Behind the scenes of
a dramatic debt vote

Politico, by Manu Raju*

Original Article

Posted By:KarenJ1, 2/12/2014 7:35:34 PM

Sen. Ted Cruz and the GOP rank and file ultimately backed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Whip John Cornyn into a corner on the debt ceiling increase. The leaders had wanted to allow the toxic measure to pass with just 51 votes so all 45 Republicans could vote against it. But Cruz, the Texas tea party freshman, demanded approval by a 60-vote threshold. So McConnell and Cornyn tried to persuade more than five Republicans in safe seats to support the plan, but they were met with stiff resistance. No Republican wanted to be vote No. 60 on a

Warning: This will make you very angry! I´m shocked that Barrasso voted yes, the others not at all. McCain said: that it was a very courageous act, especially Sen. McConnell, who — as you well know — is in a very tough race... Un.be.lievable! What traitors they are.

I hope Cornyn is defeated in his primary race. This is it with him. He is like Hatch, an interminable, liar that never votes conservative, but says he is one. Vote for Stockman. Cornyn and his GOP establishment hencement have tried to demonize Stockman, say he is crazy. Yeah, Stock is crazy alright, he has voted 100% in opposition to Obama, whom Stockman crazily describes as a communist.

Cornyn tried to claim that all of the Republicans opposed raising the debt ceiling. Well, I have this to say, it is strange opposition to something when you cast a vote that you know will end up in what you say you oppose happening. Especially when if you had chosen to vote the other way it is likely that the thing you opposed would have been stopped.

Sorry, Senator Corny, I do not believe that you opposed raising the debt ceiling.

Cornyn still gets to boast conservative credentials because he voted against the bill when it cleared cloture. IMHO that was a vote for the bill.

Remember the horrible pictures and lies that Dewhurst did against Cruz?

Cornyn is using the same tactics against Stockman.

In the past I had voted for Dewhurst and Cornyn but no more.

We know the Democrats rely on low information voters. It is a shame when those low information voters are purported conservatives.
This problem began when so-called conservatives in the House GOP caucus would not agree to any condition that could be added to the debt ceiling increase. These stiff necked losers couldn´t even agree with each other!
Given that the media will ensure that Republicans will bear the responsibility for any government slowdown and conflate disapproval with default; the leadership had to steer away from the rocks.
The "purity caucus" could have avoided this had they come to an agreement among themselves. They were too pure.
As a result, we lost. Predictably, the serially uninformed blame the leadership and not the instigators of the disaster.

I believe the real story here is that this may very well be the opening shot that leads to all out civil war within the GOP. With Cruz forcing them to vote, there is no way they will simply sit back and let this go unanswered I suspect it will get very ugly and nasty very fast.

Three cheers for Senator Cruz and the actions he took. The GOP is beyond salvage.

If either of them survive the primaries, it will surprise me.

Cornyn was head of the good ol´ boys group that backed Dewhurst against Cruz in the Texas Senate race. You can bet Senator Cruz knows full well how Cornyn wraps himself in conservative credentials towards election time.

Currently Cornyn is running ads in Texas bragging about how he has fought Obama every step of the way. Oh, he owns a gun too, just like me!

Cornyn voted for cloture on Obamacare then turned around and bragged about voting against the bill. I tore his staffer a new one on a phone call soon after the vote. Hopefully sufficient conservative Texas voters are awake this time around and won´t simply check Cornyn because of name recognition.

I´m looking forward to the Texas primary and would love for Senator Cruz to throw his support behind Cornyn´s opponent. Wouldn´t hurt if Palin spoke up too.

Ted Cruz is the gift that just keeps on giving – to Democrats. If he had succeeded in getting another government shutdown, it would have been another disaster for the Republicans, just like the last one he succeeded in orchestrating last fall.

Think! It is just plain stupid to pick political fights that you can’t win. Yet this is the second time Cruz has tried to put Republicans in this box. All it would have achieved would be to divert attention from the Obamacare fiasco to those terrible Republicans shutting down the government, again! It took courage for Senators John Cornyn and Mitch McConnell to put their political futures in jeopardy by voting to minimize the damage.

The only way Republicans can accomplish anything is to become the majority by winning elections. This will not happen if the Democrats can paint Republicans as reckless and irresponsible. Ted Cruz is the poster child for reckless and irresponsible.

Your friendly neighborhood columnist has once again run afoul of Facebook’s elusive community standards. Now before you call up the preacher and put me on the church prayer list – let me assure the posting was neither unseemly nor ungentlemanly. This time I was censored for writing something about Rancher Cliven Bundy. I realized I had landed in the Facebook gulag when I tried to post our daily Bible verse. However, I was unable to post anything because Facebook had taken great offense to something I had written. “We removed something your page posted,” Facebook told me in a rather unpleasant message.

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. Even though the number of illegal immigrants who have been deported through the courts has dropped by 43% since President Barack Obama took office, the Obama administration may enact administrative changes to allow bond hearings for detained illegal immigrants. According to the Los Angeles Times, this could result in "several thousand" illegal immigrants being released from jails and "could slow the pace of deportations" even more. It’s pitiful that we’ve reached this point, but Obama’s account of this chat really is more credible than Cantor’s. O’s position on immigration is straightforward: He wants amnesty badly, partly for legacy reasons and partly because he’s understandably keen to legalize a few million future Democratic voters, and he’s hoping the GOP will go along so that he doesn’t have to do something risky like an executive moratorium on deportations. The GOP leadership’s position is anything but straightforward. They’re convinced that they need to pass some sort of immigration bill before 2016 or else Latinos will hand the White House
