimean parliament voted Tuesday that the Black Sea peninsula will declare itself an independent state if its residents agree to split off from Ukraine and join Russia in a referendum. Crimea’s regional legislature on Tuesday adopted a “declaration

You have probably seen all of the ridiculous speculating about the GOP nomination in 2016. This is still speculating, but my sincere hope is you don’t think it’s ridiculous too. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is laying the foundation for his presidential bid in concrete and steel. First, forget about Jeb Bush unless you want to hand Hillary eight years in the White House. The latest Rasmussen poll shows her leading Jeb in a general election 47 percent to 33. His name is Bush and to the general public the specifics of how smart he is doesn’t matter one iota. Then there’s Ted Cruz,

Without an obvious frontrunner to represent Republicans against Hilary in 2016, one thing is guaranteed: It’s going to be an entertaining race. Contrary to conventional media wisdom, this week’s CPAC proved Republicans are likely going to put a formidable team on the presidential field in 2016—and they’ll have at least one advantage going into the election: Their primaries are going to be much more interesting, dramatic and entertaining than the Democratic primaries. This means Republicans are going to soak up a whole lot of press coverage and attention while the media and voters largely tune-out what is likely to be a

Rather he feels that the Senate Conservatives Fund is a fake, pretending to support conservatism while undermining it.(Snip)There are things that McConnell has done that I disagree with strongly, but he is definitely NOT a RINO — that’s just unfair. We saw more hints of the coming clash between Rand Paul and Ted Cruz this weekend, when (as predicted) Sen. Cruz criticized Paul’s foreign policy, painting it as dovish. (On Monday, Paul obliquely fired back.) But that wasn’t the only example of elbows being thrown on the right. Paul’s victory in the CPAC straw poll was at least partially stepped on when the Senate Conservatives Fund (Cruz allies who hate Paul-endorsed Sen. Mitch McConnell) released the results of their competing straw poll, creating confusion and serving to dampen the enthusiasm of Paul’s victory. And we were also reminded of the nascent Cruz-Palin

St. Petersburg, Florida- In the first major ballot box test of 2014, the GOP won. Republican David Jolly edged out Democrat Alex Sink to win Tuesday´s special election in Florida´s 13th Congressional District. Jolly will fill out the term of his former boss, Republican Rep. How would you feel if a police officer you knew for 20 years told you that if an order were issued to confiscate your guns, he wouldn’t hesitate to “kick your door in”? This was the precisely the experience Connecticut resident, Navy veteran and former firefighter John Cinque had after commenting on his state’s 2013 violation of the Second Amendment. The law in question criminalizes the sale of magazines holding more than 10 rounds and also certain semi-automatic rifles, and mandates that all grandfathered weapons and magazines must be registered with the state. A report released Tuesday by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform asserted that ex-IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights. Lerner continues to stonewall California Rep. Oversight member Rep. Jim Jordan told The Daily Caller that the committee is “moving” toward holding Lerner in contempt of Congress to compel her to testify. “I think that’s where we’re moving,” Jordan said. “I think that’s where this is headed.”
