Before Coming Out,
a Hard Time Growing Up

New York Times, by Joe Drape, Steve Eder and Billy Witz

Original Article

Columbia, Mo. — Michael Sam was the loud country boy who wore a tank top and a cowboy hat. He was the smooth-singing baritone who could irritate his coaches and crack up his teammates with his improvised songs. He was one of the best players to come out of tiny Hitchcock, Tex., where his family was well known for all the wrong reasons. He was an all-American and defensive terror on the football field. He was a regular at the gay club, where the bartenders knew him by name. Sam introduced himself to the world Sunday night as a National Football League

Comments:
However it turns out for Michael Sam in the NFL, he´s already succeeded in his life.

Why do homosexuals feel the need to announce to the world that they prefer the same sex to the opposite sex?

Never have known of a heterosexual to announce that they are straight.

Homosexuals that feel the need to announce their homosexuality must have some reservations about what they participate in. Else they would go about their business.

Poor gays. Nobody but they had a hard time growing up. Nobody but they ever felt sad for no reason, or unsure of who they were, or afraid somebody would see thru the mask they wore.

Good grief. Maybe one of a hundred people DON´T have those insecurities. The rest of us, even straights, felt them just as acutely as gays do. Gays feel rejected? They don´t feel attraction to girls so they have no idea how roughly a girl´s rejection can rub a young man´s ego.

Will you gays kindly quit feeling sorry for yourselves in public? The world is sick of hearing about how it sucked to be you. It´s common to us all. Most of us at one time or another wished we were anybody but ourselves.

I´m beginning to think the only way we can get the gay community to stop ´coming out´ or making absurd announcements is for every heterosexual who gets in front of a microphone to make their own announcement. "I´m straight and am loving every moment. Any questions?"

Michael, lots of kids go through hard times growing up. Some are shy, others are fat, some wear glasses, others wear braces, some are always adapting to a new school, others are mistreated at home, some never seem to have the right clothes to fit in, others struggle with learning, some are too clumsy for sports, others have a bully in the neighborhood who beats them up and steals their lunch.

Life isn´t always easy and being or not being gay has little to do with it.

All this to-do seems to have a lot more to do with getting moved higher up in the draft than previously when you were just too small to get picked early.

In the future, keep some things to your self, capish?

Boring. Liberals and the media (same thing I guess) have pushed so many of these stories down our throats over the years that it has become quite tedious. The only reason that these stories still get play is because liberal elites in the media perceive that there is an element in this country who flat out hate and want to hurt gay people. They call these people republicans. They simply can´t accept the fact that this is not the way things are. Their very existence depends on their perception that a straw man exists, and also that they can convince an ignorant stupid public that they are right. Where would liberals be without these perceived "Social Ills"? Every piece of legislation they support is argued on the basis of someone being disenfranchised or unfair/disparate (my favorite liberal buzz non-word) treatment to some sort of minority class. They are masters of weaving non-existant tales. Yellow Journalism 2.0.

Doesn´t get picked in the first round draft; Homophobia on the part of the NFL.

Doesn´t get on the team he wants; Homophobia on the part of the owner.

A business like this—imagine a guided tour of the California wine country, but with bongs instead of wine bottles—wouldn’t have been possible without Amendment 64, which was passed by Colorado voters in November and essentially makes recreational marijuana use legal in the state. The party of Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan has now lost the popular vote in five of the last six presidential elections. The marketplace of ideas will render us irrelevant, and soon, if we are not honest about our time and place in history. Unfortunately, much of the discussion has focused on cosmetic solutions to, say, our underperformance among ethnic and young voters. This is a mistake: we cannot cross this river by feeling for stones. Instead, we need to take a hard look at what today’s conservatism stands for.

Something of a disconnect had emerged between my private conversations and the things I wrote for Grantland/ESPN. In essence, I had turned into two people. There´s Sports Fan Me, and there´s ESPN Me. Sports Fan Me is candid, jaded, suspicious of everyone. Sports Fan Me repeatedly gets involved in arguments and e-mail chains centered on the question, "Do you think he´s cheating?"

In the harrowing aftermath of the school shooting in Connecticut, one thought wells in my mind: Why can’t we regulate guns as seriously as we do cars? The fundamental reason kids are dying in massacres like this one is not that we have lunatics or criminals — all countries have them — but that we suffer from a political failure to regulate guns. Children ages 5 to 14 in America are 13 times as likely to be murdered with guns as children in other industrialized countries, according to David Hemenway, a public health specialist at Harvard who has written an excellent book on gun violence.

A few months back, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated for the record that 7 million Obamacare sign-ups by the end of March would constitute success. She was clear about it. But then February came, and February always stinks. It’s just a lousy month. You’re tired of winter, you’re still miles away from spring, and no one was signing up for Obamacare. That 7 million figure looked totally unreachable. So Sebelius does what every other member of the Obama administration does when confronted with inconvenient facts. She lied. I have no objections to Jeb Bush running for president. He obviously has a wide appeal as a potential candidate. Obamacare, the plan purportedly created to provide health coverage for the uninsured, has enrolled just 1.7% of America´s 48.6 million uninsured. News of the disastrous numbers comes as nervous Democrats and President Barack Obama, ahead of the November midterm elections, did their best on Monday´s enrollment deadline to put a positive spin on the deeply unpopular Obamacare program. (Snip) The White House now claims an Obamacare enrollment figure of six million people. However, according to The New York Times, at least 20% of those never paid their premiums to activate coverage, leaving them uninsured.

Drinking Earl Grey tea could help guard against heart disease, it has emerged, after a study found that bergamot extract--a key ingredient in the hot drink--is just as effective as statins at controlling cholesterol. Scientists believe bergamot, a fragrant Mediterranean citrus fruit which gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavour, can significantly lower cholesterol. They say it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can attack proteins in the body known to cause heart disease. The study found bergamot could even be as effective as statins, used to control cholesterol but which can have side effects in

A RAND study pours buckets of cold water on the Obama administration’s claims that it has nearly reached 7 million sign-ups for Obamacare. The whole point of Obamacare, supposedly, was to insure the uninsured and bend the cost curve down. Those who had insurance were supposed to be able to keep it. Families were supposed to start saving about $2500 a year. If you believed the Obama administration.
