Bob Costas and His Eyes Plot Their Return

Praised be the Olympian gods: we finally have some good news to share about the eyes of our fallen Olympic guide—our Hermes of sorts—Bob Costas. He may be coming back soon. He explained his ailment to lord of all media Ryan Seacrest this morning on the radio, that he´s may be back by the weekend. "I’m hoping that I’m back by the weekend, and I certainly think I’ll be able to do the second half of the games," he said per The Hollywood Reporter. "The virus, they tell me, won´t run its course for two or three weeks, but the symptoms

With Costas gone, we´ve got that creepy looking guy, Matt Lauer. from the Today show. Frankly, if I have to look at one or the other [and I don´t], I´ll take Costas. What the heck happened to Lauer? The last time I saw him he had hair and no lip hair. He is just ugly.

I´ll stay with the Olympics until the end because I like the sports, but this is the worst group of blowhards commentating yet. Bar none. And I don´t understand the skating coverage. I´ve got some NBC sports network as well as the regular network. During the day, we get Tara Lapinski and Johnny Weir commentating, and at night, we get the same performances with Scotty Hamilton and some girl commentating. It´s positively weird. Same exact performances. Two broadcasts. Different commentators.

I would hope this is the last time Johnny Weir [Weird] is asked to commentate anything. I don´t see how Tara Lapinski can stay within 50 feet of him. He is so flaming Gay and knows it all, and every time Lapinski opens her mouth, he contradicts her with his know-it-all comments. I would slap him silly if I had to sit next to him.

I just cannot make myself watch the NBC coverage of the Olympics. They over over produce it. The up close interviews are always nauseating. The commentators are self indulged nitwits. I used to like watching the Olypics, but NBC ruined them.

ONCE upon a time I had a cat named Lucky, and the name fit. She turned up on our doorstep as a stray and stayed with us for 10 years, until her rather gruesome demise. (More about that later.) I liked her because she was a free spirit, and a survivor, going out for two, three, even five days, in all seasons. She’d show up when it suited her, waiting in the dark before dawn till I came downstairs and turned on my desk lamp. Then she’d make her presence known by rising up on her hind legs and gently

In BOYERS, Pa. — The trucks full of paperwork come every day, turning off a country road north of Pittsburgh and descending through a gateway into the earth. Underground, they stop at a metal door decorated with an American flag. Behind the door, a room opens up as big as a supermarket, full of five-drawer file cabinets and people in business casual. About 230 feet below the surface, there is easy-listening music playing at somebody’s desk. This is one of the weirdest workplaces in the U.S. government — both for where it is and for what it does. Hawaii Law Lets Police

Honolulu police officers have urged lawmakers to keep an exemption in state law that allows undercover officers to have sex with prostitutes during investigations, touching off a heated debate. Authorities say they need the legal protection to catch lawbreakers in the act. Critics, including human trafficking experts and other police, say it´s unnecessary and could further victimize sex workers, many of whom have been forced into the trade. Police haven´t said how often — or even if — they use the provision. And when they asked legislators to preserve it, they made assurances that internal policies and procedures are in place to

In the Washington media world, there’s no more rarefied spot, both for the host and the guests, than that of the network Sunday morning shows. So why are they so predictable, and predictably boring? Most members of Congress would kill to be interviewed on one of the shows, since getting such an appearance instantly brands you as an important person whose opinions are worth listening to. But “Meet the Press,” the oldest and most venerated of the shows, has been struggling of late, falling behind “This Week” and “Face the Nation” in the ratings, leading to some rumors about David Gregory’s

If you lease a car, don´t think you can get out of payments just because you´re dead. Death, it turns out, is considered "early termination" of your contract, and that can mean thousands of dollars in penalty fees. Sally Shafton, 81, learned this recently after her husband, Bob, died of prostate cancer. She now faces charges totaling $2,352.72 from Toyota Financial Services. Her husband had leased a brand-new Prius from Manhattan Beach Toyota a year ago. He knew at the time that he was ill but, according to his wife, "the salesman assured him that death would qualify for interruption

Black students are more likely to be suspended from U.S. public schools — even as tiny preschoolers. The racial disparities in American education, from access to high-level classes and experienced teachers to discipline, were highlighted in a report released Friday by the Education Department´s civil rights arm. The suspensions — and disparities — begin at the earliest grades. Black children represent about 18 percent of children in preschool programs in schools, but they make up almost half of the preschoolers who are suspended more than once, the report said. Six percent of the nation´s districts with preschools reported suspending at

The odds are probably better than even that you will be annoyed by that. Which is fine. I accept that response. And there are a lot of possibilities that could explain how this bit of data is an aberration. As the Associated Press reports, the
