STOCKTON — A fight on the basketball court between a fan and the wife of a rival basketball coach ended the night for both schools. The melee stopped the freshman girls game between McNair and St. Mary’s High School and canceled the rest of the night’s games. St. Mary’s girl’s basketball coach Tom Gonzalves is still in shock after what he describes as a brutal attack on his wife. “I’ve been coaching for a long time, and it’s one of the worst things I’ve ever seen,” he said. “She was covering herself up, and the lady was like, bam bam, and I saw two hits.” During a heated rivalry game, Gonzalves says a woman rooting

This is sad. All over a stupid game. No wonder I don´t follow sports.
Granted, I went to HS almost 40 years ago, but we never needed security. What has changed in those few years that people act so feral?

The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s office found millions in cash and jewelry in offices and apartments connected to ex-Energy Minister Eduard Stavytsky and ex-Food Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk. The new government in Kyiv is cracking down on officials in ex-President Viktor Yanukovych’s administration. After he was ousted, the full corruption of his administration was exposed. Over 32 searches took place at all the firms and apartments connected to Stavytsky. "When a search was being conducted in an apartment formerly owned by Stavytsky and, from March 15, by a legal entity, two safes and files of documents were discovered. A woman was caught

So in the Post’s view, it is acceptable to publish articles that are both literally false (Koch is the largest tar sands leaseholder) and massively misleading (the Keystone Pipeline is all about Koch Industries), if by doing so the paper can “stir and inflame public debate in this election year?” I can’t top Jonah Goldberg’s comment on that howler: By this logic any unfair attack posing as reporting is worthwhile when people try to correct the record. Why not just have at it and accuse the Kochs of killing JFK or hiding the Malaysian airplane? The resulting criticism would once

The famous lagoon city of Venice has voted to break away from the rest of Italy. Eighty nine per cent of Venetians backed the move to create their own sovereign state in a referendum on independence. They want to create the "Repubblica Veneta", which would not only include the city of Venice but surrounding areas. Venice, which attracts tens of thousands of US tourists each year, has been part of Italy for 150 years but before that was a powerful city state, naval and commercial power. The city lost its independence after being captured by Napoleon in the late eighteenth

Science is rife with corruption, incompetence, dishonesty and fabrication--and now, thanks to a frank resignation letter by the US´s top scientific misconduct official we have a better idea why. David E. Wright, a respected science historian, has just quit his job as director of the Office of Research Integrity (ORI; part of the Department of Health and Human Services) and is scathing about his experiences there. In his resignation letter, he accuses his boss HHS Assistant Secretary for Health Howard Koh of running an organization which is "secretive, autocratic and unaccountable." A Tea Party candidate became the first ever state senator in Pennsylvania to win as a write-in candidate on Tuesday in a special election that showed how dissatisfied voters are, even at the local level, with both organized political parties. During the campaign, conservative Republican Scott Wagner was blistered by establishment Republicans that he accused of "orchestrating the special election in such a way to hand the seat, vacated by Mike Waugh in January," to the establishment Republican candidate Ron Miller. According to the Patriot-News, Wagner captured 48 percent of the vote in York County while Democrat Linda Small got 26

A new poll shows Latinos -- a fast-growing and key demographic in American elections -- aren´t as fond of Obamacare as they once were. The Pew Research Center poll showed Hispanics are split on whether they approve of President Obama´s health-care law, with 47 percent approving and 47 percent disapproving. The numbers are notable because Latinos have generally been among the health-care law´s chief supporters. Other polls have shown they supported the law by a 2-to-1 margin, and a September 2013 poll, before the law´s implementation, showed 61 percent of Hispanics approved of it. In 2011, over 8,000 kids were suspended from preschool — preschool! — in America. More than half were black, despite comprising less than half of the student population. The odds are probably better than even that you will be annoyed by that. Which is fine. I accept that response. And there are a lot of possibilities that could explain how this bit of data is an aberration. As the Associated Press reports, the

That goes beyond hypocritical, and I think the American media and the international media has every right to call her and the Obama administration on that — that they permitted that to happen,” said Tom Whalen, a political history professor at Boston University. “It makes you shake your head, albeit sadly.” The first lady stopped at Peking University in Beijing yesterday

She’d show up when it suited her, waiting in the dark before dawn till I came downstairs and turned on my desk lamp. Then she’d make her presence known by rising up on her hind legs and gently
