Governor Chris Christie’s campaign won approval from New Jersey election regulators to use donations to cover the organization’s legal costs stemming from investigations of intentional traffic jams at the George Washington Bridge. The campaign has been subpoenaed by both the state Assembly and federal prosecutors, and today’s action by the Election Law Enforcement Commission in Trenton will allow it to gather and deliver documents for about 40 employees, according to Mark Sheridan, a Newark attorney for the campaign. Elected officials have used campaign accounts to pay legal bills. U.S. Representative Charles Rangel, a New York Democrat, reported fees as the

SAN FRANCISCO - PayPal President David Marcus said on Monday that his credit card details were stolen and the information was used to finance a fraudulent spending spree. Marcus said the card was probably "skimmed" at the hotel he was staying at, or at a merchant he visited, during a recent trip to the U.K. "They then cloned it and went on a shopping spree," the executive wrote on Twitter. Marcus noted that his credit card had EMV chip technology, a more secure system currently in use in Europe. But that didn´t stop the data from being stolen and used for a "ton

House Speaker John Boehner last week pulled the plug on his immigration reform “principles” after his fellow Republicans refused to go along. One reason why the proposal received a cold reception was that the GOP’s self-appointed moral guardian Ann Coulter bandied surveys showing that immigrants will “wreck the country” with their Big Government-loving ways. “It´s not their [Republicans’] position on amnesty that immigrants don´t like,” she harrumphed. “It´s Republicans´ support for small government, gun rights, patriotism, the Constitution and capitalism.” But if Republicans love liberty and small government, they sure have a weird way of showing it. There is no

McConnell´s Primary Opponent Supported TARP

Matt Bevin, who is challenging Mitch McConnell in the Kentucky Republican primary, has made McConnell’s support in 2008 for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) a centerpiece of his insurgent campaign. It’s an understandable move on Bevin’s part. McConnell has a strong conservative voting record. Without the TARP vote, Bevin would be reduced mainly to generic complaints that McConnell is too “establishment.” But now it turns out that Bevin, an investment fund manager at the time, also supported TARP. In addition, he supported the Federal Reserve’s decision to begin buying commercial paper issued by banks. Politico, says it has obtained an October

If a conservative politician called an exploited intern a “narcissistic loony toon,” his career would be over. But Hillary Clinton will pay almost no price for describing Monica Lewinsky in those terms. The left’s sympathy for Sandra Fluke and its lectures on the dangers of name-calling won’t resurface for Lewinsky. Liberal pols, both those who mistreat women and those who excuse the mistreatment, enjoy a standing exemption from feminism’s customary strictures. Hillary is free to war on Bill Clinton’s women to her heart’s content. But perhaps the most telling revelation in the Washington Free Beacon’s story about Hillary’s candid conversations with

America’s president — heir to the world’s greatest document of freedom ever drawn up by man — strode across the hallowed grounds of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. With his hands clasped behind his back as a fuehrer surveying his troops or his kingdom, he told a gaggle of onlookers, “That’s the good thing about being president. I can do whatever I want.” It may have been a lame attempt at despot humor. But it fell terribly flat and reveals a shocking unawareness of himself and what so many American people think of him. As if nobody in the White House grasps

A Washington, D.C. man is facing a large fine and possible jail time after he was arrested for having an inoperable shotgun shell in his home. The shell was a souvenir that Mark Witaschek decided to keep from a hunting trip years earlier. Witaschek, a businessman with no criminal record, is scheduled to appear at a hearing today following the raid by police in July 2012. On Fox and Friends this morning, Witaschek explained that the raid came a month after his estranged wife accused him of threatening her with a gun. Police reportedly used a battering ram on the bathroom

Every year, prior to Valentine’s Day, the Vermont Teddy Bear Co. runs ads advising guys that the most romantic thing in the world – the best gift a love-struck guy can give his girl – is a teddy bear. This year’s ad features “Big Hunka Love Bear.” Big Hunka is 4½ feet tall, and the company says he’s “stuffed with more than enough love to last a lifetime.” Hey, giving your girl a cute little teddy bear for Valentine’s Day could be a sweet thing to do. FCC investigating editorial choices and

“Everyone talks about the weather,” Mark Twain (apocryphally) observed, “but nobody does anything about it.” To some extent, the same is true about editorial bias. People have complained about bias in news coverage for decades, but only recently have the barriers to market entry been so low as to allow critics to build their own platforms to do anything about it. That frustration with editorial bias led in large part to the explosion of the blogosphere, which forced news outlets to deal substantively with the criticisms they created with their editorial biases. That is the free-market approach. Should there be

When House Speaker John Boehner told a shocked Republican caucus this morning that he would allow a vote on raising the debt ceiling with no strings attached, it was seen in some quarters as a defeat for the GOP. And, in many ways, it was. (Snip)But rather than mourning Boehner’s decision, Republicans should be celebrating. A partisan confrontation over the debt ceiling—even one in which Republicans tie support for the increase to sensible spending cuts or a popular measure aimed at helping veterans—would have turned into a repeat of last fall’s political melodrama that ended so badly for the GOP.

In a unanimous opinion, a 3-judge panel of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals has handed the IRS another defeat in that agency´s apparently never-ending quest to regulate, control, and dominate as many aspects of American political and financial life as possible. The court ruled that the IRS´s rules regarding the regulation of independent tax preparers were, for at least six reasons, outside of the IRS´s authority -- which is to say illegal. The opinion itself summarized the rules nicely: "Among other things, the new regulations require that paid tax return preparers pass an initial certification exam, pay annual fees, and complete

WASHINGTON — Richard H. BAGHDAD — A group of Sunni militants attending a suicide bombing training class at a camp north of Baghdad were killed on Monday when their commander unwittingly conducted a demonstration with a belt that was packed with explosives, army and police officials said. The militants belonged to a group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, which is fighting the Shiite-dominated army of the Iraqi government, mostly in Anbar Province. But they are also linked to bomb attacks elsewhere and other fighting that has thrown Iraq deeper into sectarian violence.

Powerful winds in the Pacific Ocean, which have driven surface heat deep underwater, could be the reason behind the current ‘pause’ in global warming. This is according to a joint Australian and U.S. study which has looked at why there has been a slowdown in the planet’s global average surface temperature over the past decade. Their research shows that trade winds in central and eastern parts of the Pacific have caused warm surface water to sink to the ocean´s depths, reducing the amount of heat in the atmosphere. Last year, scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said the pace of

From its inception, the strategy behind the Obama administration’s implementation of ObamaCare has been simple: to frontload the benefits and postpone the pain and costs of this massive government intrusion into the private sector for as long as possible. This deceitful approach enabled President Obama run for reelection in 2012 on the spurious promise of extending insurance coverage to the poor and those with pre-existing conditions without being held accountable for the problems with the law that would only become apparent in his second term. Michelle Obama´s lust for luxury has always been a bit of a problem for her husband and Democrats in general. Jetting off to five star resorts with a large entourage has too much dissonance with the rhetoric denouncing inequality currently in favor with the left. But the First Lady has now outdone herself, and because a picture is worth a thousand words, the damage may be a bit more serious than the occasional grumble over designer shoes and livin´ large. After all, millions of Americans are mired in unemployment, underemployment, and hopelessness. So in the face of all this, Michelle
