Paul Ryan’s military
pay gambit backfires

Politico, by Austin Wright & Juana Summers

Original Article

Rep. Paul Ryan’s bid to kick off an overhaul of military compensation is backfiring — instead highlighting the perils of scaling back entitlement programs. The Senate on Wednesday handily approved, 95-3, a House-passed bill that the House Budget Committee chairman says “undermines” a tenet of the bipartisan budget deal he struck in December with his Democratic counterpart in the Senate, Patty Murray of Washington state. The Wisconsin Republican’s gambit was viewed as an attempt to get the ball rolling on military compensation reform — something top commanders say is badly needed — and to show that entitlement cuts are possible,

Comments:
Veterans, active service members, families, friends, and their supporters worked their tails off to right this wrong and to show Paul Ryan that some things ARE sacred. Those "top commanders" who say this is badly needed are nothing more than 0bama´s stooges.

It wasn´t only Paul Ryan. But now he sees sucking up to Democrats and the leftist agenda is not going to win a Republican any favors. I doubt he´s learned his lesson, the others like him never do.

Military retirement and COLA´s for that retirement are not ENTITLEMENT programs. This is more Politico and democrat spin. That retirement is earned unlike the food stamp, welfare and disability programs so favored by the socialist democrats of this country

There is really something wrong with a Congress that goes along with diminishing already vested veterans while allowing loopholes to remain in the law that allow illegal aliens to receive fraudulent tax credits through the federal income tax programs for claimed children who may either not be in the USA or who do not exist at all.

No. 2 beat me to it. Telling a 20-year soldier who has spent several tours in a combat zone (some at the cost of their marriages) that now they are going to take an $80,000 hit to their pensions isn´t exactly saying "Thank you for your service." The first word is one letter shorter than that.

Ryan´s defenders have yet to arrive to explain how brilliant he is and what a great Speaker of the House he would make. In reality, Paul Ryan may be stupidest politician to ever disgrace the GOP. Ryan has:

1. Conspired with a noxious Democrat to...
2. Reduce veterans benefits and in order to...
3. Eliminate the sequester that otherwise would have actually cut government spending, and in so doing has...
4. Enabled Obama to continue bankrupting the country while Ryan continues to...
5. Argue with Republicans and many Democrats (!), who are trying to restore the money for our veterans.

It takes a special kind of stupid to get principle, politics, and party loyalty this wrong all at the same time. One thing is certain: If Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz, or a TEA Party conservative had made this big a mess, we would never hear the end of it from the same people who defend Ryan now.

The 137-page, FBI-sworn affidavit against California State Sen. Leland Yee, a Democrat who is also running for Secretary of State, and over two dozen other individuals reads like a crime thriller. Beyond the widely reported stories of alleged wire fraud, money laundering, corruption, and bribery, the affidavit contains tales of alleged murder-for-hire plots involving a political consultant close to Yee, as well as large international weapons trafficking operations. Indeed, while the media have fixated on the hypocrisy of a gun-control advocate--Yee sponsored legislation against detachable magazines, for example--alleged involvement in gun smuggling, few reports delve into the kind of weapons

Following Republican David Jolly’s win over Democrat Alex Sink in last week’s special election in Florida, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has revealed the number one word that fires up GOP voters. But more on that later. P.S. It’s not “Obama” or “ObamaCare.” The NRCC recently described to National Journal a first-of-its-kind political operation deployed on behalf of the Republican congressional candidate. The southern Indian Ocean, where investigators suspect missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 may have come down, is one place where a commercial airliner can crash without a ship spotting it, a radar plotting it or even a satellite picking it up. The empty expanse of water is one of the most remote places in the world and also one of the deepest, posing potentially enormous challenges for the international search effort focusing on the area, one of several possible crash sites. Even Australia, which has island territories in the Indian Ocean and sends rescue planes to pluck stricken yachtsmen from

Legislation that would repeal caps on annual cost-of-living adjustments for military retirees under age 62 will be considered next week by the Senate. Majority leader Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., has fast-tracked a bill drafted by Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., setting a procedural vote for Monday that paves the way for a vote by mid-week. The legislation, S 1963, would repeal the portion of the Bipartisan Budget Act that will reduce annual COLA increases by 1 percentage point for “working age” retirees, starting in late 2015.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) said the fault of struggling to sign up on the Obamacare exchanges didn’t lie with the faulty website, but with the people who weren’t “educated on how to use the Internet.” Explaining the reasoning behind the latest Obamacare delay, Reid said too many people just didn’t know to use their computer properly and needed more time. Apparently, it had nothing to do with the well-documented failings of the website that have embarrassed the White House for months. “We have hundreds of thousands of people who tried to sign up who didn’t get through,” he said.

On Tuesday night two things happened. 1. A trio of Secret Service agents were sent home from Amsterdam after one was found passed out drunk in a hotel hallway. 2. The Obama Administration announced (another) extension of the enrollment deadline for Obamacare signups. At first glance, these two events have little in common with one another. When the curtain on open enrollment falls on March 31, the last remaining big myth of ObamaCare will be fully exposed: The individual mandate has failed. After a last-ditch effort with President Obama himself encouraging "young invincibles" to sign up before the deadline, the administration is scrambling to boost enrollment. On Tuesday, the White House announced that people who applied for coverage on the federal health-insurance exchange will have until mid-April to finish the paperwork. The mandate was supposed to be the administration´s magical elixir for the assorted shortcomings
